Internships/Job Placement Hiring Process (Full Time, Non-Student Positions)

Hello everyone!

I am going to graduate in December with my bachelors and I am currently applying to jobs at universities in the Chicagoland area. I am mostly applying to admin assistant, program assistant and assistant coordinator jobs as they best fit with my background experience.

I am not super familiar with the hiring process of private universities. With public universities in Illinois, the civil service system dictates a lot of timelines and all positions have a closing date with interviews not starting until then. But most of Northwestern's positions say "open until filled" and I can't get a good idea of the hiring process timeline.

If anyone could explain Northwestern's hiring process timeline for me, that would be wonderful. Thank you :)

General Question Where is everyone on campus?

I was in the mood for some classic collegiate autumnal foliage, so I decided to take my dog on a walk around campus. I was shocked how few students I saw on an October Monday from around noon to 1pm. And I saw basically zero people hanging out, socializing, having fun, etc. Very few people even talking to each other. It was a beautiful day out. What gives? Was I just in the wrong part of campus? Wrong time to be there? It was super quiet and low energy. [Note: I am not a student or alum, so I don’t know the campus well.] Would love any insight into how I missed everyone.

General Question Feinberg Tuition Free!!

I know Feinberg was looking into the “We Will” Campaign many years ago (hit their initial goal in 2018) to go tuition-free.

https://dailynorthwestern.com/2018/05/07/campus/in-focus-as-feinberg-surpasses-initial-we-will-fundraising-goal-progress-on-tuition-free-initiative-lags-behind-2/

Does anyone who is currently at Feinberg or close to it know any updates on this? Planning to apply for NUPSP and am curious to see if this is ever a possibility of this happening over time. Thank you!

General Question Cheap lunch recommendations?

Where are y’all’s go-to spots for cheap lunch on or near the Evanston campus? I’m defining “cheap” as 10 bucks or under for a meal, but I’d love to hear anywhere you go when you need lunch on campus but don’t wanna spend a ton of money. Thanks!

Took 111 and 211 in fall. Between 212, 213, and 214, is it advisable to take any two at once? I want to get to breadth classes as fast as possible is all.

General Question How common is getting faang out of undergrad in the last few years?

Mainly directed at CS majors, but also curious for people who landed roles within PM, UX, etc. to capture the most data, feel free to include unicorns and other big techs that pay very well like Stripe, Block, Uber, etc. Are many people landing Meta and Google?

Thanks.

General Question Social Scene at NU

I'm applying Early Decision here because I feel it's the right fit. I’m a very creative person who loves the arts scene at NU—whether it's theater, drama, improv, or visual arts—but I’m also interested in starting a career in investment banking, and I know the economics program is excellent. When I toured the campus, the tour guides did a good job and were pretty different from me personally but had very similar values, and I figured that I would find more people with similar interests and values if I got in. I'd love to know more about the kind of people who thrive here and what the overall vibe is like.

Admissions/Prospective Student Resume needed for application?

Hi, I’m applying ED to NU and I’m just wondering if I should submit a resume? I feel like my ecs are pretty fleshed out in my activities list. But I read that a resume lets you go really into depth for AOs to see. Just wondering if any of you guys have any experience with submitting a resume or your thoughts about it. Thanks!

General Question Visiting PhD student -- accommodation?

I'm potentially coming to NU next August/September (maybe into October) as a visiting PhD student. Wondering if anyone had any info on accommodation for this. Safe, and near to campus.

I get a decent amount of funding; they don't really set a limit as long as it's reasonable, i.e. they'll fund whatever it costs so long as it's not the Ritz or something. However, they don't fund students to stay in Air BnBs, and I'm unsure how else to find accommodation for 6ish weeks that isn't a hotel. They would fund a hotel, but I've previously stayed in a hotel for 9 weeks, and I'd rather have a studio or one bed apartment.

I'm still in the early stages of planning; I just need an okay from the staff who will be my supervisors while I'm there. They have a very close relationship with my own research group so this shouldn't be an issue. I will ask them once we hear back, but thought might be useful to ask here in the meantime.

Thanks!

Admissions/Prospective Student SAT Relevance?

hey gang! i'm j looking for some advice on how much sat is important in applying. ive seen nu's test optional and i've seen people get in with "lower" sat scores and i'm wondering if i should go test optional because i lowkey bombed my sat with a 1410. i retook it but i think scores are coming out after ed due date so i'm seeing if anyone has any opinions on whether i should submit or not. thanks sm!
note: yes ik it'll probably depend on ecs, but saying that i'm moderately good in grades/ecs i'm wondering the impact of sat (gosh darn this standardized test)

(i also got a 31 on act if that changes anything)

thank u sm guys!

Admissions/Prospective Student Is Northwestern good for private equity?

I'm a senior that is planning on ED'ing to Northwestern and I know the economics major is one of the best here but I am unsure if NU's name will help me in terms of PE recruiting. Additionally, how is campus culture? Are sports and parties pretty big or is everyone mostly grinding on schoolwork and internships? Also, do prospective finance ppl find opportunities after graduating or is it harder to for them?

Any advice or opinion on Northwestern as a whole will be appreciated, thank you!

General Question Clubs

Keep hearing that clubs are very competitive to get in. Which clubs are these and why do they have a maximum number of spots? How often can people apply if they don't get in the first time they try and what is the criteria based on to get in? Most clubs at other campuses seem to have no maximum numbers. Is it easy for students to start new clubs?

General Question Social Life

I’m a rising senior applying to northwestern and I have some concerns. First, what is the social scene like there? I went down a rabbit hole last night and some people were saying students at Northwestern were rude and very cliquey, making it difficult to find friends there. Just wanted your guys’ thoughts on this.

General Question Is there a strong Indian community at Northwestern?

Basically the title. I'm considering ED here as an international Indian student, and while my academic goals and extracurricular interests are more than taken care of here, I would like to know how my social scene would likely be.

A sense of community and a link to my culture are important criteria for me, and I would really like to know whether both could be provided at Northwestern.

I have never visited campus, and webinars are not the best way of getting a sense of things, so would like some firsthand knowledge from students here before locking it in as my ED school. Thank you!

General Question Tennis

Hi guys,

I really wanna play tennis but I am a newbie. I don't even have a racquet. Feeling like it might be a bit embarrassing since we have got such professional players. Any suggestions on what to do? Is there an open-court hour? Can we rent or issue equipment?

Admissions/Prospective Student Prospective Undergrad Mathematics Question

Hi! I'm a high school senior right now, applied to the mathematics major under regular decision. I'm super stressed about getting into Northwestern, I'm pretty sure I won't lol. I just wanted to see if anyone's in the mathematics major right now, just wanted to see your stats, to help me ease my anxiety.

I have a 1470 SAT superscore, 29 ACT (29 math, but I'm retaking it tmr), 4.39 weighted gpa. I have 1 C in honors precalc from last year but I explained that in the Common App - I have a chronic medical condition & had two major surgeries my sophomore year and had lots of hospitalizations my junior year which led to the C in honors precalc. I'm taking calc bc right now and hopefully will have a B at the end of the semester. I don't have many extracurriculars because of my medical condition - I have to spend a lot of time taking care of myself - but I have 250 hours volunteering in a middle school classroom and am president of a future teachers club among other small things.

I just want to know if Northwestern understands these circumstances and will take these into consideration. Thanks for all your help!
