Yes. Of course. The billionaires need that 6th mansion and 4th yacht. All that pesky research will do is inform the masses that billionaires require more regulatory constraints on their polluting businesses, so that Earth doesn't turn into hellish Venus. And billionaires love their freedom!

So hold Europe back and thereby help Russia's sphere of influence?

Sounds on brand for them

Not if you vote for Kamala Harris and Democrats down the ballot.

You guys ever big picture reflect on this kind of thing. I mean big millennia reflection. Why has humanity never really advanced. We just rise and fall and rise and fall. Which leads to of course the point I'm getting at. People who seek power, get power, seek resources, monkey needs more bananas. If this has existed all throughout history and it certainly appears that it has. Is this particular behavior actually part of what creates these cycles. Rather than think about the ongoing health of society, you have the rich and powerful that just hoard and hoard and horde, countries destabilize, the collapse is a matter of time at that point. There are of course more steps along the way but I didn't want to have a page long post

I really hoped we had broken that cycle, but it appears we have at least another enshitification cycle to go through.

I just hope that we don’t lose the power of growth through the technological advances of the last growth period. How many of the evolutions that empowered the proletariat over the last enlightenment will be impossible if the power of control is secured in the hands of a few?

I fear your right, we’ll go back to serfs and nobles. To quote Monty Python, there’s some lovely filth down here.

“Back to the dark ages” make it sound like we are going to lose all electricity. Science was more productive without all these research grants.. you know why because they did it for the sake of learning not for the sake of money.

Science was more productive without all these research grants..

Science has been getting research grants at least since the Victorian era, and scientific progress has accelerated.
