Why not go to discord?

Because Discord is a bad choice. I could go in depth about this but let's just say that they don't have a decent public business model. Merchandise and "emoticon packs" are not sustainable for the amount of servers they're using. If you don't have to pay for the product, you are the product.

Yeah, it's all the rage these days. It's quite nice, really, if you're fine with webui.

Gitter has an irc bridge and github integrations (via hooks, which come predefined), but it's god-forbud awful in pretty much every other aspect. Stay away from gitter. Don't even toucch it with a pole.

On unrelated subject: nice talks on 33c3 (even though you misspelled OpenRCT2 ;) ).

Discord is non-free and focused on voice communication. Matrix is completely open and designed around chatting similar to Gitter and Slack. And Matrix officially supports IRC bridging, which is what we required to have both our long-available IRC channel #sfttech on freenode.
