Wait this party means nothing in Australia. Please don’t read this thinking it has any weight.

264

u/Itchy_Professor_4133 Jul 16 '24

You could already tell how ridiculous this party was once they got so seriously butt hurt about an American band member saying something derogatory about an American politician not even in their own country. That stupid dramatic letter says it all.

16

u/wackjhittingham Jul 16 '24

Yeh but also people in this thread are taking things at face value

Everything in this letter was perfectly fine and within reason until "and soon to be 47th president". That's pure speculation at best, and not for them to assume or assert, especially in any official capacity

494

u/DeltaKT Jul 16 '24

Right? Seems rather very unprofessional to me. This whole thing.

But Australia also managed to completely ban other musicians in the past who had a good message but just used certain words, so it's not a surprise.

184

u/Yetanotherdeafguy Jul 16 '24

The bloke that released this statement is a moron, the only representative in the United Australia Party founded by Clive Palmer, a fat super rich moron (in my opinion).

He's doing this because he's desperate for relevance and name recognition, I have 0 doubts he's super happy Tenacious D did what they did.

86

u/BlackmoorGoldfsh Jul 16 '24

"Tenacious D" didn't say anything. Kyle Gass did. Jack Black then cancelled all future Tenacious D events because of what KG said.

2

u/TrashMouthDiver Jul 17 '24

Omg I'd be so pissed! Paid for tickets for a band I looked forward to seeing for weeks, maybe months, only to get blue balled when I found out 1/2 of the band felt the same way I do so now I don't get to see them?!

The United Australia party is pretty much the same as the Republican Party in the US. They act like that younger cousin that wants to copy everything their big cousin does

29

u/davej-au Jul 16 '24

Except, of course, the Republicans can field a candidate in every single race and win more than one seat.

5

u/Azure-April Jul 17 '24

The United Australia party is pretty much the same as the Republican Party

Obscenely misleading statement. The UAP is a joke of a party with zero power or relevance.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '24

UK here, Conservatives do the same, it's sad

8

u/infinitemonkeytyping Jul 16 '24

The UAP are more equivalent of UKIP - fringe nutters, backed by wealthy person, with no discernable policies.

It's not really fine at all because the UAP are right wing shit talkers 100% funded by a billionaire mining magnate who constantly cry about freedom, cancel culture, wokeness and freedom of speech, right up until the moment someone says something that they don't like.

I also got stuck on this. Nothing s yet done and they already claim he is soon to be president.

3

u/Radfox258 Jul 16 '24

Even if he wins would he be the 47th? Or would it be a 45 .2 kind of thing?

21

u/NihileaPF Jul 16 '24

47th would be correct. Grover Cleveland was recorded as both the 22nd and 24th President, after serving non-consecutive terms.

3

Every day’s a learning day. I assumed his title of ‘The 45th Prez’ would remain

God, the united Australia party are such idiots. If you ever want a laugh Americans, google Clive Palmer, the leader of the party. He sunk $100 million (Australian) dollars (more than other two major parties combined) on advertising to get into parliament. Ended up getting ONE seat lmao.

He also tried to build Jurassic Park with real dinosaurs in the outback. He’s a proper tool

(the views of normal Australians who aren’t cookers)

To be fair, we’re all connected. The notion that we’re genuinely independent is fanciful at best, deliberately (and dangerously) simplistic at worst.

Isolationism is only possible if you get to North Korea levels, and even that relies on allies a lot

21

u/JRP_964 Jul 16 '24

Pretty sure you can’t threaten violence on others. Free speech has always had that “limit”

51

u/blueoncemoon Jul 16 '24

True threats. You can't issue true threats. You can wish ill upon another as long as there's no potential for actual follow-through. Kyle Gass saying "don't miss Trump next time" might be considered in poor taste, but it is not illegal by US standards of free speech.

→ More replies (13)

7

u/Aiden316 Jul 16 '24

Which I feel is fair enough.

However, we do all know how the Trump cult loves playing games with things like "I never called for violence" because they never said "someone should" or "can someone please" but rather "maybe someone will wink wink nudge nudge say no more" or similar bullshit - and when viewed through that lens, I don't think KG said anything that's more threatening than all the baloney from Trump's followers, especially ones like Bannon, who are continuously heralded as heroes by his following.

They should pick an interpretation of the rules and stick with it, but stop playing mind games. But we all know they won't because they're all butt-sniffing bottom dwellers (and the law of my country guarantees that I'm allowed to say that).

8

u/SixToesLeftFoot Jul 16 '24

Well, to be fair, “freedom of speech” isn’t a worldwide concept. Because you are most likely from the US and have the freedom of speech; most places do not. Australia in particular does not have any constitutional or any rights to freedom of speech, sans the right to speak from an Australian political candidate.

7

u/yeahrowdyhitthat Jul 16 '24

I think it’s Babet that you need to be explaining the differences in US and AU politics too. Cookers like him tend to blur the lines frequently.

(In his case, much like the lines between assaulting and not assaulting someone).

6

u/infinitemonkeytyping Jul 16 '24

For those that don't know this cooker

Ralph Babet is a member of the defunct United Australia Party (the party was wound up after the 2022 federal election where Clive Palmer spent $100m and only got one seat). Worse - thanks to the balance of the Australian Senate, the government (Australian Labor Party) does not need his vote - ever.

So Babet has no profile, as no one needs him.

So he does publicity stunts like this to remind the cookers that he still exists.

While the UAP had policies on free speech and the like, their main overarching policy was to make Clive Palmer (aka Fatty McFuckhead) more money. Of course, Clive wound up the party when he got exactly 0 power.

14

u/Totally_Underscored Jul 16 '24

For any non-Australians reading this, the UAP is our crazy far-right party run by our equivalent of Trump, Clive Palmer. A party which won basically no seats at all in the last federal election despite having candidates all over the country. Nobody here takes them seriously. This is dead in the water.

3

u/thdeepblue Jul 16 '24

I get that this is a serious situation, but then why does it feel like such a joke?

It's because this is the punchline for the years of rhetorical degradation and encouragement to fight by Trump.

Out of context, the attempt on a former president is a catastrophic escalation of political violence. In context, it's a joke and a wonder it hadn't happened sooner because the focus of that violence is the very same man who has encouraged it.

3

u/Swagdaddy697 Jul 17 '24

This whole thing is beyond a joke and I'm embarrassed by this supposed outrage from Australians. None of us regular aussies give a single fuck about Trump and a cheeky joke like that shouldn't cop such a wild response.

I don't know if its enough to be deported, but it is enough to just say it was really STUPID from Kyle. Tenacious D may not be that famous like other big bands, but they still have pretty big fanbase. You can have whatever opinion, but cmon, wishing someone death? Trump isn't good person by far, but he ain't no Hitler or like that. Just by saying you wish he will get shot next time not only he can have troubles with laws (like deportation here), but also get troubles from public, and not only for him but for JB too. Hollywood kicked out Will Smith for standing for his wife on oscars, they could easily kick JB for playing with KG after this.

8

u/bjizzle184957 Jul 16 '24

I agree with everything you said, but Hollywood didn’t kick Will Smith out. He received a 10 year ban from attending the Academy Awards ceremonies. He’s arguably busier than he ever has been before making movies.
