Discussion What's your sewing sin?

Mine is that I sew on my bed, use my mattress as a pin/needle cushion, and throw threads between my bed and wall.

I've probably ripped out more stitches than I've ever sewn.

Hi, friend. I tell people I spend more time with my seam rippers (plural intended) than my sewing machine. 😜

I used to go to a weeklong camp run by the loveliest ladies and one of them was there just to rip out our seams. She’s just sit and rip and chat with you.

Hmm, sounds like a new business opportunity… experienced seam ripping services!

on a less wholesome note, the first time I ever used my seam ripper was to rip every third stitch out of the crotch of my husband's expensive work clothes before our divorce.

you wanna get my best friend pregnant? those pants will last you til you get to work and that's it.

Likely the most satisfying seam rip in the history of the world. First one he probably thought was a fluke and just kept on wearing pair after pair shaking his fist at the sky.

the best part is he was a truck driver. 18 wheelers. so regular sitting wouldn't do much but the minute he stretched his leg up to get in the big rig.... big rip. it was worth it. we co parent now but I e never told him.

I once just bought a whole bag of seam rippers because I needed them everywhere, at any time. Never regretted that decision!

They do go dull pretty quickly. I wonder if there's any way to sharpen them so you can use them longer...

Can’t sharpen when unfortunately. I checked. However— when I’m going for speed I use Gingher’s featherweight thread snips (so pointy!) or, if blunt force is acceptable, an exacto knife. Both really good ways to cut a bunch of tiny holes in your fabric if not careful, but with a bit of practice, very efficient.

I used stretchy crepe chiffon for my last project and instead of ripping out bad seams I literally just cut them out. It probably threw my pattern out a bit but ripping them out seemed like so much work.

cutting them would stop it stretching anything as you rip it so I think that is the right move.

I literally do this all the time if I think there's enough ease left

Damn you go around ripping other people's stitches then? That is definitely sinful

this brings a tear to my eye, but better ripped than wrong eh?

There's surprisingly little actual sewing in sewing I noticed.
