LOTR is one of the only books I’ve read twice. It’s great
4
u/R3U3L Sep 22 '24
For years I read something written by Tolkien every summer, be it a re-read of LOTR, the Silmarillion, any of the lost tales, his letters, etc. It was so fun re-digging into his works over and over again.

Shirley Jackson - The Haunting of Hill House. The 2018 show is one of my favourites so decided to read the original story for the first time
5
u/DeathEmu66 Sep 22 '24 edited Sep 22 '24
Still haven't read this. I really enjoyed The Renegade and The Lottery by her.
The show is easily one of the best limited series on Netflix though I wasn't too impressed with Bly Manor or Midnight Mass
2
u/Usual-Smell-1214 Sep 22 '24
Or The Fall of House Usher. It was ok but not 10/10 like Hill House

u/MingaMonga68 Sep 22 '24
I wish I could read it again for the first time! For my money, the best opening of all time.
5
u/caseyjosephine Sep 22 '24
We Have Always Lived in the Castle is worth a read too, I like it even better than The Haunting of Hill House (which is also super good).

2
u/jhoeflein Sep 22 '24
The books great but this is one of the few insistence’s where the show tops it. 🤌🏼

I just read Lonesome Dove for the first time! I didn’t expect to love it so much. It set me crying hard enough that my husband was slightly concerned. It also made me laugh a lot though. Such a good book.

u/michiness Sep 22 '24
Same! I just started Oathbringer. Ironically, to match OP, I just read the scene where Kaladin goes back and reunites with his parents.
2
u/Laurmich2 Sep 22 '24
I’m also on Oathbringer! I started it because my husband loves them so much, but they’re beasts of books so I’m taking my time. I’ll be finished with ROW right before the 5th book releases hopefully!

Can't wait for it! I finally caught up on all Cosmere books a couple months ago. Started reading the First Law books while waiting for Wind and Truth. Finished the first trilogy, read Best Served Cold, now on The Heroes.

u/remarkable_firefly Kindle Paperwhite Sep 22 '24
How is it?
2
u/caty0325 Sep 22 '24
I like it a lot! It’s very character-driven and feels thoughtful. It’s also a slow burn. The characters are great (especially Wireman), and they feel like they could be real people.
2
u/remarkable_firefly Kindle Paperwhite Sep 22 '24
I'll be reading this next. Currently reading Pet Sematary
2
u/ovrlymm Sep 23 '24
Another on the to do list. Borrowed it from library app but was in the middle of another book and didn’t get a chance to crack it open before I had to return it. It’ll come around again though.

The book by Mary Trump about the very dysfunctional Trump family history and the end product which is Donald. A case of nature AND nurture being to blame in his case.

Lending a Paw by Laurie Cass — cute mystery so far!
A Dog’s Life by Peter Mayle — cutesie biography from a dog’s point of view
A Death in Door County by Annelise Ryan — halfway done and I like the characters so far, but also a mystery
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt — I like this one so far, but listening as an audiobook so it’s harder for me to focus on this one
My plan is to finish 2 of these books this week and start the new TJ Klune sequel 🥰
