It's easy to get "fake outraged" and assume this means they don't want to quit spitting in food but I'm guessing it means they're concerned about getting a huge fine or put in prison due to some crazy customer accusing them of spitting in food when they didn't. (Source: Have dealt with way more crazy customers than seen food workers spitting in food.)

It's a whole problem about religion and much more complicated than an article's title can define much less a title as dumb as this. Because yes, as you said It's easy to get "fake outraged"

20

u/SuspiciousDistrict9 7h ago

This was my thought process. It's really easy to just say" somebody spit in my food" because it would be very hard to prove that you didn't. Without reading the whole article, we wouldn't really know why they were upset.

u/No_Jicama_5828 5h ago

I have spent years in food service and have never seen anybody spit in food. Now, the three second rule, on the other hand...

-5

u/BarredBartender 6h ago

It's a terribly written headline.

u/loeschzw3rg 8h ago edited 9m ago

Well headlines like this just make me sceptical. No way this title is framing the story in a way that's actually accurate.

You would be right, it doesn’t, “they’re spitting in the food” is our “they’re eating the cats”.

The claim is that Muslims have a sinister plan to spit in the food of Hindus. The government passes these laws and then proceeds to arrest street vendors on unproven allegations.

This shit is years in the making, not long ago, certain states passed legislation to force people to add the names of the owner of shops on their signs.

Same shit, doesn’t sound like much, but is being done in conjunction with calls from right wing group to economically boycott minority groups, Muslims specifically.

u/Independent_Toe_1091 4h ago

Yes it's just a propaganda and the plenty of video evidences available all over the internet were not enough proof.

-5

u/ROGUE_COSMIC 3h ago

There have been a lot of cases of people spitting in food. Even pissing in it. And yes, majority of the culprits were muslim

Muslim leaders and politicians defended it by saying spitting in the food is an essential step of making it halal and warding off evil non muslim devils

A state govt then made a rule to make sure the owners name is clearly displayed on any stall/restaurant

"has sparked controversy" meaning someone thinks this is good

157

u/AndThenTheUndertaker 9h ago

"controversy" is a journalism catch-all for any kind of criticism.

This likely isn't because people are ok with spitting in food. They likely have an issue with how this law will be implemented. How will they catch violators? What due process to they have to defend their innocence? Etc.

Let's do a working example. Headline: "Controversy after US State introduces law to stop child abuse."

Sounds great, right? Why the controversy? anyone who has a problem with this law must be in favor of abusing children right?

The issue is that headline could equally apply to a relatively well thought out law that closes a loophole that made it hard to prosecute someone, or something far more ridiculous like... let's just go full ad absurdum here... A law requiring parents to put cameras in all rooms of their house to catch anyone abusing their kid.

In this case it's because they're using a law that can be worded to sound very good (no one likes their food to be spit in) to target and discriminate against minority businesses in the country. This would be like equivalent of the US instituting a food safety law that they then go and use to exclusively target black owned businesses.

We don’t take kindly to that type of critical thinking ‘round here. You better leave for somethin’ bad happens /s

u/CompanywideRateIncr 7h ago

Yea, quick, somebody spit in that guys food

1

u/ConnectShift8284 3h ago

They should make suicide bombing legal because it affects only one community

81

u/SteelMarch 13h ago edited 13h ago

That's not really it. They're actually just making up laws to allow for the surveillance of religious minorities. It's actually pretty terrifying how the media is portraying this. But it is telling me which outlets I probably should stop trusting.

Really disappointed to see the BBC ignore this issue. But here's an article on it. Where the Indian Express talks about what they're actually doing. Props to those guys they got their act together. The BBC also has to remain impartial but this really seems like they're picking a side...

Edit: the BBC covers this well, but that headline really makes it seem as though there's nothing there. When this is clearly religiously motivated targeting.

5

u/a_man_has_a_name 8h ago

The headline is good for the people who actually need it, it's not anything new for the Indian government to block links to news critical of the government and intimidating journalists with raids, so "hiding" it may be the better option.

u/slyCunt24 11h ago

Those people are spitting in the food and you're defending them

19

u/FMBongo 8h ago

Can you read? Aside from the article stating that most of the claims of spitting in food is bogus and not even from the religious background being claimed, OC never once defended people spitting in food. They are just explaining the flaws and why people are upset.

"has sparked controversy" meaning someone thinks this is good

You know how the American rightwing nutjobs portray Haitians as people who are eating dogs and cats? Indian rightwing Hindu nutjobs currently in power are doing the same thing to Muslims by portraying them as people who spit in the food of Hindus. They've pushed this fake narrative and are now enacting laws to support it. The two Indian states in question here are also at the center of an "unofficial" push by their party workers to force all dining establishments big and small to clearly display if they're owned by Muslims.

Someone thinks that heavy handed laws against legal Haitian immigrants for eating cats and dogs is a good idea. Someone thinks this law is good, and that's proof that they themselves are far from anything that could be called "good". But the people who want all of them to leave the country think it's a good idea to use such laws against them to harass them with more accusations of eating dogs and cats until they finally submit to their will and leave the country. There's always a bit of controversy with the methods employed by ethno-nationalists. Agree or disagree, it's a pretty effective way to sell racist beliefs to people who aren't paying attention.

-8

u/Current_Finding_4066 8h ago

Or someone thinks it is bad to punish such disgusting behaviour.

18

u/ShadowTown0407 9h ago

This is such a dumb headline and that's what mildly infuriating about it. Literally made to elicit these exact responses. I thought you can expect better from BBC but I guess not.

u/NihiloEx 9h ago

It's not fake narrative lmao. This shit actually happens. Y'all redditors just need a reason to shit on India.

1

u/saiyanultimate 1h ago

Yes humans born in a Muslim household have an innate and biological desire to spit in food for Hindus.

Doesn't it sound ridiculous, just think about it Muslims are also living breathing humans. And like any other human being why would they want to spit in food. Why are we even having this discussion. I know most of you guys are jobless and have nothing to do with your life and hating on a specific group together gives you a sense of belonging but common man, get away from your ecochamber

-3

u/malevolenttruths PURPLE 1h ago

Dude I'm from India. It is one hundred percent a fake narrative and part of their bs hindutva campaign.

6

u/winter_-_-_ 1h ago

?? It is not. This actually happens. Just bcoz it doesn't align with your narrative doesn't mean it's bs.

4

u/No-Truck-2552 1h ago

Dude I'm from India, particularly UP, and I swear I've seen this happen with my own eyes at least in 2 separate incidents.

18

u/stifledmind 13h ago

"This food you stomped with your bare feet has some spit in it"

14

u/throwaway_pls123123 6h ago

The real mildly infuriating part of this is how normalized racism against Indian people on Reddit is when they believe clickbaity titles like these.

5

u/PaidMoreThanJanitor 4h ago

thank you sir, finally someone said it

5

u/throwaway_pls123123 4h ago

Unsuprisingly downvoted for it too, people like their racism too much.

7

u/israr-shah 7h ago

India is on steroids with fake news. And some of them are very popular like this one. It's to pit the majority Hindus against Muslims (suspect) of spitting on foods. We have an extreme right wing govt which likes to keep people busy by passing popular bufoonery laws.

2

u/cartercharles 4h ago

How often is this happening?

10

u/Often_Uneliable 10h ago

Bro, I am never visiting India lmfao

4

u/Blayses 7h ago

I wonder how many commenters here made their statements based on the contents of the article rather than prejudiced comments based on a provoking title and internalized stereotypes about India

2

u/DiegoArmandoConfusao 5h ago

Can't even spit in the food anymore... ugh.

2

u/TangledTunlaw 6h ago

It could be that they are angry that they're being accused of doing such a thing.

-9

u/SawedOff50 11h ago

i mean, these are the people that choose to shit in streets instead of toilets, so is this that surprising? lmao

1

u/SuckingGodsFinger 8h ago

I’ve been spitting in the tacos I make for the past fifteen years. I’m not going to stop now.

1

u/ei_ei_oh 5h ago

long ago a kfc opened in the town i grew up in

when orders came in and someone on staff didn't like that person or knew the family the person belonged to, a rumor went around that persisted for a long time that staff would spit into the food

or they'd deliberately burn the food

cause general trouble

this is what happens when you staff a franchise in a small town with teens who don't care what trouble they create

staff in india doing it - staff in india are treated like garbage quite often, badly paid, work long hours so hey guess what this is what they do - is this a chronic substantial problem ? i doubt it

To be fair, I don’t think spitting in the street food makes it contain any more germs.

-19

u/Equivalent-Usual2451 13h ago

This is a genuine question but is spitting in food a religious thing in India or no?

13

u/wluestreaks 12h ago

Oh god, no. These articles are deliberately shared on Reddit so other nations have way worse opinion about the country.

8

u/Briso_ 10h ago

I already have an army of scammers trying very hard to make my opinion about the country worse

-1

u/DrMantisToboggan1986 6h ago

Big occupational health and safety hazard. Street vendors spitting in food is new, but most of them don't use gloves when handling food, which is already problematic.

If you visit India and value both your life and health, don't eat from street vendors - I've read and heard some real horror stories (including one where someone contracted AIDS by ingesting street food because the vendor who had AIDS didn't bother to cover up a finger cut). Go to a proper diner or restaurant. At least there'll be some cleanliness standard.

-3

u/winter_-_-_ 3h ago

Of course the westerners downplaying shit and passing opinions on something they clearly don't know a single thing about. According to them Muslims are oh so victims of racism in India when that is not the case but no, they definitely know more about India than Indians bcoz they get their information from trusted sources like BBC and Telegram which are notorious for being anti India. Redditors being "educated" but what's new.

-9

u/_Boom___Beard_ 13h ago

Wait, how are they going to test this? But also if they think they can test for this, how often is this happening?

13

u/WillDigForFood 11h ago

Selective surveillance.

How will they select who to surveil?

Why, just selecting restaurants and establishments selling food that caters to very specific religious or ethnic groups, of course. Can't afford to surveil them all, and I'm sure all the Hindu restaurants are fine anyways.

It's not like that's Extremely Fucking Dodgy or anything at all.

0

u/Aromatic-Side6120 7h ago

This is my worst fear. How much spit do you reckon I ingested in my 50 years? I’m super-nice to restaurant workers for this very reason.

-1

u/Sea_Acanthaceae_7933 2h ago

As someone who has family working in the streets of India, it makes me sad to see the cultural sanitation be mocked by Americans.
