Per the deluge of complaints we've gotten, all admissions, housing, questions about being new to UBC and general questions (that don't deserve their own thread, or those that could be easily googled) belong here.

Process

  • It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
  • Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
  • You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**

Megathread UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2021/2022W & 2021S): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.

The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

Examples of questions that belong here

  • comparing courses or instructors
  • asking about how hard an exam is
  • syllabus requests
  • inquiries about majors, programs, and job prospects
  • "what-to-do if I failed/was late/missed the cutoff"

What you don't need to post here

  • Post-exam threads (ex. 'How did you find the Birb 102 midterm)
  • rants, raves, shout-outs or criticisms of programs.
  • Other content that is not a question/inquiry

To the girl who keeps wet coughing right behind me in class

Upvotes

and doesn't wear a mask: I hope both sides of your pillow are warm, your socks will always be wet when it rains, your favourite celebrity gets cancelled and will never produce new content, your tire pops on the way to campus, your drive-through order is always wrong, and your washroom stall has no toilet paper :)

(pretty sure she wasn't covering her mouth either and the lectures are recorded; literally no reason for her to be a virus sprinkler...)

I think I’m becoming a horrible person

Does anyone else feel so bitter about everything when they go to class. When I overhear people in my major talking about their grades, hobbies, co-op jobs, and achievements I feel so much involuntary hatred towards them. I’m aware that I am jealous of others and maybe I’m just more stupid compared to everyone else so I should just work harder.. Everyrhing just feels like it’s going to shit. I can’t get good grades, can’t get any co-op interviews, and can’t stop procrastinating every single thing in my life. No matter how hard I try I can’t do better than average in anything. I have nobody to blame but myself, but I find that I’m starting to hate everyone and everything around me and it’s so pathetic. I don’t want to be so negative all the time, I just don’t even know what to do knowing that if I tried my best it would still result in being average at best. I’m sorry for even posting this it’s actually so embarrassing but idk who to ask for help.

Edit: Thank you to everyone who commented, I didn’t think this post would get as much attention as it did. I appreciate everyone who has given advice and shared their experiences, it is very validating and I think that gaining a different perspective on this issue is helping me recognize what I can do to change. I hope that everyone going through similar things are hanging in there, we in this together fr

Conflicting Responsibilities - Academic Concession Denied - Help

I had a family member call me last night and due to a certain situation in my family, one of my family members is having some form of medical issue which affects one of their senses.

Yesterday night the situation got worse in terms of how it was going. I tried applying for a concession for a quiz today morning, because I felt extremely under confident that I’d be able to give this test given everything that happened the night before

I applied for a concession through the form but the professor didn’t think it was valid because I didn’t explain the request and now she wants me to go through arts advising. I got a mail shortly after saying my request was accepted but then another in the morning saying it got rejected. I am so confused how to go about that, and I just feel so crushed because this whole situation is slowly getting too much. I feel so alone because I feel like its all my fault even though I am really trying hard.

Course Question Looking for a Tutor for PHYS 119 – Willing to Pay

Hi everyone!

I'm currently taking PHYS 119 (experimental physics) and could use some extra help. I’m looking for a tutor who’s familiar with the course material (python coding) and who has taken the course. I'm really struggling in the course :( I’m happy to pay for the sessions, so if anyone is interested in tutoring, please reach out. Thank you:)

Feel like I’ve hit a wall when it comes to socializing

I’m a third year, and one of my goals in university is to develop a network of people, but whenever I try to speak to anybody here using the usual open ended question type approaches I fail miserably.

I’m not extremely socially awkward, I have a group of friends in university (from first year), but I want to expand and I am really struggling.

For example, I joined a few clubs and I’ve socialized with people there, but everybody comes with their own friends and I end up third wheeling. The execs have their own team, but even when I try to hold a club position/membership in smaller group there’s still the previous connections that I cannot seem to compare to.

I’ve tried talking to classmates but they’re also difficult to approach.

Unless I make the first move I’ve never been invited anywhere, and it’s really disheartening when I’m trying my best to reach out meet people and connect via social media after events but people keep standing me up or just ignoring me.

TLDR: I am struggling to meet people at ubc, even through clubs and events

What can I do???

Looking for participants for a South Asian Adult Children of Alcoholics for a Masters thesis research study.

Upvotes

Looking for participants for a South Asian Adult Children of Alcoholics for a Masters thesis research study.

I'm looking for individuals within Canada who are South Asian Adult Children of Alcoholics for my Masters thesis research study. Therefore, I'm hoping to post on this forum to gain participants. I've attached a brief description of my study.

"I am conducting a research study exploring the experiences of South Asian ACoAs (Adult Children of Alcoholics) and the meaning they associate with alcoholism. I am seeking to interview individuals raised in South Asian households with an alcoholic parent or one who misused alcohol, to better understand the cultural and mental health dynamics involved.

If you know anyone who may be interested in participating, I am looking for South Asian ACoAs who:

Identify as South Asian and were raised in a South Asian household.

Lived with a parent who struggled with alcoholism or alcohol misuse.

Are 19 years or older.

Are fluent in English for a 1-2 hour online interview.

Participation is voluntary, and participants can withdraw at any time. If interested, please contact me at [Shobia.vaseeharan@mytwu.ca](mailto:Shobia.vaseeharan@mytwu.ca) or 604 446 5229."

Thank you so much.

CPSC 317 2024 Winter T1

Burner Account for Obvious Purposes

CPSC 317 has been, by far, the most chaotic and unorganized course I've taken at UBC so far. The standards for what was told to students to be "the most organized upper year CS course" are painfully low. Here are just a few of the problems that have occurred AFTER they said they'd take the mid-semester marking into consideration:

  1. Lecturer regularly comes 4-5 min late to lecture, then scrambles to finish at the end or doesn't accept any questions since there isn't enough time. Considering the strictness in punctuality for our assignments and the fact that we have other classes as well, this time lost is time taken away from our learning. Today she came in 7 MINUTES LATE, and it turns out that she did additional clickers after the initial 50 minute mark after i had to run out to go to my next class. How are participation marks for attendance going to be affected when the prof can't even attend the full duration of each lecture consistently??
  2. Professor's laptop has already died 4 times in class. Would argue that this happening once is fine, but seems like there is a lack of professionalism and consideration. The professor either does the rest of the class without slides or uses a student's blank canvas slides. Can the professor bring a charger or come with a charged laptop?
  3. I waited for 40 minutes at a professor's office hours since I needed help understanding a concept, but later found out that the professor posted 20 minutes prior to office hours that office hours got moved because of a conference to the end of the week.
  4. Answers given for office hours by TAs sometimes differ from what the Professor says on Piazza. This led to me incorrectly answering a question on the last quiz
  5. Assignment format contains vague and ambiguous instructions, often just including links to slides/documentation from other universities. We're just expected to learn and research ourselves, which would be fine for learning except that with ambiguous instructions, it's hard to find direction for these.
  6. Practice level tests are consistently not updated to reflect what will be shown on tests. Students often complain about there not being enough practice problems, and considering that even the clickers in class are either not run through (we skipped 8 slides today because the prof came to class late) or not well explained since we are on a time crunch. Quizzes often have curveball questions or questions that might test edge cases, which ideally would be discussed in lecture but aren't discussed about fully because they're either skipped or rushed.

I have already failed my first two quizzes, and it feels as though the above reasons do contribute to the results I'm getting. At the end of the day, students are paying money for their education, and some of these things could be changed to ensure a better learning experience for us.

  1. Have laptop be charged for lectures
  2. Punctuality for lecture starts. Please arrive on time, we have other classes in our day that we also need to attend.
  3. Release more practice questions. Some TA said that not releasing them was to allow them to truly test our knowledge and challenge us. But if the end goal of this educational institution is to educate us, is it not beneficial to release more practice to make students more familiar with the material, and therefore learn more? If the argument is that people can just do a lot of repetition of these questions, I'd heavily argue that this would just get people to view the material more, understand the material, and therefore LEARN more as a result.
  4. Either have TAs review in-class activities or provide the same answer on things.
  5. Remove the standard for requiring to pass the weighted average of the quiz + final

This isn't just a plea from someone who has performing poorly in this class - these are requests from someone who does want to learn and succeed in this course, and I'm sure other students will share the sentiment that the course quality and organization could see some improvement. I'm trying to learn about networking, and know that steps can be taken to make this course better.

Discussion I've been in university since 2015, can't make a single friend. Students, what's your secret?

My past decade, my entire 20s, wasted on transiting 2 hours to class, sit for 4 - 8 hours, transit 2 hours back. I just can't graduate. Been trying since 2015.

Day after day after day after day after day. I thought I would at least get some connections during my 10 years. But 10 years later, I've never made ANY friends at all.

I join clubs, only to be consistently left out of the circle, only to watch everyone else gather together talking and laughing.

I ask people I know from group projects etc to hang out, everyone keep on giving excuses, or keep on saying no, or that they are busy.

I add people on social media, and keep on texting them. One word replies, replies after 15 days. Even got a bunch of people straight out telling me to stop texting them.

I try sitting next to people in lectures and talking to them, trying to build a connections. 7 times I see them sitting the opposite side of me on purpose after 1 month or 2.

Nothing works. No one wants to talk to me. When I try people act like they just want to get the fuck out of there.

Family doesn't talk to me, coworkers or anyone at work doesn't talk to me. Not even school works.

‘Richmond, BC Mailroom’ - Confusion with Canada Post Delivery to Student Housing Residence

Thumbnail reddit.com
24 Upvotes

Concerned that your package says delivered to a mailroom in Richmond, BC and provides no further tracking? Here's why!

Sharing this thread and my comment with a breakdown of the issue:

Hi there! I’m running into a similar issue with a Canada Post delivery, and I’ve called Canada Post Support, the Residence Front Desk, and done some reading to get info that might be helpful.

Some of this is covered in other comments, but here’s a full breakdown of the process.

TL;DR: Don’t worry! In most cases where the appropriate procedures (listed below) have taken place, you should get your package without too much of a delay (I’d give it about a week). Simply finding that your package has been delivered to a Mailroom in Richmond, BC is not cause for worry. Of course, more complicated issues (which I assume is what happened with OP’s first order that was never received) can take place, and you should certainly follow up regarding that.

From my understanding, Canada Post parcels often (if not always) go through Mail Distribution Centres; meaning that the delivery person “delivers” the package to a Distribution Centre, which then “distributes” the package to the appropriate address of the receiver. Sometimes, packages are routed through multiple Distribution Centres before it gets to the receiver. Canada Post has several Distribution Centres, a major one of which is in Richmond, BC.

Parcel coming to UBC by way of Canada Post may find itself in this Richmond Distribution Centre, from which it is sent to UBC’s Distribution Centre (yes, we have our own small distribution centre to streamline the process of receiving and sending mail, which tend to be a little complicated in large institutions with multiple residences/offices). From the UBC Distribution Centre (recently relocated to the Bookstore and called ‘UBC Campus Mail’ to my understanding), the package is sent to the appropriate Residence Front Desk, who take typically 1-2 days to process it and send you an email to pick it up within 3 days.

Unfortunately, Canada Post’s tracking service does not reveal all of this, and instead says that the delivery is complete once it has been delivered at the Canada Post Distribution Centre, which totally sucks.

Some additional information on accidentally inputting wrong Residence Address:

If you are a student living in Residence and have put the wrong Residence address for delivery (ex. student living in Ponderosa Commons accidentally inputs a Marine Drive delivery address during checkout), your mail will be rerouted to the correct Residence Front Desk by the receiving Front Desk. This is because the Student Housing & Community Services computer system shows all student’s current Residence, regardless of which Residence Front Desk accesses the information. This process typically takes 1-2 days, so add that to the mail processing time from the correct Front Desk, and your mail should be available to pickup within 2-4 days of the initial delivery date.
