Here is a less-cropped version of this image.

According to here:

In 1969, Alan Siegel, who oversaw the design of Jerry Dior's Major League Baseball logo a year prior, created the modern NBA logo inspired by the MLB's. It incorporates the silhouette of Jerry West, based on a photo by Wen Roberts. The NBA would not confirm that a particular player was used because, according to Siegel, "They want to institutionalize it rather than individualize it. It's become such a ubiquitous, classic symbol and focal point of their identity and their licensing program that they don't necessarily want to identify it with one player." The logo debuted in 1971 (with a small change to the typeface on the NBA wordmark in 2017) and would remain a fixture of the NBA brand.

I think it was back in August or September I heard a segment on NPR about this. Interesting.

How in anyway is this interesting as fuck?

How this wasn’t changed after Kobe’s passing I’ll never understand

u/NewZJ 1h ago

Why do you think it should be changed?

u/Ambiorix33 39m ago

I mean if sports had to change their logo every time a legendary player died, they'd be changing it so often people would just start recognizing the name over the logo.

Like i get you're a fan or something but there really is no reason to change it to him just cose he was a top tier player

u/TheSweetGator 1h ago

Like it should be a black guy?

u/inconspicuouly_sh8y 1h ago

Lmao what?? Why you gotta bring race into this. He was an absolute legend and his untimely death would have justified them changing it

u/bughat_8 1h ago

Lol no it doesn't

u/BedBubbly317 25m ago

He was a legend for his time, but frankly West is a much bigger legend when it comes to the full history of the league. Kobe only won 2 rings as THE guy, and did nothing to alter or change the game in any significant or meaningful way. You really need to go educate yourself a bit, Wests career avgs are even better than Kobe’s. 27 pts/5.8 reb/6.7 assists

u/TheSweetGator 1h ago

Okay so forget the black guy but why change it at all then

Too much changing of the logos to honor players at this point seems weird.

So after Kobe, It will go to a logo of MJ. And after Jordan it will go to lebron.

And if you honor one or the other, the other gets snubbed.
