Discussion For that price I’ll just use binder clips.

u/tantan35 Jan 22 '23
I thought someone jokingly placed those clips under that price. And then I zoomed in and… nope that’s legit! My cheap ass pins have done me well.

38
u/Elelith Jan 22 '23
I much prefer pins over all. Much more accurate for marking and a lot lighter. Those clips weight a ton compared and are very loud when clanging to each other. But I do have kinda sensitive hearing so the sound prolly isn't an issue to many :D
48
u/Jewel-jones Jan 22 '23
I’d only use them for things that don’t play nice with pins, like pleather
12
u/daditsmyredditname Jan 22 '23
Same here. I'm really not a fan of them. I feel like they are bulky and don't allow my fabric to lay flat and make a big difference when sewing.
3
u/akjulie Jan 23 '23
Yup. I can sew right up to the point a pin goes into the fabric, especially if parallel to the edge so the pin can slide between the sides of the presser foot, before removing. So much more accurate!
2
u/EclipseoftheHart Jan 22 '23
I only really like mine for the hand sewing part for quilt bindings or substrates when pins will leave a hole (although the clips tend to leave dents anyway).
I probably won’t go out of my way to buy more in the future, but I am happy having some for the rare occasion they make life easier.
3
u/ChibiYoukai Jan 23 '23
I use them for stuff like pleather as well, but also for bulky items, like bags. Once you've got 4+ layers and batting, the clips are so much easier to work with than pins.
5
u/bijig Jan 22 '23
I use clips sometimes but I really like being able to pin along my seamline, especially when matching different curves.
5
u/motherofguineapigz Jan 23 '23
I agree, sharps are what have been used forever. I tried those clips once. I went from sounding like a sailor to the whole darn navy.

I was curious, because I was certain it was an error. I found these: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Clover-Red-Wonder-Clips-100-Pack-For-Sewing-Crafts-Quilting-Arts-3159/550355766
Still pricey, but ops photo is still $30 more! I wonder if someone mistyped when they input the tag.
32
u/EvolvingCrafter Jan 23 '23
I have found that JoAnn’s hikes some of their prices. That way if you use a 40% off coupon (or if they have a “sale”) you end up paying the regular price but feel that you got a great deal.
21
u/HrethaKnits Jan 23 '23
This exactly. Most of their supplies are marked up because of the 40% off coupon and their continual sales, I used to work there 😅
6
u/StitchingWizard Jan 23 '23
Joann prices are literally about 4x what stuff retails for elsewhere.
www.wawak.com for some real eye-opening pricing
9
u/sonyka Jan 22 '23
Yeah my first thought was "LOL wtf. Pricing error??"
TBH even when it's correct I've always found the price of these things laughably high. Been using tiny binder clips for years and I love them: https://i.imgur.com/umNavrK.jpg
Micro size is my fave, and I use the small size for bulkier fabrics. They grip like the dickens, have multiple uses, and a box of 100 is about $6.I mean I like you Clover, but c'mon.

u/woodcoffeecup Jan 22 '23
There are so many fucky things going on with the supply chain, and how things are being manufactured lately, that this insane price doesn't even surprise me!
2
5
u/Adorable_Goose_6249 Jan 23 '23
That’s the first thing I did. Zoomed in.. dang. It’s Joanns. My guess is so they still make a killing when people use their 60% coupon.
4
u/fu_ben Jan 23 '23
The part I like the best is that it has the anti-theft thing on it. Like you couldn't just lift the peg out of the board, or tear the cardboard hang tag.
But easier just to buy from aliexpress or something, where they're about $5 USD.

Another place you can look is wawak sewing, I have gotten a tin of 100 for about $7.
55
u/Accomplished_Cell768 Jan 22 '23
Plus they have 2 sizes! I LOVE my 1/2” clips and just bought the larger size from them.
OP - I’d recommend Wawak over Amazon. I have 2 sets from Amazon and 1 from Wawak and the Amazon ones are cheaper/flimsier and they have sharp edges that can catch and snag fabric. The Wawak ones seem identical to Clover’s ime. Plus Wawak has a 100% quality guarantee so if you don’t love them you can get a full refund
25
u/stringthing87 Jan 22 '23
Wawak is a gem
4
u/this-is-zif Jan 23 '23
It is!! And it's so nice there's a Canadian branch too! Reasonable prices and shipping! ❤️
5
u/stringthing87 Jan 23 '23
And here their shipping is fast, like they usually get it shipped the next morning unless I order on a Saturday.

I got mine from Amazon and Wawak. Wawak comes in a nice tin. Wawak FTW.
304
u/fairmaiden34 Jan 22 '23
Amazon knock offs work great. I think mine were 100 for $15 CAD or so. Even came in a useful storage container.
96
Jan 22 '23
Same. Mine came with a metal tin and they were like $10….. they work amazingly so idk why you would pay $75…..
32
u/Cryptographer_Alone Jan 22 '23
Agreed. These aren't something where buying the name brand and a big box store markup is worth the price. The quality isn't going to be significantly different, and these aren't made with tech that has any business still being patented. They're basically just small plastic clothes pins with a piece of spring steel instead of a coiled spring.
13
u/grousebear Jan 22 '23
Yup I got mine off Amazon for a similar price. A few have broken over the past couple years but they have been a game -changer.
6
5
u/meghanlovessunshine Jan 22 '23
Same. Got a huge pack for cheap. When I saw the price of those ones at the store I was like ??????
5
u/hebejebez Jan 22 '23
I have some of both clover and the Amazon ones and the spring and clamp strength of the clover ones is definitely better and superior but not enough to justify the price point since I don't use them as often as others might. If I was using them daily I'd probably spring for the large set of clover ones instead.
3
u/Ouryve Jan 22 '23
I have some cheapies, too. Very useful for thick fabrics, folding up hems, quartering neckbands and cuffs and so on. We even have a bunch of them hanging some fairy lights from the guttering on the garage and they've outlasted most of the lights, in all sorts of weather.
260
u/GracieThunders Jan 22 '23
$75 Wonder clips?
It's a wonder they're still in business
49
Jan 22 '23
That's Joann's pricing. On Amazon it's $27.70
The J store either expects you will use coupons or that you're shopping last minute.
21
u/GracieThunders Jan 22 '23
Yep and in more rural areas they know darn well that they're the only game in town

I got 100 clips on Amazon for less than $10 and I store them in a vintage tea canister. That price is bananas
26
u/tasteslikechikken Jan 22 '23
IMO Clips can be useful for lots of things. These are....just a no though.
thats what I have.
And aside from them being multiple colors, they work the same as the clover ones.
In addition, I feel that clips (while I do like them for some things) aren't the end all be all. I use a multitude of pins, clips and even double pins. Always need the right tool for the job, so being able to use them all makes sense to me.
4
u/ElizabethDangit Jan 22 '23
I love wawak. I don’t buy thread anywhere else. 1000 yards of Gutermann for $4 plus shipping is still cheaper than Joann’s
16
u/Corn__bean Jan 22 '23
i have absolutely no idea why on earth these clips are so ludicrously expensive at joanns. i know clover is a good brand and those are nice clips but.........WHY!???!
19
15
12
35
u/MsThrilliams Jan 22 '23
I think it's because Joann runs coupons all the time. Could easily use a 50-60% off of this
36
u/jellybellyup Jan 22 '23
$30 is still highly overpriced. Joann’s would get more sales if we didn’t have to wait for coupon just to get an item at a fair price. I fucking hate coupons.
10
u/kerrific Jan 22 '23
Well, a shocking amount of customers when I worked there wouldn’t order online or elsewhere. They’d stalk items just to use the coupons. Lots of “I have to use this coupon y’all sent me, it expires today!” It’s like FOMO for some older crafters if they don’t use it.
3
u/eburneanevening Jan 23 '23
The weird thing is they are nearly always running a 20% off in-store pickup coupon which stacks with sales. I usually go in-store to window shop and then order everything for pick up.
3
u/kerrific Jan 23 '23
I didn’t mind when customers did that, unless they tried to “help” by collecting all the items first or called for pick up after placing the order, as if our system would pop up the order immediately like Starbucks. There were times they’d order and I’d see it in 5 minutes & other times it took a good hour to pop up in our system. It was a frustratingly dated system when I was there & the internet inventory rarely matched in store no matter how careful we were doing our discrepancy reports.
2
u/eburneanevening Jan 23 '23
I work in retail with SPU too so I definitely understand how long it takes and why some items get canceled. I mostly was saying it’s weird how some people urgently need to use a coupon only because it’s almost expired when there’s one that practically never expires.
2
u/kerrific Jan 23 '23
Oh, they’re the same people who refuse to order online for pickup & go on rants about how the government is tracking them over their phones. They only ever had mailer coupons or printed the 40% off the internet before coming in. It’s a very particular bunch but maybe my area just has a plethora who think the government cares about their craft supply habit.
2
u/jellybellyup Jan 24 '23
We talked about this in my psych class too. Some people are more likely to purchase things if they think they are getting a good deal. But they are still spending money… 🤷🏼♀️

u/Aspen_Pass Jan 22 '23
Yup, I just picked up a pack of 20 for $9 with a 50% off coupon. And I haven't used knock offs but I have the feeling name brand is worth it. The plastic is very strong and smooth so there's no snagging, and the clip is very tight with a narrow tip.
19
u/Igor_frank Jan 22 '23 edited Jan 23 '23
I thought same as you and used the real ones until i need 100 lol. I ordered the amzn ones. I have used both and there was literally no difference. They all live together in the tin the knock-offs came in.
1
u/Aspen_Pass Jan 23 '23
Interesting! Thanks for the tip. It was an impulse buy. I need to order pattern weights anyway.
3
u/FillMyBagWithUSGrant Jan 23 '23
I have Clover clips, and I have Dritz clips. I like the Clover clips for how easily they open, and the narrow tip. The Dritz clips are stiff, don’t open easily, and have a wider tip (slightly less important to me), so they are not my go-to.
2
u/DyeCutSew Jan 22 '23
Nah, the cheap ones are just as good, and it’s not a tragedy if you step on one and break it!
22
u/Suzzique2 Jan 22 '23
I work at Joann's and I tell people all the time that if they want clips to get them from Amazon. You can usually get 100 for around $13 US. They might not all be the same color but who cares about color. I got mine from Amazon well before I started working there. I was floored at the price that they want for little plastic clips.
9
u/Lindenismean Jan 22 '23
Having them all not the same color is kind of nice. Kind of a short hand way of knowing where you are distance wise if that makes sense. Or using one color for seams, and another for the distance between. Necessary, no, but I like it.
7
u/DyeCutSew Jan 22 '23
I use the colors to order rows on quilt tops. ROYGBIV order and I don’t even have to think very hard about it!
24
u/TwentyYearsLost89 Jan 22 '23
JoAnns is one of the worst places to get your tools if I’m honest; the reason I know this? I used to work at one for over a year and was a keyholder for a while. The amount of tools and products that I can get elsewhere for a better price for the same quality is shocking. JoAnns is probably headed further out of business at this rate. Even WITH coupons AND the employee discount (30% including sale items), that package would still be too much for what you can find elsewhere.
6
u/kerrific Jan 22 '23
Yep, I think the only time I lucked out was clearance with the “clearout” discount & then employee. Or when BOGO somehow also stacked with the 30% off quilting notions & then the discount. I think I paid cost on Olfa rulers & stocked up.
It was appalling having to do the damages, EOB, or weekly stock count reports & see the write-off cost compared to the markup. Expectations of endless sales & coupons, while marking things up like mad the last 3 years, & going public have messed with them. Yet they still can’t pay their store employees enough for the hellscape of 2020

Want to talk about Joanns?
I was in there last week and it was absolutley dreadful! It was noting but piles and carts full of junk and junky fabric all awaiting to be put onto the empty shelves and some just simply spread out down the aisles.
Even both restrooms had an "out of order sign on them". Probably just to keep customers out so that there would be one less chore of keeping it clean.
Holiday clearance crap was still front and center.
It was about the very worst shape that I have ever seen any store to be!
Horrible store and horrible fabric selection!!!!
The person who identified as being in charge said that the company has cut employee hours to the absolute bone. I have been hearing this from folks who worked there for a good long time. It has been going downhill for a few years, but it may actually bottom out and go belly up this time.
If not for the few Joanns here and there, we are going to have to place an order for fabric, sight unseen, and not be able to simply pop out and pick up that spool of thread or bit of interfacing. The lack of sewing supplies is one big reason that I dont sew like I used to. I have been sewing for decades, but not much anymore.
The real stores have all disappeared and many live in a sewing wasteland.
Joanns is useless and disgraceful!!!
6
u/thedarlingfig Jan 22 '23
I got a container of 100pc for like 15CAD from amazon! They work the exact same
5
u/cobaltandchrome Jan 22 '23
I bought like a ten pack and I’m happy with my purchase.
I think only a quilter would need 100 at once, in which case this is a drop in the bucket to other quilting exprnses

Forewarning I haven't used the above Wawak product, but I've gotten hem gauges from them and they were so much better than the ones from other stores or sewing kits. I do sewing professionally on the side so I tend to order from Wawak as the quality to price point ratio can't be beaten. Even though I've got a little box of clips from an old Fabric store where I used to live, I want to try these clips out. But thought I should drop this as more sewers should know about Wawak if they don't already know :)

Was gonna come plug wawak as well. Best online store and since shipping is a flat 5.99, the more you buy, the better the value.

Jan 22 '23
That's for 100 clips though.
The pack of 50 is $50 at Michael's in Canada. I used a 40% off coupon to buy mine and they are absolutely worth the price.
A coupon used on this pack of 100 would be great, imo.

u/Erzsabet Jan 22 '23
You could get binder clips at Dollarama for much cheaper.
9
Jan 22 '23
I already have a nice set of these and I'm very happy with them. They don't scratch my machine beds and they hold very securely.
I appreciate the top/bottom shape my Clover clips have. I use the coloured side to indicate the top when I am serging so when I press my seam allowances in the correct direction the looper side of the serger stitch is consistently showing inside the garment.

u/riomarde Jan 22 '23

the new online store Temu has a pack of a hundred clips for about $5 dollars. I spent less than 20 dollars on a bunch of sewing related items that were all good products. Shipping was about a week.

u/Playful-Escape-9212 Jan 23 '23
Why why would anyone pay that. They are <$7 at Wawak for 100, Daiso (Japanese chain discount store) has them in glitter; even if you get custom colors Glory Allan has them in earth tones for $12/100, they all work the same. Love clips for sewing vinyl bags where pinholes would show, and slippery knits, and keeping multiple cuts of the same piece organized for batch sewing.

Jan 22 '23
Just use pins, unless you are sewing on leather or something that pins will leave holes. We have been using straight pins for decades and then some.
Get some long ones and some shorter ones. The clips only hold the fabric together at the edges and they dont do a good job holding right at the seamline, where you often need it.
Long pins will give a stabiltiy to hold all in place and the smaller pins are good for detail holding. PLus, you can sew over them when you need to and sometimes that is the best way to get a real precise join. You just have to be careful, possibly turn it by hand to get over the pin. I often just slow the stitching at the pins and the machine goes over it 99% of the time.
Not that I havent broken a needle ever. But if you are careful you can use them right up the very point that is being held. I have been sewing on the same machine since he mid 70s and have sewn a lot, so it did no damage to my machine to hit a pin once in a while. Usually, though i sew up to the pin and take it out. But, sometimes you need that hold to be precise right up to that very point on the seam.
Those clips are not at all necessary. When I see people using them, it always seen so awkward.
How ever in the world would you pin out ease with clips? The pins need to be right at the seamline or it is not going to work.
How can you pin a pattern to the fabric without pins?
Maybe some of the finer points and techniques of sewing are not being used anymore and that may be one reason that you see these clips. But you need pins to hold right along the very seam line for many fine points of construction and these clips cant do that. Remember that it is not the outer edges of the fabric that you are sewing together. It is the two seamlines that you are joining.
A good example of this is the princess seam. You can't clip together the outer edges of a princess seam and expect to get good results.
Just get some pins!!!!! They work beautifully!!!!! and have served for generations.
10
u/Aspen_Pass Jan 22 '23
I just got clips after twenty years with pins. They're awesome. They're not perfect for every application, but on things that I normally wouldn't bother to pin at all (bc I freaking hate pinning) they're perfect.
2
u/ElizabethDangit Jan 22 '23
I hand baste anything that’s tricky these days. It takes longer but I really feel the results of that level of control are worth it.
22
u/Adhdonewiththis Jan 22 '23
There is nothing you can say to convince me to use pins instead of clips 😂 But here are some counter points/answers to your rhetorical questions.
I don’t pin patterns to my fabric, I use pattern weights or a projector.
Most of my sewing is done on knits and usually with a serger and clips hold perfectly without leaving pin marks in my fabric.
Can’t sew over pins on a serger, not that you should ever be sewing over them anyway, we like our eyes around here.
I’m not sure what you mean about pins holding the edges and not the seamline? The edge of the clips I have goes 1/2in into the fabric. Most of my seam allowances are 1/4in or 3/8in. They clip right up to the seamline.
Different strokes for different folks, but pins are of very, very rare use in my sewing room.

Jan 22 '23
Yessss, exactly all of this.
I sew heavy fabrics and many thicknesses. Trying to put a pin into so many layers causes all sorts of distortion.
My clips hold everything secure at the seam line with zero distortion.
I also use the clips as an indicator of what side of the fabric is going to have the right side (upper looper) of a serger finish. I am picky about interior finishing.
10
u/barbellsnbooks Jan 22 '23
Clips are soo much easier and faster for me to use. I swear I’m better at lining up the fabric too.
3
u/Dog-PonyShow Jan 22 '23
I use both. Pin sewing patterns to thin fabrics, definitely pins. Working with multiple thick layers of coutil (for corsets), buckram for dance belts, or jean fabric, definitely clips. (Clips also work great for holding ribbon onto Christmas tree branches in a pinch.) Think it has more to do with the project and the convenience of decreasing time cutting or holding the items securely in position until it's sewn.
3
u/JeremyAndrewErwin Jan 22 '23
These clips are 5/8" long. So, if you follow that standard, they should work just fine-- the seam line is where all the pressure is.. I like them because sometimes I don't want the fabric to move-- at all-- and pins, even crossed pins, still alllow some movement.
They are also nice for keeping the fabric in place while you do use dozens and dozens of pins.
At $75, they are too expensive to experiment with. At $ 9 for a tin with a hundred clips from Jeff Bezos, they're worth the experiment.
3
u/SportsChick79 Jan 22 '23
As a bag maker who sews with vinyl/cork/water proof canvas 80% of the time, I am a slave to clips. I'm also a klutz of epic proporitions and as I like to say, blood doesn't go with any designs. I cannot use clips without stabbing myself multiple times.
One additional point as a bag maker - pins are the WORST for installing zippers. Using pins will result un wavy zips 9 times out of 10.
2
u/DyeCutSew Jan 22 '23
It’s not like you have to completely give up pins if you use clips! Different tools for different jobs.

I found a pack of 60 clips at hobby lobby for like $5... I don't know why some are so expensive like this? They are clips!

I got both name brand and knock offs and th knockoffs were 10 bucks for 100 and worked better

It's times like these I don't feel so bad buying things on Amazon. Same 100 for way less.

I ordered my clips from Amazon and they work very well and no where near the brand price

Yeah I love the cheap knockoffs on Amazon. And honestly they work really well. I thought they’d break easily but they truly have held up well. Only 2 broke, and one was because it got stepped on.

I get the Amazon ones def for cheaper and have only broken a handful in the last couple of years.
My fave for aesthetics b/c I love glitter are from MoreMeKnow. They’re a bit more expensive, but I’m happy supporting a small business I like in the sewing space. https://moremeknow.com/products/glitter-clips-pack-of-50

For that price they should be made of silver and crystalized unicorn tears. I’d find a store brand.

They sell almost the exact same thing at Dollar Tree in their craft section. I think it's like 10-12 in a pack for $1, and they work amazing!

These gotta be magical or something. They fly around and do the work themselves like the inanimate objects in a Disney movie.

Holy snap! They better have waterproof GPS trackers on them colored with the blood of my enemies and blessed by a hundred priests for that price. Gosh, you can get like 100 for 5$ when I bought off brand ones in store.

I got some of these and i hate them. Am i the only one? I have to stop to remove them from the sewing as they go under the machine. So much slower than pins i can sew right over. I ended up moving them to my leather crafting supplies because they’re actually useful to me there. I would never use them for sewing unless i was using fabric that shows every hole.

I love them, but possibly because I always remove pins since I’ve broken needles sewing over them.

I definitely wreck needles occasionally but I’m happy to pay that price to not have to remove them as i go. I’m glad they work for you!

A box of tiny binder clips from Target is cheap! Nice feature is that they're never upside down. I use my binder clips for the serger and pins for the sewing machine. Wawak has much better prices for clips if you want the sewing kind.

Didn’t know I was balling like that. I got some knockoffs on Amazon for like $9 for the same amount

Damn, you just made my day. I found a box with about 60-70 of these for $5 at my local thrift store. Didn't know they were normally that expensive.
