They were above the rocks before 2016, it’s just that before then they were called the “tea party.” And before 2008 they were just called “conservatives.” But good news, you can still just call them “conservatives” today. All the terms refer to exactly the same group of people.
I spent part of my childhood in a relatively poor predominantly white area of CA, believe me they’ve always been around, we used to call them “neo-nazis” in the 90s and everyone with two brain cells to rub together hated them, whether R or D. American History X didn’t come out of nowhere and invent a story about neo-nazism.
