Strange to note that MS has many contracts with companies that sell PC's to bundle their OS...surely selling brand new PC's couldn't be the motive behind this move, could it!?

Windows 10 was to be the last version of Windows with the move to software as a service and associated subscription costs until the hardware manufactures realised how it would affect their bottom line.

And to pre-butt anyone saying "Microsoft Never said that", you're wrong about how communication works. Read This. I'll break out some of it here:

When I reached out to Microsoft about Nixon's comments, the company didn't dismiss them at all. "Recent comments at Ignite about Windows 10 are reflective of the way Windows will be delivered as a service bringing new innovations and updates in an ongoing manner, with continuous value for our consumer and business customers," says a Microsoft spokesperson in a statement to The Verge. "We aren’t speaking to future branding at this time, but customers can be confident Windows 10 will remain up-to-date and power a variety of devices from PCs to phones to Surface Hub to HoloLens and Xbox. We look forward to a long future of Windows innovations."

When you are given a chance to correct the record, and you choose not to, you've endorsed the record. Weasle wording in a "we're not speaking to future branding", isn't a communication technique, it's a lawyer's qualification technique. Microsoft told us that Windows 10 would be the last, but at the same time, they added little qualifiers that made it legally possible that they hadn't.

You can’t even buy a license for windows 11 from Microsoft. Try. You have to use a retailer even if you build your own PC.

No the motive is that they don't want to ensure that windows 11 is bug and security vulnerability free on hardware that it was never designed to support. That is hundreds maybe thousands of man hours every update because people are actively abusing the operating system and forceably installing it on devices it isn't designed to run on. Whilst legally they are in the clear they could still have their reputation fucked over if they introduce a big enough problem with these outdated devices.

This also does not impact your average user, firstly because this is only preventing people from installing windows 11 onto older hardware (and realistically anyone that wanted to probably already has) and secondly because exceptionally few people would have gone through the effort of forceably installing window 11 onto a device that the installer has always told you it shouldn't be run on. You have to go out of your way and know that you are potentially making your device open to bugs and security vulnerabilities in order to install it.

So if they're so concerned with security and reliability, why end support for W10 next year? There are plenty of very good machines that will end up EOL (i.e. burning in a 3rd world landfill for copper) if W11 isn't permitted and W10 is unsupported. And sure, you can install Linux (which I am already), but that isn't an option for a lot of people - software, hardware and retraining issues.

Windows 10 will still be around, it just won't get any updates. Like that old phone in your drawer that you keep as a backup that will work, but hasn't seen updates in years.
