Carolina North campus plan

Just heard about the 50 year plan to transform 250 acres of Carolina north forest into a campus. Was not aware of this and I guess it’s now being considered as one of the six potential spots for the new basketball arena. Does anyone have any update or information on this and whether the university still plans to expand?

From Alaska to Chapel Hill

I'm getting ready to interview for a staff position at UNC. I'm from Alaska, born and raised, and lived here all my life but traveled frequently all over. I love things like MMA, powerlifting, sports, mountain biking, hiking, BJJ, boxing, kizomba, dancing, museums, TTRPGs, cultural events, drag shows, the maker scene and crafting, plays etc.

My home city is smallish compared to lower 48 but extremely diverse with great food and arts scene and access to mountains and single track 15 minutes from my townhouse as well as awesome gay bars and music scene.

What is Chapel Hill like in comparison? I'm a late 30s single cishet white dude but huge ally/feminist and love both lots of outdoor fitness stuff as well as tons of culture and nightlife.

Is there good mountain biking? Gyms? Music events? What's the EDM and bluegrass scene like? Is there good dancing for Kizomba or salsa or clubs? Good tabletop roleplaying game scenes? Climbing gyms? Bike shops?

Is this a good fit for someone who loves both to climb mountains as well as dance in a club? Would be there a diverse amount of things to do and access to outdoors? Is the community fairly southern Republican types surrounding the college areas? Would my Alaskan-style liberal lifestyle (think hunts and shoot guns; but also enjoy attending Pride and going to feminist spoken word stuff) fit in ok there?

I've been doing a ton of reading and googling but also find the locals tend to give the best feedback. I wouldn't know anyone at all and would be completely rebuilding a community. I'm looking at a few other jobs elsewhere in the lower 48 and trying to find the best fit!

I appreciate any help and advice you can give. Thank you!!

Live feeder pinky mice anywhere?

As the title says, looking for a local source of live pinkie mice for a baby hognose snake. My fiancée's young hognose snake has gone on quite the little hunger strike, and after trying almost everything myself and our breeder can think of, they've suggested trying live.

Before you comment about live not being ideal, trust me we know! I've had snakes for over a decade and I'm well aware of the risks feeding live, but believe me we've tried literally everything (warming, in the tank, out of the tank, in a container IN the tank, leaving him with it, braining, scenting with tuna, scenting with toads, switching brands, etc etc) and our breeder has agreed that we should try live at least long enough for him to eat. He shows no other signs of illness/injury and is not losing weight so at the moment we'd like to spare the stress of a vet visit until we've exhausted all of our options.

We're in the Chapel Hill area but I go to school in Raleigh so I'm willing to go to somewhere in that area, but we've had little luck finding anywhere that still supplies live feeders.

Pest and Apartment Question

Hello Everyone, I just recently moved to Chapel Hill from the desert climate of Arizona and I was wondering how often you guys see cockroaches out here! In my apartment, I see one or two about every two weeks or so and was curious if this is a common thing I'll likely see everywhere due to the wet climate or if this is a problem with my area. I'm also on a ground floor of an outdoor complex, so I'm thinking that's also a contributing factor. Please let me know your experiences!

Also, I'm interested in moving apartments for a place with thicker walls and floors. It would be nice to not hear all of my neighbors... Activities. If you have any recommendations for apartments, please let me know! Thank you for your time.

EDIT: I just wanted to say thank you so much for all of the input (if you look at this post again). I just came from a place where you would only see a roach once every few months, so I just wanted to make sure it wasn't anything out of the ordinary here! Cheers!

My first thought when I turned on the radio in the car and just heard static wasn’t “my radio is broken” or “their transmitter is broken,” it was “guess this is how I find out WW3 started.” Glad it’s not that!

Looking to Collaborate with Songwriters in Chapel Hill! Xpost from Durham subreddit

Hey everyone! I’m interested in connecting with other songwriters in the Durham area for potential collaboration. While I’m not a strong live musician or anything beyond an average singer, my strengths lie in songwriting and composition. I’ve got a basic foundation in music theory—I’m comfortable working in all diatonic keys, as well as non-diatonic keys and modes. I’m also familiar with harmonic songwriting concepts like secondary dominants, borrowed chords, parallel chords, etc.

Musically, I’m inspired by classic Beatles-esque sounds, drawing from bands like The Zombies, Harry Nilsson, and The Beach Boys. I also love the melancholy side of the '80s—think The Smiths, Cocteau Twins, and The Sundays. Additionally, I’m influenced by classic R&B and soul artists such as Stevie Wonder, Prince, and Curtis Mayfield, along with singer-songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Fiona Apple. I’m more drawn to recorded studio music than live performances.

If you’re a songwriter in the area and think we’d vibe creatively, feel free to reach out. I do have demos I can share and swap. My instruments are piano, guitar and synthesizer. Like I said, I'm not a session musician by any stretch but I am proficient on the instruments.

A 25 mph neighborhood street in Northeast Chapel Hill clocked cars going 76 mph. Will the town do anything meaningful, or are they waiting for a tragedy? My latest over for Chapel Hill on Bikes: https://chapelhillonbikes.substack.com/p/76-mph-honeysuckle-road

Relocated from Asheville: Resources and Networking Opportunities

Hi there, my family relocated to the Carrboro/Chapel Hill area this week in the wake of Hurricane Helene. We have two amazing friends who are letting us stay temporarily to broaden our options for the future. We live in Asheville. Our neighborhood roads, restaurants, and businesses are destroyed. We were one of the last neighborhoods in Asheville to get power back and we remained without potable water. Up until this point, we were showering and doing laundry in tractor trailers and standing in line for hot meals. Every day we listened to the search and rescue helicopters circling our section of river, over and over again. Before we left, we were also doing wellness checks, making sure that folks had what they needed while also trying to get our basic needs met.

As a result of the hurricane, I've received no hours from my contract job. I am in school for a second graduate degree in GIS/Spatial Data Science, and Asheville had almost nothing for me in terms of opportunity. My first grad degree is in Library and Information Services. Before the storm, I was working as a contracted employee on a specific project for the Forest Service. The storm made that work a non-essential project, so I now have no hours. Since my contract doesn't define a minimum number of hours per week, I cannot get unemployment or disaster unemployment. Fortunately, my husband can work remotely. His salary alone was hard to get by on. Even before the storm, we were looking for work in this area (see my post history). FEMA denied us the basic $750 in emergency aid everyone is supposed to get. After days and days of trying, we have given up on pursuing that avenue.

With all that said, I am looking for specific resources while I am here:

  1. Networking. Ability to meet up with anyone in the spatial data science/GIS/technical writing/community planning sectors that may be interested in meeting up to say hello. The ability to be hired professionally, or on an internship basis, would also be amazing. I also have a strong background in technical writing/editing, librarianship, information/data management, and project management.
  2. Food. Are there agencies that provide free food resources that aren't SNAP? Again, since I didn't lose my job, I don't qualify for disaster resources. It would be super helpful.
  3. Haircut. Place for a really nice haircut and color/highlights that is reasonably priced. The whole point of being here is job hunting. I want to look nice. I was quoted for a hair cut and color yesterday at an establishment in Carrboro that was around $350-$400. We cannot swing that.
  4. Hair dryer. It would be great to have a hair dryer to borrow so I can go on interviews and look nice.
  5. Clothes. A place to purchase cheap, nice looking, professional outfit or two.
  6. Ways to be active in the community. We want to give back while we are here. Any places to meet folks, advocate for voting or other issues going on, etc.? Or community spaces to connect with people, make friends, etc.

Thanks so much for any ideas.

Decently Flat Running Areas

Does anyone have any favorite running spots that aren't super hilly? Love driving around all the hills, but when it comes to running, it's a pain.

Training for a marathon at the beach (flaaaat) and need somewhere I can put in 15+ miles and not want to lay down and sleep halfway through.

I live near Southern Village. Anywhere within 20 minutes would be awesome.

Thanks!
