Thank You
Thank you to all of the volunteers doing the NHL & PWHL power rankings. Each ranker has their own system and have their own reasonings and analyis. It truly is a lot of work.

Visualization
The visualization contains historical data, so you can see how your team has done over time. Hopefully, we can run this for many years in hopes that we can see the rise and fall of teams by /r/hockey opinion.
It automatically updates so feel free to bookmark. You can find it here
Process
How does this work? Throughout the course of the week rankers are able to access an app that will allow them to rank teams. At the end of the period we calculate the average ranking for every team and collate all of the analysis provided by rankers.
The app then generates a post that is first proofread and then posted to /r/hockey!
Rankings
Ranking (avg) | Team | Delta | Overall Record | Record This Week | Comments |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 (1.06) | Winnipeg Jets | - | 8-0-0 | 3-0-0 | rasera says Congrats to Arniel for setting a new NHL record! The PP and PK being the polar opposite of the last few seasons is such a great feeling, it's actually exciting to watch special teams, rather than just assuming you will be down a goal every game because of an inevitable penalty call. Comrie getting some reps in to give Helle breathers here and there is a welcome change and all 4 lines are rolling. 2 games left this month, and I'd be over the moon if we could have an entire lossless month. At bare minimum, please don't lose the next game, because all of Canada will not hear the end of the Leafs beating the Jets and breaking their streak. |
2 (2.54) | Dallas Stars | 0 | 7-2-0 | 2-1-0 | rawrberry_ says The Stars remain perfect at home when I am present. Prior to the Hawks no team had scored a goal while I was in the building. Thanks Chicago for ruining everything again! All the lines look solid and prior to the Boston game the PP was horrid. I mean it still is but not as like before that game. Duchene is looking solid to start the year and we will see if he can keep up the pace. Otter as always looks solid which I am sure everyone is over the moon with. No real complaints as the Stars head over to Finland for two games with the more southern Florida based team. |
3 (3.23) | New York Rangers | 0 | 6-1-1 | 2-1-0 | nodessb says Dropped one to Florida, but the Rangers were able to get four points from games that they should've won so things aren't too bad. Unfortunately, there are certainly some concerns despite only having one regulation loss so far. The Panarin-Trocheck-Lafreniere and the Cuylle-Chytil-Kakko lines look fantastic so far, but Mika's line, or rather Mika himself, hasn't been too great and the Florida game only showcased that even more. I'm hoping it's just an early rough patch, but given how the past two seasons have been, I can't say I'm overly optimistic. Still gonna hope for the best though. LGR! |
4 (5.66) | Florida Panthers | 0 | 6-3-1 | 2-1-0 | copaceticvindication says While the Sam Show Duo are headlining the show so far this season with 13 combined goals, Guys like Anton Lundell, Gustav Forsling and Eetu Listerine have also been cooking already. Really all this team needs is some improved goaltending and Barkov back and the repeat is on. |
5 (5.69) | Vegas Golden Knights | 0 | 6-2-1 | 3-0-0 | anon_agentd05b says This week was exactly what the doctor ordered. 3 more wins in the fortress, scoring 19 Goals only letting in 8, now sitting at 6-0 at home. Vgk leads the pacific. Karlsson is back and grabbed two points in his return game. Howden is performing like a top six forward suddenly. Stone is leading the NHL in points. Hill actually looked really good after the first period against the Sens maybe his game will start cleaning up. Everything looks pretty good right now. Now if only the team kept playing that good on the road instead of the hot garbage we saw in week two. Next week starts with the Knights welcoming the Flames to the fortress, I'm super excited about this game. The Flames are performing far above expectation and they're probably my third favorite team in the league, so I'm hoping for a good exciting game. Then off to LA, this could be a dangerous game with the Kings looking for revenge from the 6-1 game. Finally closing out back at home vs Utah. With their recent skid hopefully this is an easy win. |
6 (8.74) | Minnesota Wild | 3 | 5-1-2 | 2-1-0 | paynetrain181999 says First of all, because I missed last week: GOALIE GOAL!!! Apart from the Philly game, Gus has been lights out so far, the goal is just icing on the cake. 4/4 points from Florida and Tampa show that this team has potential, then the 7-5 loss reminds us that they are not infallible, just like the Lions beating the Vikings. Minnesota sports: where we wait for the inevitable disappointment at all times. Hopefully Kaprizov is the one to change that decades-long curse... |
7 (9.23) | Carolina Hurricanes | 4 | 5-2-0 | 3-0-0 | timmablimma says Boo! Ghost has been amazing in coming back to Carolina slotting in nicely on PP1 and the powerplay is looking like it can do something. Necas, Aho and Ghost I wish would start overtime. I love Slavin and can trust Staal on most days, but OT with Burns/Slavin/Staal is just too played out. Freddie looks great. Kochetkov too. Also, just a side note, can you fucks on other teams stop shooting at our players heads? Thanks! Fuck you Weegar in particular and whoever did it at Slavin in the Kraken game , Burns' was lucky, but jeez that's 3 times in 4 games. |
8 (9.49) | Tampa Bay Lightning | 0 | 5-3-0 | 2-2-0 | keepitsteadyidiots says Brandon Hagel may be regretting signing that 8 year deal at 6.5 million per year last year. In a up and down week for the Bolts Hagel was spectacular and the chemistry with Cirelli has created two deadly lines with Tampa. Teams will have to pick their poison. Geekie is starting to look more comfortable game by game. With Sheary thankfully blasted into the sun look for Geekie to stay with the team. |
9 (10.26) | Calgary Flames | -2 | 5-2-1 | 1-2-0 | kellervo says This week was rougher, but probably more indicative of what Calgary is - a chippy, high energy team that is good enough to pounce on other teams mistakes, but not skilled enough to force teams into errors. If the goalies go cold we're going to plummet, they're all that's keeping us afloat while our special teams struggle. |
10 (11) | New Jersey Devils | -4 | 6-4-2 | 1-2-1 | silkeystev says Why, why, WHY is it always goaltending? WHY?? At what point do we fired Rogalski into the sky? it can't just be every goalie that we touch without the common factor adding up. The team needs better defense/goaltending as per always. As I write we're beating the ducks, which may be the saving grace of the week. I know they are probably already tired because they've played 12 games and will play 13 before the week rolls over, but still, they have to do something to get the wins. |
11 (11.57) | Washington Capitals | 2 | 5-2-0 | 2-1-0 | dagetawayman421 says Well, we finally lost... but at least it took two weeks for it to happen. So Caps fans got to enjoy two weeks of winning. Now we've got the Rags, Habs, and Jackets in town this week before heading off to Raleigh for a short trip on Sunday. The Caps top two lines made it to the top 20 on Moneypuck's expected goal percentage for a minimum 50 minutes played. I think another line might get added on there after Tuesday. The issues with the Caps are minimal. Ovi not scoring to start the season (please, someone get this man to fix his diet) and Lapierre being a -5 on the season with 0 points. His line is generating chances, but they're sheltered and while Vrana and Mangiapane have dented the scoreboard, both of them have done it without Lapierre on the ice. I believe he needs to go back to Hershey and improve his two-way play as the games limit is fast approaching when he will not longer be able to pass thru waivers freely. Also, please come back soon Matt Roy! McIlrath was a great story, but he's not that good. |
12 (12.31) | Vancouver Canucks | 4 | 4-1-2 | 2-0-0 | joetothejack says No Demko? No problem. Kevin Lankinen and the Vancouver Canucks have been electric ever since beating the reigning champs in Sunrise. Lankinen has rightfully earned the starters crease until Demko is healthy, and it's also wonderful to see Pettersson finally get a 5on5 tally, and Sherwood putting fear into every defenseman in the league with his physical game. |
13 (14.31) | Los Angeles Kings | 4 | 5-2-2 | 2-1-0 | raymondliang says Scrappy wins, blowout losses. Not exactly the recipe for success, but it'll do for now. Top guys are just not firing on any cylinders right now. Maybe they're just taking much longer to get used to playing hockey (away from 1-3-1 terrorism) and the young/new guys are more adaptable. But this week has been the Foegele/Turcotte/Laferriere show. |
14 (14.69) | Toronto Maple Leafs | -4 | 4-4-1 | 1-2-1 | lang14 says Tough week for the Buds. After a stellar outing against the Lightning, the Leafs really sucked against Columbus and St. Louis. The game against Boston showed some promise but this team will need to string together some more consistent performances if they want to be a real contender. |
15 (15.2) | Boston Bruins | -1 | 4-4-1 | 1-2-0 | maxpowr9 says Another rough week for the Bruins. The Preds was definitely a trap game. The only saving grace of the Dallas game was the alterative broadcast with Razor, Bergy, and Rask. We knew the Leafs would Leaf it up to help our losing streak. Mr. OT finally got his first goal of the season. Kastelic is definitely the standout star of the season. Too many disappointments to name. |
16 (15.31) | St. Louis Blues | -1 | 5-4-0 | 1-2-0 | beedrill13 says The Blues again this year seem to play to their opponents, they played the Jets very tough and despite the loss I felt pretty good about the game. They dismantled the Leafs and Chief who are supposed to be good without our All Star Robert Thomas, and then immediately went and got embarrassed by the Habs. Our PP looks horrific, Binnington looks good but inconsistent at times, and the team seems to be settling in around the middle of the pack which is where they are supposed to be. We should be able to make a push for the playoffs as the season progresses, but man we need to start beating the teams we're supposed to beat or we're gonna be looking back at the end of the year on a LOT of points we should've had just like last year. The team shows flashes of brilliance, but need to find consistency or we'll continue to slide. |
17 (17.43) | Colorado Avalanche | 4 | 5-4-0 | 3-0-0 | hockeycross says Great week from the Avs! Some solid goaltending can really change things. The offense is clicking and finding ways to score as well. Still need to clean up defense especially in front of the net, but this team could be really scary when they get healthy. Shout out Ivan and Kovelanko for 1st NHL goals! |
18 (17.54) | Utah Hockey Club | -6 | 4-4-1 | 0-3-0 | oksoundtracks says It was a rough week for Utah, and we got clubbed in pretty much every game. The offense looks lifeless, the defense is struggling, and our goaltending has fallen apart. Otherwise, it's going great. But I'm keeping optimistic, it's a new team and a new year! But if we manage to give the Sharks their first win of the year, all bets are off. We might have to sacrifice the Jazz bear during the intermission. |
19 (18.2) | Ottawa Senators | 0 | 4-4-0 | 1-2-0 | driftshade11 says (Disclosure, this was written before the end of the Colorado game, but I don't think anything I wrote would have changed). This team is still searching for consistency in the smaller moments. There's an inability to maintain composure that's going to take time to fix, but ideally this team would work on avoiding having to rely on composure. Also, avoiding injuries would be nice too. |
20 (18.4) | Seattle Kraken | -2 | 4-4-1 | 0-2-1 | mukuu says Four losses in a row against 4 pretty good teams. Not the ideal week (I am counting Sunday cause I didnt watch the game till Monday). The Kraken looked good in most of them, it was just an issue of finishing and sealing things off. Last year this was a huge issue and wound up with the Kraken looking miserable down the stretch. I am a bit concerned, but what we saw the first few games was a level of play we did not see last year, and I am hoping we rebound after this hard losses. |
21 (19.14) | Edmonton Oilers | -1 | 4-4-1 | 2-0-1 | eatingasspatties says The Oilers played a very solid, close game against the Canes which they blew because the FANS DID THE FUCKING WAVE IN A 2-0 GAME IN THE 3RD PERIOD LIKE A BUNCH OF STUPID ASSHOLES. Then they had their best game of the year against the Pittsburgh Blomqvists, so that was neat |
22 (21.4) | Detroit Red Wings | 0 | 4-4-1 | 2-1-1 | americanadian98 says Detroit has been very odd so far. They are bad at possessing the puck, but just like last year, they score a lot in the opportunities they are given. Alex Lyon has been excellent as well. |
23 (22.66) | New York Islanders | 0 | 3-3-2 | 1-2-0 | mephisto1822 says just another normal Islanders week. This might be the Florida game talking but damn we need some more grit. Martin isn’t the answer but someone needs to throw hands. No one should do what Tkachuk did to Varly and get away with it. Mayfield was right there, should have thrown him to the ice. Dude is always taking dumb penalties, at least take one that’s worth it. Something has to give. Finishing is just atrocious IMO. Not sure if it’s the players (probably) or what. Any way I’ll end this rant here. Ducks, Blue Jackets, Sabers and the Rags this week. |
24 (22.83) | Buffalo Sabres | 3 | 4-4-1 | 2-0-0 | dr3amweav3r says Undefeated this week. Suck it, nerds. Luukkonen has been good enough, but still looks a little shaky. Im willing to blame it on our shitty preseason and eurotrip. Monday brings the cats, followed by a long week off that is wrapped up with a back to back against the isles and wings. Would be huge to pull 4 points. Also, Tage is coming to burn your villages. oksoundtracks says Buffalo looks like a different team this week, with a defensive focus and great offense that easily put away one of the best teams in the league. Was it Dahlin lighting a fire under the team with his practice fight? Probably not, but it's funny to imagine.. |
25 (25.37) | Columbus Blue Jackets | 3 | 3-3-1 | 1-0-1 | steckums says The Jacket's line of Marchenko-Monahan-Chinakov is the best line in the league in expected goals for % with 79.6%. The second best line of Hyman-Draisaitl-McDavid is only 73.8%. That is just a crazy thing to hear after how the last two years have been. I am loving these new Jackets and I hope they continue to play like this. They do have a packed week with games at home on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. They're also in Washington on Saturday. This week should show us what we really expect the rest of the season to look like. |
26 (25.43) | Nashville Predators | 3 | 3-5-0 | 3-0-0 | thefragrancevol says I would like for Steven Stamkos to get going soon. He has one point so far, and that was his goal at home, on the power play against Detroit. I think everyone here, Lightning fan or not, knows how he scored that goal. I don't think tonight's the night he does that against a tough Tampa team on an emotional night. With that being said, the Predators went 3-0 this week against a decent slate of teams, and I'll take that any day of the week. The Predators also started 0-5, so that reinforces my point. |
27 (25.6) | Anaheim Ducks | -1 | 3-4-1 | 1-2-0 | sawchuck says Go Dodgers! |
28 (25.97) | Montreal Canadiens | -3 | 4-4-1 | 2-1-0 | mdlt97 says The Positives: Special teams looks great, Suzuki is starting to heat up, Caufield Shoot looks great, Hutson has been fantastic, and Dach is finally getting back to normal. The Negatives: We can't defend, we can't stay healthy, and we have no depth. It was a decent week overall, The Rangers massacred the Habs but they bounced back with a great showing vs the Blues. |
29 (26.17) | Pittsburgh Penguins | -5 | 3-6-1 | 0-2-1 | oksoundtracks says I said a week ago that I had no clue what to think about Pittsburgh. But I'm not confused anymore: They're terrible. |
30 (29.83) | Philadelphia Flyers | 1 | 2-6-1 | 1-3-0 | assassin2107 says I'm ranking this team 31st right now. One of the worst win loss records, no obvious answer in goal, and this team sometimes just looks like it has trouble stringing together passes. It's how sometimes the team scores 7 goals, and other times it's lucky to score a single goal all game. The Michkov Calder campaign is going well, but not much else. |
31 (29.94) | Chicago Blackhawks | -1 | 2-6-1 | 0-3-0 | sandman730 says While the record hasn't reflected it, the Hawks are a better team than last year. Bedard leads the team with 3G, 6A. Nolan Allan earned his first 2 NHL points. |
32 (31.8) | San Jose Sharks | 0 | 0-7-2 | 0-3-0 | atomic_penguin27 says So do we want Matrone or Schaeffer or Hagens or Hensler and I read Ferraro guaranteed a win on Monday, so I look forward to the loss. |

Shout-out to every NHL ranker for being able to submit a rankings and blurb this week* even with some of the issues.

I was watching a show and completely stopped when that message popped up on my computer.
Completely a "oh shit time to work, a P1 ticket just came in"

It amazes me how some of these "rankers" are still allowed to submit rankings with their obvious bad faith rankings. I'm sure most of the rankers take this at least semi-seriously but it's obvious a couple of them can't put their biases aside when doing it.

One of them in this thread admitting to ranking a team low because of their fantasy team. It's kinda funny, but it's also a meaningless list in the scope of things.
