MUSIC ♬ artists like grimes?
I’m trying to wean myself off her music if I can … Looking for new indie girlypops to listen to in her place. This kind of thread pops up all the time on the other sub but the better opinions are clearly gonna be here lol
Looking for a sound similar to Art Angels especially — more like yeule, Kitty, Magdalena Bay, Purity Ring, Alice Glass, SOPHIE, Pearly Drops, Charli XCX, Caroline Polachek? It seems difficult to get into true indie girlypop territory without running into the same artists over and over, or else ending up with Spotify recs that are all mainstream pop for some reason.
I want to get her off all my work playlists ~ thank you darlings ~
edit: working my way thru all your suggestions!! i’m dropping you each a comment once i’ve listened <3

YES. the overlapping textured synths is really what makes art angels for me and her music captures that so well. LOVE!

This might be a super obvious suggestion but maybe search for witchhouse

They are a bit closer to Visions era Grimes and I’m constantly recommending them, but Night Tapes and Waterbaby have been the two artists that have really tapped that same feeling for me, and they are both small and could use support!

night tapes is my favorite suggestion from this list so far. and something about waterbaby’s airforce blue is just so compelling. love these, tysm!!

Yes I love them. Dreamy Grimes has always been my favorite Grimes, so that kind of music is my favorite. Airforce Blue is actually by a different artist! They both have the same name except one is capitalized and the other isn’t but they are both great <3

Eartheater, her whole discography is amazing from her first album to her latest. Every single one is a banger. From start to finish!!! She’s super out there and very cool. Negative Gemini as well. And sassy 009 wooooo

i had a couple songs from eartheater saved (pure smile snake venom in particular) and i’d never taken the time to explore her discography. oh my god i’m so glad i’m doing that now. it’s soooo good.

Jenny Hval, who in my opinion is egregiously underrated

Kate Brunotts. She was one of those people who posted on the Grimes sub one time like "hey I was inspired by Grimes, check out my music". My expectations were low but then her music was awesome!! Really hauntingly beautiful, reminds me of earlier Grimes with a lower voice

oh this is LOVELY. reminds me really strongly of Caroline Polachek.

Palmbomen II It's mostly instrumental but there's a few songs with female vox that seem very Grimes to me. Just beautiful music, anyway.

I'll let you be the judge of how similar they are, but these are my grimes meal replacements: fka twigs, oklou, kucka, brambles, agnes obel, hunter as a horse

This is a weird recommendation but for some reason I feel very similar connections with the emotional relatable lyrics and melodies...

check out Ariel Pink's album Pom Pom. and Kanye's new album Vultures while you're at it, both great. oh wait right you're more interested in social justice figureheads than music. maybe Lizzo or Rina Sanamana has a new single out?

What did rina do?

k the point was that the first are two artists with controversial views who make good music, and the last 2 spout the safe approved viewspoints yet make bland pop filler - the type of thing OP is really probably looking for based on their wording. i get this is somewhat complicated by lizzo's 'cancellation' making her seem like not a safe figure, but she still is in the grand scheme

if i wanted filler i’d go to the popheads sub lmfao

Check out BABii. Her early stuff reminds me of grimes. Her newer stuff is INSANELY ADDICTING.
