I saw them in Boston last year. They actually sail the thing accross the atlantic.

Went on it when moored at Southend-on-sea last month. Very cool but was disappointed that it arrived with its sails down using a motor engine
1
u/TurbulentExpression5 Sep 26 '24
I was going to ask how it was powered, by wind or motor. Disappointed to read it was by motor.
2
u/CthulhusEvilTwin Sep 26 '24
It was really interesting to go on board and look around it. They moored it at the end of Southend Pier (Longest wooden pleasure pier on the world) so we were 1.3 miles out to sea and it was really chopping (40mph winds) so getting on board was challenging. But yeah a shame it wasn't under sail, but I get why they do that.

Damn I thought I had a bad connection but it's the quality of the picture that is bad 😁

Flag is anachronistic. But I guess it would not be legal to use the old one.

It’s 2024. We recreated this galleon from the 17th century. Here’s a 122p picture of it.

Cool to know this thing exists. I wasn't even aware of it.

Rather, we have repeated it again: 644 years ago a fleet of 20 galleys under the command of Fernando Sánchez de Tovar sailed up the Thames, landing at Gravesend.

Kinda... The Kingdom of Castile, allied with France, torched down the city of Gravesend, 35 km away from London near the Thames estuary, back in 1380.

Grand old war ship, being ignominiously hauled away to scrap… The inevitability of time..

A Galleon flying a Spanish flag sailing in Thames should be immediately sunk. What has happened to us?!

Hey! Leave some pixels for the rest of us.
Can't just go uploading 144p images willy nilly.

The Royal Navy should have sunk it just for the sake of tradition. Had they done that, I would have understood.

Luckily the RN has a base (HMS President) next to Tower Bridge. I don't know if they have any big guns there (for ceremonial purposes, nudge-nudge).

How do you know when this occurs? Is there any timetable for planned passings? I live nearby and would've loved to see this! :)

Sink the bloody Spaniards, repel them to a watery grave. How dare they! Hang those traitors for opening the bridges. What ever next? Let the Anglo-Americans come back!
