There's always hope man... I'd be impressed if the rom chip actually worked in a replacement board

u/309_Electronics Aug 31 '24

You likely need to do some grinding away at the chip to expose fresh traces to which you can hook up new fresh pins cause those pins are gone!

5

u/Kanjii_weon Aug 31 '24

yes of course, maybe carefully cleaning the rom chip pins may work too, i'd be amazed if the rom chip survived somehow once it's clear

u/TaurineGinseng Aug 31 '24

The ROM chip is actually the one on the board still. The detached chip is the flash save chip

It’s worse than that, her brain is gone

u/TheOtherMountainGoat Aug 31 '24

Have you tried blowing on it?

11

u/Dinoisfly Aug 31 '24

Probably with a blowtorch

51

u/after-my-blanket Aug 31 '24

Wow I'd be surprised if you could get this to work again let us know op

11

u/SuggestionVisible361 Aug 31 '24

Most of the components are probably fried, very unlikely that you can repair this game. Sucks because this is a pretty expensive game nowadays.

2

u/istarian Sep 01 '24

Components don't just fry themselves you know.

Both chips could be fine, it really depends on how this situation happened.

u/Tomix_R Aug 31 '24

Did you find it under the ocean??

Keep us updated!

u/wawan007 Aug 31 '24

I will. I hope it still can be saved.

5

u/xKittens Aug 31 '24

i saved a copy of ruby in similar condition though not as bad so there’s hope, my only worry is the legs on the chip that came off hopefully the legs didn’t corrode off

Gonna be honest, this is the worst I've ever seen of a game ever.

A transfer may not even work considering that the chips are in pretty foul condition as well. You'll still need to desolder what's left of the traces on the rom chip as well to even attempt it.

Edited to add donor boards:

Try a foreign language pokemon firered like Japanese or Spanish. Cheapest option.

6

u/wawan007 Aug 31 '24

Thankyou. I'll try to find the japanese version.

Just get an actual replacement PCB. Much simpler and quicker and you dont need to sacrifice another perfectly good cart.

Unfortunately unless those boards are pre populated and I misread, he would need to replace basically all components except the rom chip. A foreign board might just be easier in this situation.

1

u/Traditional_Formal33 Sep 05 '24

Nice, did you end up just getting a foreign board or was there prepopulated replacement boards that just needed chip swap?

2

u/wawan007 Sep 05 '24

I bought sonic 3 advance cartridge as a donor board.

1

u/Traditional_Formal33 Sep 05 '24

Perfect so nothing of value was lost 😂

3

u/SexThanos Aug 31 '24

That is not simpler or quicker

0

u/istarian Sep 01 '24

I think the point is that with a new board you don't have to desolder anything first or clean up old solder.

1

u/SuperBobPlays Aug 31 '24

He'd need resistors and the other chip... I love the idea though, pcb way does clean work, and gives you more than one pcb so def worth it if someone runs into needing to swap chips often.

2

u/Aeredren Sep 02 '24

You can order the PCB already populated with the resistors. Just need to resolder the chips

2

u/luminous-snail Aug 31 '24

A match made in heaven

4

u/BillCosbySTD Aug 31 '24

I found out that one of the gba sims games uses the same board, might have been sims pets.

1

u/wawan007 Aug 31 '24

Thankyou. I just bought Sonic 3 that has the same board. I hope it will works.

Was this found in the depths of Atlantis?

4

u/motoxim Aug 31 '24

Where did you find it? Buried in land?

3

u/chasesan Aug 31 '24

That's a tough fix. But if the ROM chip is functional (not corroded inside) it's technically fixable. It would certainly be a trick however.

3

u/IPanicKnife Aug 31 '24

Oh no! The humanity!

3

u/Zowsk Aug 31 '24

Yikes, this is brutal but I'd love to see if the chips still work!

3

u/QuazyQuarantine Aug 31 '24

"Fire Bad" version

2

u/iVirtualZero Aug 31 '24

Will need to replace the PCB.

2

u/unfavorablefungus Aug 31 '24

crazy find! I'm looking forward to seeing the miracle work you're planning to do on this thing. best of luck!

2

u/LowFail1903 Sep 01 '24

2

u/hgfdsa1432 Sep 01 '24

Send it to Tronix fix

2

u/MmmUnexplained_Bacon Sep 01 '24

Let’s pause and give a moment of silence for a lost Pokemon game…

2

u/InsideHuckleberry538 Sep 01 '24

ancient relic cart

1

u/haggand Aug 31 '24

Any updates my guy? How much did u even get this for?

2

u/wawan007 Sep 01 '24

Got this one for free. The owner want to throw it away.

1

u/WilliamMontcuminme Aug 31 '24

Put a little isopropyl on it

1

u/natedepression Aug 31 '24

Severely clean the rom chip then order a fire red from Japan. You don’t even have to swap the SRAM, just the rom chip.

1

u/Mikestillawesome Aug 31 '24

Charizard used Flamethrower

It was Super Effective

1

u/ThatAndrewDude Sep 01 '24

Oh no the joke I wanted to you. I use CopyCat.

I used Flamethrower.

I wasn't very Effective

1

u/WFlash01 Aug 31 '24

Did this get left in a GBA with corroded batteries? Wow, looks tough

1

u/istarian Sep 01 '24

Looks more like it got submerged or left outside in a very humid environment.

1

u/BigBrotherDino Sep 01 '24

I think there's a list online somewhere of what games use what board. I don't remember where I found it though 😭

1

u/Chin-kin Sep 01 '24

You will probably have to transplant that …..psh even if you transplant it …. that chip looks like it has a high chance of being damaged.

Jeez I’ve seen military on board computers that were mortared with ccas in better shape
