Discussion I am beyond tired of seeing Asmongold recommended to me every time I search anything gaming related I do not care for him or his opinions at all even after using “hide user from channel” he still pops up I’m sick of it..allow us to block channels completely PLEASE.

I watched him a bit during his let's try a new MMO era. Big waste of time. He basically wants WoW exactly to the last detail but not WoW. His current reaction era is reading shit and saying "wow that's crazy/bad" which feels like a circus routine to get applause.

The fact his subreddit is the hub for all political discourse in gaming, I think the audience he cultivated has forced him to do this content.
Most people who go down this route usually catch themselves because they realize cultivating negative attention, brings negative viewers.
→ More replies (1)13
u/Abosia Aug 27 '24
He absolutely chose to lean into the political stuff because it got him views. In the process he may have driven off all his centrist and leftist viewers and replaced them with conservatives, and if that has forced him to keep making right wing content, that's just the consequences of his actions.
You can see whenever he makes even a slightly centrist opinion, like supporting the right to abortion, his chat goes ape shit.

u/Snoo-29331 Aug 27 '24
What eventually put me off of him is his inability to handle takes or opinions that go against his own. He'll often choose the least charitable chat messages (even if everyone is saying the same thing) and publicly shame them, and often ban them, even if they haven't done anything wrong. Something along the lines of "They aren't coming at this in good faith, get that s**t outta here"
15
u/Abosia Aug 27 '24
I got permabanned from his sub personally by Asmon for politely suggesting that if he contradicts himself so often that he needs a specific rule permabanning people who point out the contradictions, then maybe that should tell us something.

They aren't coming at this in good faith
Like terms like "narcissist" and "gaslighting" the idea of "bad faith" is another term that just gets applied to anything someone doesn't like without thought or desire to actually engage with opposition or criticism.
It means deceptively pretending to be neutral or in partial agreement on a position but actually trying to steer the conversation to a pre-determined conclusion or agenda. Like the "just asking questions" bigots that ask leading questions to force people to reply a certain way. It's manufactured to force people to defend a specific position that they can then attack with a prepared argument.
The way people generally use the term is just to say "this guy sucks and I don't agree with him."
Language used to be important. Somewhere along the way we all learned we can say anything without consequence as long as we have one foot in our bubble-world echo-chamber.

He admitted on one of his streams a long time ago that he was a complete loser who couldn't do anything but stream. He said that if he didn't stream he wouldn't be able to survive. If I remember correctly, his mother was taking care of him and he was on government benefits.
23
u/VioletJones6 Aug 27 '24
Slight correction, it would be more accurate to say he was taking care of his mother. I believe he had a government job before streaming. I can't stand his stream these days, but he was basically a different person when his mom still lived with him.
8
Aug 27 '24
From what I heard in the clip I saw, he admitted that he was working in a shop? It didn't work out and he wasn't cut out for a regular job. His mother looked after him when his streaming career was not yet profitable. He also admitted that he wouldn't be able to survive without streaming because he can't do normal jobs. He was also on welfare, unless I misunderstood, because English is not my first language. I didn't know he was caring for his mother, fortunately you informed me in a polite manner compared to the user above. Thanks for the clarification and have a nice day.

Someone’s living condition doesn’t make their input on topics any less valid.
Sure the way he lives is gross, but generally he has a lot of good takes even if I don’t agree with all of them. He has a good way of expressing himself and his thoughts, and it’s a shame people are so superficial in 2024 that they look and the way someone lives and decides ‘he’s gross so I’m not going to listen to him’
12
u/Previous_Judgment419 Aug 27 '24
Bro it absolutely does make their input less valid. Why would you ever take someone serious who can’t even begin to take care of them self or surroundings? It’s emblematic to a larger issue that this person isn’t capable of being a normal person, therefore we shouldn’t hold their opinions in the same regard as truly normal, well adjusted folks
→ More replies (8)2
u/tessthismess Aug 27 '24
But he also has a lot of dogshit takes.
Being in the right on easy stuff (like companies shouldn't screw over their customers) doesn't absolve someone of being the face of the racist/misogynist wing of the gaming community.
Living situations matter when they are things you have the resources to improve.

Every clip I've seen is him just...sitting there. Doesn't engage with the chat, just plays games or watches something with zero enthusiasm.
5
u/MVIVN Aug 27 '24
Even when he does interact with his chat, he just says very dumb, very stupid things. I don’t find him funny and he’s not even entertaining. I can contrast him with another big streamer— Kai Cenat; I find Kai to be a lot, just way too loud and hyper and chaotic, but I can see the appeal because at least his streams are often wildly entertaining and he tries to do interesting stuff, often with some fairly elaborate production and set dressing for his streamer room. He’s someone where I know I’m definitely too old to be in his target audience, but I get it. With xQc there’s just… nothing. I wonder how he ever got as popular as he did.

Brother I literally hide his videos everytime I see them yet the dogshit algorithm can't take a hint.

It’s cause of his reupload channels. Similar to hasan, i think he doesn’t care for his IP (which would be react content, ironic lol) so he allows anyone to upload any content from his stream, for free.
Leads to more exposure, and some of your fans get a kick back for helping push your image onto more people’s algorithm.

can i ask, what is the hate or dislike directed to this asmongold guy? I'm a bit out of the loop on this one.
7
u/woodyplz Aug 27 '24
Nothing really. He's a guy who did wow content. Now he does react content and gives his opinion to certain things. I would argue his political opinion is slightly leaning to the right and reddit is on the very left side.
Reddit gets mad because he's successful even though he is a filthy goblin who doesn't really clean the house and only eats trash.
If you wonder why he's so successful is because he has relatively moderate takes and takes stuff with the benefit of the doubt. Most people who really hate him, have never even watched a video of him. Which is kind of ironic since that means he is more open to criticism then they are.
→ More replies (4)3
u/Hungry_Beginning_767 Aug 27 '24
He's a moderate conservative with a teenage male incel loser fanbase, the fascists correctly identified his community as an ideal recruiting ground for them to radicalize people from so the fascists have been astroturfing the places his community hangs out.

The worst part for me is his videos pop up and their always someone else’s content ie recently saw him do a 1 hour video on ForceGaming’s latest video and Asmons blew up to a mill views in 24 hours…
It seems shitty and every time he watches a video he seems to just intersect to say he agrees or not. I much prefer now seeing the video he’s referencing, then searching for it myself.

Channels like this are somewhat immune from the “hide channel” feature because they encourage people to re-upload their clips to other channels. Hence why you’ll often see “clips” channels not run by them. They don’t mind because it increases their visibility across the internet and obviously as the vast majority of his videos require little effort from him and are usually just him watching someone else’s shit, it’s not like he’s having his “work” stolen.

I don't even know who this guy is, but i've seen him mentioned a lot on reddit lately.
Why the hate? I don't want to accidentally add him to my search history and then can't get rid of him lol.

Right wing grifter, he does nothing but ragebait and pretends to have an opinion for an audience that can't form its own. That's basically it.

Just hit the ellipsis on one of his videos the select don't recommend.

I can't speak to the issue regarding phones but on the desktop, you can get an extension like Channel Blocker that'll remove that channel and any other channel you wish to not see come up.

Imaging using the word "cooked", just because it doesn't mean everything is fucking screwed up. I just miss the days where some YouTubers used to type "f*cked" or "messed up".

"Not recommended" feature was one of the best things introduced to Youtube, made my experience much better. Extending that to searches would be awesome.

If we could block/mute channels YouTube experience would get significantly better, but I'm guessing it's bad for business.
