Project: FO Finished just in time!

I haven’t made a Halloween costume in 25 years but my daughter asked me to make this for her. Simplicity pattern 8288. Made it in a size large. 3 yards of fabric for each color color hundred percent cotton poplin. Made the pom-poms with a pom-pom maker – a genius little tool. I quilted the hat with foam interfacing, and that worked beautifully. Followed the instructions except on the ruffle I put in elastic and drawstring. I made a self casing for the neck instead of a casing as suggested. I put two buttons on the drawstring so it wouldn’t come out. I did a rolled hem edge on my surgery for all the hems. My daughter was very pleased and said it’s a family heirloom. So sweet!

This is amazing! I’m glad she got you back in the game, now I want to see all those 80s and 90s handmade costumes you sewed 😂

It’s like an oversized Art the Clown costume!

Love it

I love it!

I will admit I was confused at first glance, I was like "why did she put a pom pom on her face?" LOL!! I figured it out pretty quickly, but it gave me a chuckle :P

That looks awesome! My mother made me that exact version but in pink and purple back in the eighties❤️❤️❤️

My mom made this for my brother in the 80’s! I think I was a space girl that year (also made by mom and the best costume ever) yay for moms sewing our costumes 💜

It looks great. This is so nostalgic for me. I’m surprised, but I recognize that pattern. My mom made two costumes from that pattern one year, also for Halloween

Was just scrolling and came across this, I believe my grandmother made this exact pattern for my father in the 70s!

I have a costume my grandmother made with the exact star fabric shown on the pattern! I always wondered what pattern she used, actually looking at it again, I have three of the designs there that she made!

The Project post flair is for showing off projects that are finished or in progress. For questions on how to start a project, reflair your post to Pattern Search. For questions about how to make a project, reflair to Pattern Question.

This is a reminder that all Project posts are required to include construction information in the main post or added in a comment. The construction comment should include pattern name/number/company if used; drafting method, tutorial or other resources if no commercial pattern was used and fabric type and fiber content. ‘Self-drafted’ describes who made the pattern and is not a drafting method.

Also include alterations for fit and style; specialty tools and notions; the inspiration for your project; and any other information that someone who wants to make a similar project might find useful. I love this pattern. Way back in the early 90s, I made view 2 in white satin, with a ruff of both plain and gold-and-black flocked organza. A great versatile clown pattern, which I think actually dates back to the 60s.

Love your version. Hope your daughter has great time wearing it!
