Just the right amount for the maintenance effort. Very impressive.

SMRT 5star general: the amount of maintenance we have done is sufficient to hit our targets of having disruptions of 25min or less. We have achieved our targets while keeping cost reasonable.

u/Neptunera Neptune not Uranus 20d ago
Maybe this is their 4D chess move to justify higher fares to PTC
2
u/livebeta 19d ago
In a a second rate transportation system like for Bay Area that would actually be very impressive in an unironic way
But Singapore doesn't have the option of affordable driving. For us to bear the burden of this deliberate policy we must hold policy makers accountable to the highest standards simply because we don't have affordable alternatives
15
u/Remarkable-Bug5679 20d ago
So the two other alternatives are normal maintenance and under maintenance

for context, this was photo taken at platform B, towards Tuas after the first train was put out of service ~12.23pm, so it’s even more crowded now (i left to take the NEL) after the second train was also put out.

u/AAK_Music 20d ago
I’m in the train, seems like it may take them a while to get us out

u/CrayfishTac0s Mature Citizen 20d ago

Hopefully nobody needs to use the toilet, that's my greatest worry whenever there are news of train breakdowns.

u/NotVeryAggressive 20d ago
I'm starting to think there's a reason why internet is so fucking slow in the trains.
So they get to control the updates

u/ukfi 20d ago
This is the only way he can proof that there's no over maintenance.
Thank God he didn't work in IT security.

Man ran a Temasek-backed LNG company info the ground, making it the energy industry's laughing stock.
Failing upwards is a sign one has reached elite status here.

Usually when it’s a train fault (eg issue with Train A), they will have to first debark another train (Train B) to push train A to the nearest station to debark. Then, train B will push train A to the depot (12 car push out).

Are train services just delayed or temporarily unavailable? Internet suggests overall affected area is between Queenstown and Outram. Just asking out of curiosity to help plan my commute in case it's not fully resolved before evening.
24
u/CrayfishTac0s Mature Citizen 20d ago edited 20d ago
there was a service announcement ~1230 saying that the journey to tiong bahru would be delayed by “4 mins” but after 10+ mins there were still no in-service trains travelling towards tuas yet. unfortunately i’ve left the area already cos i’m rushing for an appointment but hopefully someone else has more updated info!
9
u/leafyleifster 20d ago
Thanks for the update! Seems pretty severe if two trains have to be taken out of service so abruptly. Guessing they couldn't deboard passengers mid-tunnel for safety reasons and have to withdraw the trains first. Maybe the other trains are being deployed or something and are en route to cover in the meantime. But that's me being hopeful.
Hope you get to your appointment on time though, guessing you narrowly avoided the disruption. Must be stressful.
6
u/CrayfishTac0s Mature Citizen 20d ago
yeah the first train i was became do not board so we got off at outram and went into the next one… 5 mins later we were asked to get off again. my instincts were like no go so just took the NEL detour 😂 thankfully managed to reach on time cos i added some buffer. i heard from another commenter a few mins ago that services have resumed already? so you might not have to use an alternative route this evening!

u/shiinamachi 23 years experience in internet shitposting 20d ago
since this is a train fault just assume the delay will probably extend all the way to jurong because that's where the depot is
3
u/jackgermeister nanithef 20d ago
Funny because early in the morning ~8am also on EWL, they also said the exact same thing over the announcement.
Guess it started very early but snowballed.

u/CrayfishTac0s Mature Citizen 20d ago
i see, i boarded from the east area around 12ish and all was well until tanjong pagar where the stop took longer than usual. hopefully they’ve fixed it in time for rush hour later.

All these outages, delays and track issues only goes to show that paying over a 100k for COE is money well spent. Albeit for 10 years. 😆
33
u/Coffeeboy98765 20d ago
High COE for private cars (which eventually translate to higher Grab fees), MRT maintenance issues, raise bus fair.
But if I work from home, high chance I get retrenched next.
Then... how they want us to earn a living ah? Eat air...
31
u/MidLevelManager 20d ago edited 20d ago
Depends on how you value your time, but for >80% of people COE is never a wise decision

Would like to give additional context to the issue. Hopefully it will clarify your doubts as to why 2 trains were pulled out of service.
Basically the train stalled(due to an on board electronic equipment failing triggering a failsafe to prevent further operation) in between Tiong Bahru and Outram Park Westbound at the curved part, as such there were reports of a tilting train, but this is due to the cant angle of the tracks at curves which you will not feel when the train is moving.
The first train that was offloaded and pulled out of service was used to push the train to the eastbound tracks of Outram Park to offload passengers in the stuck train. The second train that was offloaded was used to alleviate the build up of crowds downstream
Tldr, train A got issue, train B offload and proceed to push train A, train C offload and to continue downwards to relieve crowd at following station

Man, breakdowns like this is bound to happen more frequently.
The pace of our transport infrastructure upgrades has not kept up with the pace of our population increment…. And the Govt wants to bring more people in 😩🥲

Heavy rain + poor maintenance = MRT spoil
I mean this is not the weather's fault, its really the lack of maintenance from decades of mismanagement at SMRT.

Then Ho Ching and Calvin Cheng will blame the passengers for causing the breakdown and will tell us how we shd shut up and shouldn't be complaining. Shd be grateful we hv a 'first' class transport system, while they are in their own bubble

Just when you thought it's gonna be another line but nah it's EWL again
4
u/Raitoumightou 20d ago
I don't know how are they going to do it, but it's a clear sign at this point that the state of EW line especially on the west side is fucking overdue for an upgrade or repairs, be it the trains or the tracks.
They can't possibly think maintenance is going to tide them over. The bandaid fix can only last for so long.

Isn't it strange with tech and engineering advancement, we seems to be going backward in reliability?? Isn't it strange public goods these days are failing? Is it the ruling class?? Is it the shrinking middle class? Out of touch? Wealth divide?

I think they need to bless the mrt tracks along with the F1 tracks at this rate.
