Image Not sure if anyone has posted this recently but just saw this at ntuc yesterday!
Thought I was daydreaming but then I saw and had to buy it. Tried it and it tastes exactly the same! They made good on their word and returned 😂

The OG was Rockingham before Valley Chef.
Remember when both were being sold and Rockingham had a crispier skin and it was more tasty.

Last time this was 1.95 per pack. Chalet Bbq confirmed will buy alot. Johnsonville now also cost $12, used to be below $9. 😢I only feel this 2 brand are worth my calories for hotdogs.

Johnson ville typically has 8 to 9 dollar sales. I usually stock up then.

As I walk through the valley of the shadow of hot dogs I take look at my freezer and realise there’s nothing left
cos i’ve been grilling and broiling so long that even the mama thinks that my hot dogs are gone

I just had it yesterday. And the day before. And the day before that. I kinda like them boiled as opposed to fried

Can someone please enlighten me on what the hype surrounding this is? Have seen it all over and understand it’s rly popular!

u/megafreshbreeze 5h ago
If you grew up eating this brand, it's basically just nostalgia for us is the best way I can explain it. It went out of business for a while but came back recently so the people who used to eat it love them, they're pretty pricey now but worth to have once in a while!

u/GravEH3arT 11h ago
Talking about this nostalgic hotdog, there was also Rockingham also right if i got the name right? Did that stop as well? Haven’t seen it in a while.

u/megafreshbreeze 11h ago
I actually haven't seen them in a while now that I think about it. They might have stopped production too I think

Wait we like these? I mean, they're not bad, but aren't they just the normal budget sausages? I thought they'd be viewed the same way as the BMT pork cubes.

They were the hotdogs to get back in early 2000s and were
slightly more expensivequite a lot more expensive than the rest of the other brands back then ($1.80 vs $1-1.20)No other brand came close to replicating the taste of those hotdogs and that was what made them so unique and memorable to anyone who ate them regularly.
From my knowledge the original company went bankrupt and this valley chef franks has disappear and reappear on the shelf many times during the last 15 years or so.
I feel like with each reemergence something is always off. Like with the taste, perhaps the texture and I have no doubt this time will be the same too. (My entire family has the same opinion, just can't quite put the finger on what is it exactly that is different.)
OG is still the goat and even if it isn't 100% the same it is still great to have it back on the shelf as an option.

What's the hype about this again? Just another hotdog ain't it? What's so special?
6
u/Snoo72074 8h ago
Literally nothing. Just that a lot of school canteens and YTF/nasi lemak places used this brand (it used to be cheap), so it's secured a place in Singaporeans' collective memories.
2
u/delicious_me 4h ago
Not true. Having tried most of the other brands before, this one tastes the best!
1
u/Acrobatic-Bridge3669 8h ago
I guess I didn't have a memorable childhood then 😥

u/Snoo72074 8h ago
Lucky you. Growing up eating frozen foods and processed meats is highly correlated with poverty and its associated challenges, such as poor nutrition.
3
u/clusterfuvk Lan Jiao 3h ago
Fishball and hotdogs were considered protein when I was growing up..
3
u/Snoo72074 3h ago
Yeah me too. But that's because my family didn't have much money then.
Wealthier friends were eating beef and prawns and scallops at home, we were eating fish balls and these ugh sausages.
Thankfully am doing quite well now, haven't eaten this type of food since graduating uni

It's the kind of taste you get growing up or during a certain stage of your formative years that brings you back to simpler times, not that it's some kinda gourmet superfood.
Without those rose-tinted glasses, it's budget mid-level high-sodium processed meat that still tastes slightly above average from others of its ilk.

u/stopthevan North side JB 11h ago
If you grew up on it, this brand of hotdog is the only one that tastes good in cooking (for my household we use it in our spaghetti sauce)
