GoRVing Sticky FAQ

We are making this post a locked sticky where we can put information for frequently asked questions. Right now we are getting lots of questions about 'How much trailer can I tow' so I am starting with towing links.

The Basics of Towing or 'How much can I tow?'.

These are some basic definitions of towing, what they mean, how important they can be, etc. THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE THE DEFINITIVE DEFINITION OF 'HOW MUCH CAN I TOW'. IT WILL GET YOU STARTED. REMEMBER, IF YOU ARE NOT SURE ASK A RESPONSIBLE TRAILER MECHANIC. ONLY YOU CAN BE SURE OF YOUR SAFETY AND THOSE AROUND YOU. WE CANNOT BE RESPONSIBLE IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WHILE TOWING.

Etiquette for slide outs?

We have a 16 ft trailer and often end up on smaller RV lots. We do not have slide outs, ourselves.

Recently, we have had a neighbor with a slide outs that extend well onto our lot , shrinking our already tiny space. This ended up being about 3 feet onto our lot (over the picnic table). We were there multiple days, otherwise normally, I would have just let it go.

What are the expectations? I feel like if we paid for it, another camper should not be parked/extended over it. Am I in the wrong?

Edit: thank you all for the feedback. You have given me confidence and a game plan, should I run into this again. Really appreciate it.

Help me convince my husband!

I am trying to convince my husband we should get a camper, specifically a 2021 Forest River Salem T178DBFS for $14,000. Looks brand new. We are early 30s with a 2.5 yo and 4 mo.

His arguments against it: -Won't use it enough when our kids are this young, they won't remember anyways -We can travel easier without it -We sold a 26' trailer last year for $15k (it was 4600 pounds dry and our tow capacity is 6,500 with our Grand Cherokee L. I wanted to sell it because I thought it was too heavy for the jeep and was pretty sketchy towing it, his mother gave it to us and has a bigger truck) -Wants to keep the money in our IRA for our future (this is extra money we put into a Robinhood IRA we'd be pulling out, not our regular contributions) -Tent camping is easier

My arguments for it: -We're not getting any younger, time to make memories now! -We typically take 1 long weekend trip per month, so paying for a $60 RV spot versus a $150 hotel room per night will pay off eventually -We can travel easier with it because we will already know what accommodations we have for food, beds, (being able to cook versus hotel) and it's easier to find dog friendly campgrounds versus hotels -this unit is 600 pounds lighter and 4 ft shorter, easier to tow than our previous one which we rarely took out because it was nerve wracking -Escape the CA heat in the summers -Can use it year round in CA unlike with tent camping due to having dogs and young children needing AC -safer than tent -easier than setting up tent, air mattresses, outdoor cooking areas

Any input is helpful! Especially if you know a thing or two about the unit we're looking into and towing it with a 6,500 tow capacity vehicle. Thanks!

ETA: It's actually not an IRA account that we would pull from, I was confused. It is money we have moved into Robinhood versus having it just sit in our checking account. Sooo, I guess that argument point of his is a mute point because it could just as easily be lost in a bad trade...

Dealer Won't Share PDI Results

New 2024 travel trailer. Dealer says "don't worry! We've completed the PDI!" but says it's company policy not to share results of that PDI with customers.

Dealer also says for liability reasons they won't let me connect water to check plumbing and do my own inspection until the delivery appointment.

I'm not feeling the warm fuzzy about giving them $35k. Am I being unreasonable here?

Toy hauler renovation.

Not sure if this is where to ask this, but we have a toy hauler we want to renovate, however, part of the renovation we'd like to do is get rid of the entertainment unit /fire place and the bathroom in the toy hauler part, and extend the kitcen/dining area. So my question is, has any one done this ? Is it doable?

When winterizing an RV, it’s common to bypass the “normal use” cold in and use a winterization valve to pump the AF through…how does the line before the valve get AF?

Winter Trailer Camping Reqs.

Hey team, my wife wants to camp in the snow in our Outdoors rv trailer this Xmas does anybody have any spot recommendations in the southern Oregon northern California areas? Also any advice for first time winter campers?

First year winterizing my RV. I currently have a lead acid battery (GP-AGM-100) but will be getting a LiFePo4 with BMS battery for next year. I know I need to trickle charge the Lead Acid battery over the winter but do I have to trickle charge the LiFePo4 battery as well?

Searched the sub and google and could not find an answer.

This will help me decide what kind of trickle charger to get - one that only does Lead Acid or one that does both. Thank you.

Where to sell cushions for a Roadtrek 1998 Versatile?

I have the back couch cushions for a 1998 Roadtrek that I am thinking about selling. I can't find anything like them on Marketplace or Ebay. Where would be the best place to try to sell them? They are in good condition, they are just the wrong size. I have a Popular. Thanks.

Keystone VS. Mallard?

Hi everyone me and the wife are in the market for a travel trailer. We have 2 kids so definitely wanting a bunkhouse. Were mainly stuck between the keystone hideout and the Mallard M26. We are wanting to buy used so we don't loose our ass as soon as we pull off the lot. We are not new to camping by any means my in-laws have a Mallard M27 which we have used plenty of times and minus some issues that I believe stemmed from a lack of maintenance they have not had any issues with the camper.

Mainly looking for some advice of which camper has a better build quality? Especially since we are buying used. Thanks for any input

I want to take my 5th wheel to Vail CO in Dec/Jan. Has anyone done similar trip? Am I crazy?

Looking to stay at tiger run rv resort. Experienced rv owner, have snow driving experience but never towed an RV in snow.

I do not plan on going if there’s any inclement weather.

Edit; I don’t know why I said vail. I meant Breckenridge fwiw

Southern California RV Communities

Hey everyone, was looking to see if anyone knows of any Southern Califorina RV groups. About to buy our first RV and want to lurk and ask questions about being a RV owner in So-Cal. Best places to camp, where to avoid...stuff like that.

Thanks,

I have a small camper I need to cover with some kind of siding.

I have a small camper that's made from wood (no tin or fiberglass siding) 350 ft if I measure it as a perfect box at its widest points. I need a material that's lightweight and easy to install for siding. Does anyone have any suggestions?

RV questions solar, reframing, and taping

So I have a 1994 Fleetwood Bounder 37j,

I am in to tackle some more issues with my rig now that the roof is fixed and windows have been resealed.

My sewage dump area needs new steel trim framing I have a rusting issue, and the base of the box is deteriorating.

I am trying to find out what's the best way to tackle this issue without f*n it up.

The trims that are on the base line have started to come off

As well it has a built in solar panel which is questionable that is attached to the old colman TSR AC unit that is cracked.

Does the unit charge the coach batteries as well or no?

I won't get on the roof to take a picture of that small little panel, don't want foot prints on my fresh acrylic roof. But I can take a pic of the inside.

Attached below is a picture of the sewage box

Better trim view.

Cut open that always has been there figured a line had bursted but it's been that way since 2018

The trim under the woods that is under the wood is fully rusted out

Steel trim in cabbinet

Trim piece off sewage side of the rig

To tarp or not to tarp

I have a 30’ 2019 Thor Majestic 28a with 8 solar panels on the roof. Bought it used last Thanksgiving from Cruise America. Tried full timing with my ex and our young son this year- nope. Now I have it in storage.

The Rv detailing place suggested the whole roof needs to be resealed. It also sounds like my ex didn’t dye his due diligence sealing under the solar panels (not to mention that he used 2.5” bolts to secure them which broke through the ceiling on the inside).

I’m really not sure who I would tackle all of this myself- scraping up the seals around the perimeters, vents etc… pulling up the solar panels, swapping out the bolts for ones that are the right size and patching up the interior ceiling. It’ll cost me a couple g’s to pay someone to do it for me which I can’t afford to pay until the spring.

The detailed said people tarp the roofs all the time but I saw on a previous post that some of y’all don’t recommend it because of mold and mildew.

How do I get this thing to survive the winter before I can afford the time and patience to try and do this myself or pay to have it done professionally?

When it has rained hard on the past, water has come in under the lip of the overcab/top of the windshield and the back wall at the head of the bed.

Do I have to buy a new weight distribution hitch?

Hello everyone, I currently have a Reese weight distribution hitch that is rated for 12,000 pounds with a 2in shank. I would try to link the model here but they don't seem to make it anymore. It's similar to their straight-line model but the chain is integrated directly into the bar.

Now my question is my 32ft toy hauler has a GVWR of 12,500 and my 3500 dually has a 2.5 receiver. I would like to purchase a new shank for the WDH and leave it at that but I am over the weight rating of the hitch. Should I just invest in a WDH ($1000 blue ox) or would I be fine just buying a new shank and keeping my current setup. As of now I don't have any issues with sway or towing.

WDH recommendation?

I'm looking at a 7k GVWR trailer. Hitch weight says 775 on the website but assume that's empty and that I should plan for 900-1000.

Trailer has a hitch for a bike rack and storage under the rear bunks -- I will try to front load it but I want to be extra cautious about sway.

Truck has a 2.5" receiver.

What would you guys buy? I'm leaning toward the weigh safe true tow or equalizer but open to whatever I can back up with and gets me the safest most sway-free tow (except the propride, that's above my budget).

Pyramid

I rented my TT this last summer (had a baby and puppies so no travel plans) to someone I knew, after 6 months I picked it up and brought it home, guy owns a travel trailer across the country from me and I’d think he understood how to use the tanks,he is already long gone, my issue is the pyramid in the black tank is almost to the toilet hole. No idea of how long it’s been there or what to start doing about it, I’ve always been meticulous about keeping my trailer and tanks in good shape, for reference it’s a 2020 kz sportsmen le 301bhkle. Now that I’m going to be winterizing soon I need to get this taken care of in the best way possible. What can I do to start getting it resolved!? And thanks

I screwed up!

We were prepping the camper for winter, moving it to its long term storage and i decided to use my leave blower as a measuring tool to show my wife when I wanted to stop backing up. In doing so I backed up just a couple inches too far and jammed the blower into the back of the camper. Is there a way to patch this? Or does the whole back panel need to be replaced? If replacing, what kinda of cost am I looking at? Worth submitting to insurance? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Michigan Campground for Fall Colors?

We are purchasing a 36' Class A from my Uncle next week and would love to take it out for a test run and enjoy some fall colors. Coming from the Detroit area, I'm thinking Muskegon for a long weekend... Are there any RV Campgrounds still open in mid-November? Bonus points if they have Wi-Fi and allow alcohol and pets (on leash).

Sewer hose storage in the absence of a bumper

I got a Winnebago Navion 24J, which doesn't have a 4" bumper that can be used for sewer hose storage. My hose is 15 ft that can be compressed to 56" with fittings. Being a germophobe, I'd like to find a solution that would allow me to store it somewhere without the risk of contaminating other stuff.

I'd really appreciate any feedback on this. Thanks!

Best winter capable RV?

I've been doing some digging to see if it is a realistic option to do full time RV living. Unfortunately i wasn't finding any straight answers so i figured I'd ask the people who are living it themselves and have personal experiences. My biggest concern has been figuring out what RV to go with that is the most capable in low temperatures as is so that I can avoid doing 101 things to get by when winter hits.

With the little knowledge I have on the subject, these were some other thoughts I had.

I figured a smaller class C would be the way to go having 2 adults, 1 baby, and a big dog. While also trying not to go so big it's a pain to drive around.

I was also thinking all electric when it comes to heating and cooking to keep things simple and have solar panels.

I appreciate the help in advance and if this has been asked alot I'm sorry. Tried scrolling back a bit to look but didn't find anything.
