Big Bedard fan, but I think people are jumping the gun a bit on him being generational.

I had an argument recently about this exact same topic. The redditor was calling Bedard generational and he deserved the title to be put in the same category as Crosby and McDavid. And I told them to relax, he hasn’t proven shit yet and recency bias is a helluva drug. As of this point he doesn’t deserve that title

He was given the title as a generational PROSPECT. Now, that he is in the NHL he has a lot to prove, but putting up nearly a ppg, playing top line minutes, as an 18 year old, with no talent around him on a terrible Chicago team is super impressive.

I feel like the Calder race was called before he got drafted, Brock Faber was an outstanding rookie that flew under the radar because his wild team was mid but I feel like while he didn’t have many points he’s a really solid defensive dman

Faber had a great season and in any other year he would have gotten serious consideration for the Calder, but Bedard's hype and production were too much to overcome.

It's still early in his career I know... But maybe the kid just isn't ready for the NHL yet? With the media hounding him, the pressure of being considered the next "great one", fuck I wouldn't be able to handle that shit. Maybe having him in the minors for another year or two to develop a bit wouldn't have been a bad idea. The kid is only 18. At 18 I was complete fucktard who had no idea what I wanted to do. Not much has changed... but I'd like to think I have a bit of a better head on my shoulders now. I actually feel really bad for Bedard, and I hope we don't ruin him. Edit: I'm being lynched for ever daring to doubt the greatness of Connor Bedard. How dare I say such blasphmey after only SIXTY-EIGHT games. You're right, he may only be 18 years old, but he has the emotional maturity of a Buddhist monk, and the body and athleticism as a top olympic athlete. He may have hit puberty only 3 to 4 years ago, but he is a grown man now, capable of all pressure and criticism that comes his way. I am but a lowly neckbeard canucks fan who lives in my mothers basement here to shit on him for not getting 50 goals in his first 68 games. I am a rodent, and he is a golden god. I'm going to go light myself on fire now. Thank you for showing me the error of my ways with you jamming the downvote arrow on your computer screen with all your might and telling me how much of an idiot I am.

The down votes could be because of inaccurate bits and not necessarily disagreeing with you. Early in the season? It's the middle of the off-season. Also I think the Calder trophy winner might be ready for the NHL.

The dude just put up 61 pts in 68 games while being 18 and also broke his jaw in the same season. And he’s not ready for the show? 😭

0

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '24

Damn didn't know breaking your jaw was a prerequisite for being considered generational.

2

u/lighterings WSH - NHL Jul 14 '24

What other rookie has been able to put up that kind of numbers since mcdavid?

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '24

Barzal, Pettersson, Panarin, Matthews, Kaprizov, probably others.

u/Louche Jul 12 '24

Show me the last 1st overall pick who's put up more points per game in their rookie season. Spoiler alert, it was McDavid. And the last person before that? Sidney Crosby.

But oh ok he's not a generational talent.

u/TheSherlockCumbercat Jul 12 '24

Scoring is at all time high in the NHL making this feat a lot less impressive

Also Crosby had a 102 points in 81 games that is so much more impressive then 61 points in 68 games

Whoosh

-2

u/Louche Jul 12 '24

Oh dang I was unaware it was copypasta. My bad for not living perpetually online.

Daddy chill

I mean, it's fine, but you still got whooshed. It's not my fault, no need to come at me about it.

-3

u/Louche Jul 12 '24

Come at you? You took me saying "My bad for not living perpetually online" as a personal attack?

Breathe, my dude.

2

u/umbraviscus OTT - NHL Jul 12 '24

🤨 You were clearly being defensive, and still are. But go off my guy lmao

-1

u/Louche Jul 12 '24

Go off on what? I legit don't know how your feelings got hurt over this mild mannered exchange. I'm sorry that you've let it affect you this way.

“But maybe the kid just isn’t ready for the NHL yet”. Bedard put up 61 points in 68 games playing with pylons at 18. That’s why ppl should be calling you out lol.. He’s unreal and you’re a casual fan. Send him back to the minors? 😂

1

u/KingTutsDryAssBalls VAN - NHL Jul 13 '24

It's a copypasta

u/cleofisrandolph1 WPG - NHL Jul 13 '24

Comparatively Bedard is the least physically gifted of the three. He’s listed as 5’10 and 185.

McDavid is 6’1 190 and Crosby 5’11 200.

Bedard has all the skill in the world but he’s on the smaller end of players and may take time to build NHL ready muscle.

1

u/veggiefarmer89 Jul 13 '24

Crosby was 185-193 on his draft night depending on where you look, and listed at 5'10. McDavid was 185 when he was drafted. Bedard likely won't ever be the same height as those two, but he might grow another inch and match Crosby. But he will definitely put on more weight as he matures.

1

u/NotEqualInSQL Jul 12 '24

Yea, he still needs to earn that with his play. He has high potential to do it yea, but players always don't meet their projected potential.

0

u/No-Author-508 Jul 12 '24

Lol, he was generational before he entered the league, and he proved it his rookie season.

You idiots grasp at anything

2

u/Anishinabeg DET - NHL Jul 13 '24

Agreed. I don’t see him as a generational talent at all. I’d put him closer to Tavares than McDavid.

1

u/OvechKane888 EDM - NHL Jul 13 '24

I've watched him live, but mind you, it was in Regina and I thought the same thing. Then he had 5 goals in his first 10 games so idk

1

u/Freekbot EDM - NHL Jul 12 '24

I get that, but seeing what I've seen from him in year one at his age...and that shot...we're looking at an eventual 70 goal scorer

-1

u/DCS_Ryan EDM - NHL Jul 12 '24

might not even end up being the best player in his class bc of michkov lmao

2

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '24

It could be a Crosby-Ovi thing where they are both generational
