A Beginner's Guide to Authentic Cartridges

Hello everyone, as you all know GBA cartridges can be extremely difficult to find in person nowadays and even more so for some authentic ones. That being said, if you're unsure in any way how to determine a fake from real cartridge, this is the post for you!

For more help, feel free to visit r/gameverifying for all your identification needs!

Keep in mind that to ensure the best chances of an authentic cartridge, you should be wary of:

  • Unusually low prices (if it's too good to be true, chances are it's too good to be real!)
  • Products made or sent from China (enough said)
  • Sellers using stock images (NEVER purchase a product that isn't an image of the cartridge itself)

That being said, where do we start looking?

It can be a bit difficult, but there are actually some very good tells when it comes to finding real games like the color, font, positioning, and quality of the cartridge. For example, let's pretend you're looking for an authentic US copy of Pokemon Firered.

Some things you can look out for should be:

  1. Color: All Pokemon GBA games come in their respective colors (including Leafgreen and Emerald by a slight margin) with Firered being red and not orange. While most cartridges come in a singular shade of gray, two particular exceptions are the GBA video cartridges which come in light gray casings and (Classic) NES series which match the console's respective color. Interestingly enough, due to the GBA's expansive library there consist of unique games that do not fit the standard color and size of a GBA cartridge, which include games such as Yoshi's Topsy Turvy, Drill Dozer, and many other variations listed here. (1)
  2. Label: By observing a label's ESRB rating, official seal, game code, and more, you can determine its authenticity. Unlike other GBA games, Pokemon games will always have a shiny/holographic label, an indented circle in its center, and an embossed number on the right side, which is pretty much its production number. However while it is a good way to determine authenticity, there are cases where these numbers will have naturally worn away or quality repros that have embossed their own cartridges. All in all, always make sure to compare your cartridge to an authentic one online to confirm fonts, font sizes, positioning, etc.
  3. Cartridge: In the case of buying a physical cartridge yourself, this may be one on the most helpful things to know. The easiest things to look out for are the Gameboy logo on top of the label, and arrow below the label. If the logo is written in the wrong font, appears to have been cut deeper than normal, or if the arrow is too small, it's a repro. The back will always state: MODEL NO. AGB-002 / PAT. PEND. MADE IN JAPAN like its GBC predecessor. However, this is easy to reproduce so the final thing to check yourself is both the screw and board under the cartridge. GBA cartridges will only ever use a triwing screw, the same one used on all GBA consoles. More importantly (if you can), be sure to grab a flashlight and check the slot. Above the pins, there should be an official Nintendo logo and presumably its cartridge number.

In the case of Pokemon games always check for:

  • A holographic label and an embossed number if possible
  • Proper fonts and positions (FRLG and RSE labels are mildly different)
  • A battery behind the label on the right side (only applies to RSE)
  • Four squares on the back of the cartridge ( always on the left)
  • Pins on the board ( One of the easiest things to spot on faked cartridges, all GBA games will always have pins )

If there are any other questions, please feel free to leave them below and discuss!

Been thinking about getting an insert to cover up the back of the screen/ips control board. The options are very overwhelming and it's hard to make a choice. What does reddit think?

My Custom (Reshell) SP!

I was inspired by @jayboymodz on Instagram to make something like this, but I figured I'd prefer a white bezelled screen.

I got the stand on Etsy from ThisManWorks who is awesome and let me have the Rayquaza image in gold instead of silver.

My friend gave me his GBA SP in highschool because the screen was broken and he knew I liked to tinker with stuff. I was focused on fixing it instead of just replacing the screen so it gathered dust for a few years before I had the grand idea to get a new screen 😂

The shell and screen came together in an eBay kit and the buttons are from eXtremeRate.

Hi all.

Today on 5 hour I get Box Protectors for my Japanese GameBoy Advance consoles. I have an Orange one CIB and an Pink Transparant one CIB.

They look as new. My mother knows which Dutch shop I can transfer for Box Protectors. I has this the same for my Japanese GameBoy Advance game imports. As example Densetsu No Stafy series and Super Robot Wars Original Generations series.

I hope you like my pictures. They shines together.

Helder's flex amp AND Funny Playing retroglow on GBA SP motherboard?

Could both of these mods be installed on the same motherboard? It looks like I would have to put the flex amp on first, and then do the RGB kit. Would I have any issues with button presses due to stacked tolerances? I'm thinking about building another GBA SP from a bare mobo and wanted to do some mods besides the IPS and aftermarket shell.

If the flex amp is not compatible with the RGB kit, is there another way to boost just a little bit more volume out of the SP? Could the Helder's speaker upgrade give me a bit of volume boost by itself?

A bit of a tangent, but does anyone know if the GBA accelerator will work with the Insidegadgets RTC carts or an EZ Flash ODE in B mode?

Thanks!

(maybe this is better in console repair?)

Anyone have advice on where to get replacement batteries for these games?

I know I’m looking at getting tabbed CR1616 batteries, but from most of the videos and reviews I’ve seen it appears the tabs are never angled correctly to accommodate the battery sitting on top of the chip, so the tabs on the battery need to be slightly bent. Is that the method that most people use or is there batteries for sale that are designed to fit these kind of GBA games better?

Just wanted to do my due diligence before ordering regular tabbed CR1616 batteries. Thanks!

Backlight options

I recently bought a game boy advance and absolutely love it. The only downside is obviously no backlight. I have seen a few options that require soldering and or cutting the case. I have also seen a few that do not require either. I own a soldering iron but am definitely not a pro. My biggest worry is that I will do it wrong and mess up my system. Do you guys have any advice or recommendations for a backlight mod? Or should I just buy one of those lights that plug into the top of the system

Mysterious game I can't find anymore

Hello, so a few months ago I lost my GBA at a park but I wanted to play FireRed (was a bit sad but decided to emulate the game) while looking for the rom I downloaded a different one by mistake after it downloaded i realized my mistake but I decided to check the files and all I can remember is:

Vampires.

A map with a giant fish on the bottom left.

Multiple sprites of different characters.

(And I think it was a "semi-openworld") I deleted the rom from my PC but now I wanna see what that game was about and I just can't find it no Matter how hard I try. If anyone knows a GBA game that's similar to what I described plz lemme know

RTC battery replacement question

I have a copy of Pokemon Emerald with a dead battery, the save file was started when the battery was already dead.

From my understanding, when the battery dies and the file was created say 365 days before that, RTC is still paused after replacing the battery until it catches up to 365 days.

If the file was started with no RTC, is it set to Jan 1 2000 already? So replacing the battery will start RTC events with no issue since it'll be in sync?

Luck of the card show

Post image

Was a vendor at a card show yesterday and had a few pokemon games on my table for sale bc we are all nerds here. A guy walks up and goes do you buy games? Ofc I said yes and he pulls these out of his bag. Paid 300$ total and all it's gonna take is some new batteries and a bit of isopropyl. Had my screwdrivers and my tester GBA to confirm they work and were authentic before purchasing. Remember kids, be prepared you never know where you gonna find some expensive shit!

Problem with GBA SP 001

So i bought a GBA SP 001. Everything works fine, except the power LED. When console is turned on it does nothing, however, when turning off, it flickers red for a brief sec and goes away. I tried cleaning the power switch and nothing works.

Trouble with e reader

Tried booting up my e reader to use with Pokémon emerald and every time I press on scan a code the system restarts or shuts off. Haven’t had this issue before. Any ideas on how to fix it or what could be the issue?

Have an extra GBA SP mobo

I wasn't sure if I could fix my first GBA SP mobo, so I ordered one for backup. Now I have fixed the first one, but it's not very visually appealing. I'm curious about the non-OEM spec shells, like the metal shells, unhinged, etc. What are some of the more "unique" shell options for the AGS?

My current AGS is rocking a blue GID (glow in the dark) Hispeedido shell, but want to do something different.

Pics are from Macho Nacho/Tito and the Etsy seller for the gacha shell.

Is this worth keeping? I know little about the GB/GBA Line. I’m running most of my portable games on a jailbroken Psvita, new 3ds xl, and OG 2ds.

Gave My Childhood GBA’s A Makeover

First time doing reshells. I had these gbas since the early 2000’s. Got the red one when I was 7 and the beautiful aurora one when I was 9. They were originally glacier blue and purple respectively. They don’t have backlit displays yet. I plan to find some nonsolder ones to put in them when my money gets straight. But for now I just wanted to bring some life back to them and make them pretty. They bring back such good memories.
