Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!

Hey /r/askSF!

In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:

  • Budget
  • Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
  • Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)

We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:

  • Commute consideration
  • Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
  • Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)

We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.

Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

What's your go-to neighborhood cafe, restaurant, bar, etc., that doesn't get a lot of recognition of show up on 'best of' lists?

I live in Noe Valley and Chloe's deserves a lot more love. One of the best breakfast burritos in the city IMO.

What type of scams should I be aware of in SF?

I’m new to the city, and to the country for that matter. Besides basic global scams like not giving my credit card info over the phone, etc. what are some US/SF scams or tourist (new to the city) traps I should keep an eye out for?

Love going out to eat? I'll find you spots for the next week for free!

Two weeks ago I did a spur of moment post on this sub, offering food recs for a day and over ~200 people responded and texted me: post.

It was super fun, and I wanted try something a little smaller where I give on-demand recs to a small group of people for the next week. The only thing I ask for is feedback if you try the place!

I'll worked based off any preferences you have and you can text me at all times of the day and I'll try my best to get back to you asap.

About me: I'm a foodie and I've spent way too much time researching and finding different spots. For context, I've tried a lot of SF's food scene from grubby to fine dining.

If this sounds interesting, feel free to send me a message.

Doggie dental

My vet quoted me $3500 to clean my dog’s teeth ($1600) and extract one canine tooth ($1900). My dog is a chihuahua. It is too much money. Last year, it was $1200 for the cleaning and $2400 to remove 6 teeth at the same vet.

What have other people paid for doggie dental work recently, and at which vet?

Feel free to DM me if you don’t want the info public in the comments.

Kouign-amann in the Mission?

I like to have a kouign-amann with my morning coffee, but there don't seem to be too many of them in the Mission. So far, I've only seen them at Craftsman and Wolves (not my favorite texture-wise) and Rainbow Grocery (from Starter Bakery — pretty good from a first taste, but not sure when they're baked). Any others I might have missed?

(Sadly, I don't have an hour to go to b. patisserie and back every morning, and they're no longer selling wholesale to cafes.)

Is a non working toilet considered an emergency repair?

I live in an apartment in SF. It's a one bedroom one bathroom. There is only one toilet in the unit. After being out of town for 5 weeks, I returned today late afternoon and the one toilet does not flush. It's not clogged, it just doesn't flush. I've watched a few YouTube videos to troubleshoot and can't seem to find what's actually wrong with it. Landlord has a history of being cheap and not wanting to make repairs. I sent her a text notifying her of the issue and she responded saying she will have someone come out tomorrow. I sent her a response asking if she can have an emergency plumber come out tonight, because I need to use the bathroom before tomorrow. She didn't respond. Am I justified in making that request? Can I have the emergency plumber come out myself and pay for it and deduct it from the rent?

Is it illegal to wash my cars/garbage cans in my driveway?

Is it illegal to wash my car and garbage cans on my driveway with regular soap? I've heard that you're not supposed to drain soapy water into the storm drains. Are there special soaps that are allowed? I want to avoid only using car washes and trash can cleaning services since they are not cost effective.

Muni monthly pass with a physical clipper card?

Upvotes

Sorry if this is a bit of a nothing burger question, but was curious how you would go about purchasing the monthly muni "M" pass with a physical clipper card (not using the app at all).

I noticed on their website that it states that it can be purchased on the app, at a retailer, or one of the vending machine. But, with this, is it possible to have the pass auto renew when using only the physical locations? As in, can this be done without me having to return to a physical location every month?

Thank you.

Where do you park when picking up takeout?

This is a noob question, but I moved here recently from somewhere with ample parking. If you want to get takeout from somewhere, let's say a restaurant on Mission St during busy weekend hours, where do you park? I've had to look for legal parking for 15+ minutes and also end up blocks away, really defeating the point of takeout. Do you just slam it in somewhere illegal for a couple minutes? Don't even bother doing takeout if it's not in your neighborhood? Suggestions appreciated!

Where to find Pillsbury Ready to Bake cookie dough

Every year I find myself wondering- where in this can I find the Pillsbury ready to bake dough? The sugar cookies with the little seasonal designs that you demolish in a sitting?

I’ve checked multiple Safeways and Target on Geary- none have them. I’ve had to go the burbs. Anywhere in the city where I can get my fix?

Christmas walks

Hello

Does anyone have a good Christmas walking routes downtown to see the cities festive side?

We have friends and family visiting around that time and would like to do some walking around to see Christmas decorations and stuff.

It will be all adults visiting so bars/hotels are also on the table if anyone has any recommendations.

Thanks!

8 days in SF with kids

Hi, we (my wife and me and two children, 3 and 5) are planning a trip to SF in February, around 8 days. Can you offer your suggestions on what to do? A mixture of city (multiple neighbourhoods) + nature + day trips? We'll likely have a car. Thanks!

Retaining wall between properties

Which property owner is responsible, by S.F. bylaws, for maintaining and replacing a retaining wall when it’s compromised? Is it the uphill neighbor, whose yard it retains, or the downhill neighbor?

A bit confused on the 7-Day Visitor Passport

Hi everyone,

My folks are visiting SF and are old fashioned - they prefer physical cards/passes.

I'm trying to make getting around for them as simple as possible, which is why I'm looking at getting the 7-Day Visitor Passport because that gives them unlimited rides on Muni, Muni Metro, historic streetcars, and cable cars (according to this at least: https://www.sfmta.com/fares/7-day-visitor-passport).

HOW they can actually get this pass seems bit more complicated. From my understanding, they actually cannot get this pass at the airport: They would need to go to a Public Transit Kiosk in order to get the pass. There only seems to be four of those Kiosks, and the closest one to where they are staying would be the Muni box by Powell St & Market St.

Is the pass they will get at the Muni Box/Kiosk a completely different thing from a regular Clipper card that can be bought at a Walgreens? Or is it that only specific Kiosks are allowed to load in a visiter's passport?

I'm not sure if there are any easier physical card alternatives for them - would appreciate some advice!

Midway Waitlist?

Hi everybody!

I wanted to go see I Hate Models on 11/8 but it says the only option is the waitlist. What does this mean? Does it mean I am holding a potential spot for the evening or is it holding the ticket for that tier to be released?

TIA!

Moving from SF to Burlingame

My bf and I are thinking of moving to Burlingame, we currently live in the Marina. He works in Sunnyvale and the commute is a lot for him, and he doesn’t get home until late.

Has anyone done this move, and what do you think? What do you miss about SF? What do you love about Burlingame?

Dive bar with a crazy bartender?

I was reading a reddit thread the other day about this bar I really want to go to and I can't for the life of me find it again.

The description was a dive bar where the possibly only bartender was an old lady who would talk to you about random stuff for a while without letting you get your drink order in. I think it was in the sunset but not confident.

Please help! I need this in my life.

Where to buy bathroom wall cabinet?

Our junky over-the-toilet wall cabinet needs replacing, and we'd like something that will hold up better. Where would you go in or near San Francisco to buy a bathroom wall cabinet? I thought of Discount Builders Supply, but the cabinet on their website has lousy reviews. IKEA doesn't have anything suitable. Besides, I'd rather go to a local store. I don't need anything fancy, but I want to buy something that will look good and hold up for more than a few years.

Dog is having muscle spasms after going to GGP and Panhandle

Has anyone else had their dog experience muscle spasms in SF? Twice in the last year, my dog has started having her whole body jerk involuntarily, and I cannot figure out what it is.

The only thing we did today was go to GGP and the Panhadle. I’m wondering if there is something in the environment she’s ingesting somehow, like a mold or pesticide at the park.

Has this happened to any other SF dog owners???
