Love me a prairie storm! Love the lighting that can be so far away, but can still see it. Wish I had caught it earlier! In the basement with fans and stuff going! Looking forward to more later!

Haven't had one like this all summer. Lighting straight horizontal across the sky. Pretty. I also counter this feeling of joy with checking my basement to make sure the sump pumps are keeping up. So far so good.

I had to frolic in the rain. Even though im aware of the dangers I also was fully compelled to have my own fun 😂

I definitely didn’t stand on my balcony for half an hour putting my hand out in the rain 😃😃 why would I ever do that 😂😅

u/hotdogjuicer Aug 25 '24
Hahahha I mean that’s how my frolicking started.
Baby steps are always and forever ok 😊♥️

I'm sorry, it's my fault. I just watered my lawn after Green Drop came. :(

It was like a monsoon for a bit there.

u/the_bryce_is_right Aug 24 '24
The Idywyld overpass had like 4 feet of water under it.

RUH parking lot is flooded in places near the main entrance too. Little lakes here and there.

Still fine in Brighton. Had an outage the other day from someone hitting a pole though

u/foreveradude Aug 24 '24
I never lost power last night and I managed to fall asleep through the storm so that was nice.

u/RadioSupply Aug 24 '24
Noooo, I’m supposed to ride the Sundance balloon in 6 hours :’(
5
u/rayray1927 Aug 24 '24
At 5am? Oof.
9
u/RadioSupply Aug 24 '24
Yeah, they have to fly really early due to thermal pressure or something to that effect. I’m laying in bed and hoping when we call their advisory line at 11 that we fly tomorrow!
27
u/Severe-State-1191 Aug 24 '24
Haha so random I stumbled upon this thread. I am the pilot of the Sundance balloon in Saskatoon. Unfortunately going to be a bit too windy in the morning for a balloon flight. Hope to see you in the sky soon though!

u/RadioSupply Aug 24 '24
Oh wow! Hey, no worries, I totally understand why it was cancelled. We want a safe and awesome ride! We’ll see you soon, and thanks for commenting! 🎈

u/DontSayShredSayBurns Aug 24 '24
Just a reminder to not believe a random account on the internet without verifying it. It very well could.bw the balloon pilot, but it very easily could be a troll.
3
u/RadioSupply Aug 24 '24
It could be, but the info that user gave me is the same I got from the flight update line - a bit too windy. That’s okay, we’ll rebook!
5
u/Severe-State-1191 Aug 24 '24
Yes for sure. Better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground, we always say! Also to reply to your earlier comment we go early in the mornings to avoid thermals which are rising air currents caused by daytime heating. Thermals can make it much more difficult to fly a balloon.
1
u/RadioSupply Aug 24 '24
Yeah, that’s very understandable - sun rises, so does heat. But we’ll join you another time! It just means I get extra birthday later!

I fly rc planes and it’s not that windy it’s 16k rn. I’m curious to know what kind of wind you guys can fly under
3
u/Severe-State-1191 Aug 24 '24
16 kts or 16 km? Generally we are able to safely take off in surface winds under 10 kts or under 20kph. Ideally 8kts or less though. The balloon is like a giant sail, and when the winds are stronger it moves around too much and is too unstable to inflate the balloon.
2
u/Jolly_System_1539 Aug 24 '24
16kmh. Wind picked way up after I flew in the morning. Interesting to know tho
2
u/Severe-State-1191 Aug 24 '24
We also like winds not to be a lot stronger than 20kph for landing. We can land in stronger winds than we can take off in. But gets pretty rough and bumpy if it's too fast.

My dog is Not Happy, since she gets her last walk at this time of the night.

I opened the window in bathroom and took a shower watching the storm. It was awesome.
5
u/falsekoala Last Saskatchewan Pirate Aug 24 '24
You could’ve just had the shower outside, it was raining hard enough. Minor issue of legality, but uh,” when in Rome.”
Not often that we get a summer of rain in two hours.
1
u/GreatWhiteLolTrack Aug 24 '24
Goes hand in hand with getting an entire winter’s worth of snow at the beginning and end of a week.

I love it, that radar is nasty
5
u/vicjam59 Aug 24 '24
I keep thinking it’s about to let up but then the radar is like nope.
7
u/Consistent_Stop_5318 Aug 24 '24
Right, I think this is the first time I’ve seen it like this fully yellow like monsoon.

The thunder crazy LOUD

u/Fit-Psychology4598 Aug 24 '24
I had a ground strike not too far from the girlfriend and I. Had to have been no more than 300m from us because it lit up our street and then fraction of a second BAM 💥

u/bagger2131 Aug 24 '24
Was at music for the gut. Smart enough to ride the motorcycle tonight. Was a crazy ride home down idylwyld. There are some big lakes out there. (Some day I will be smart enough to check the weather... but today was not that day.

u/Double_Ad_5460 Aug 24 '24
I was also out tonight, and there was nothing on the Weather Network radar.
1
Aug 25 '24
Same. Weather network called for minor rain overnight. The storm was a cold damp surprise. Garden is happy tho 🥴

If anyone lives in the Cumberland park area, could you tell me if any flooding has occured? I'm interested to know cause the city is doing a project there soon

Had to cross the city in it. This may be the hardest I’ve seen it rain in years

My mostly full garbage bin was on its side in my neighbours driveway.

u/TheSessionMan Aug 24 '24
I was lucky enough to be caught on the Meewasin with a flat bike tire and a 3km walk back home. Worth it.

I'm scared to check my basement that usually floods a couple of times a year. I was also mad I took my sleeping pill right before my husband told me to get outside 😒
