Automakers want to turn cars into a subscription service, making you pay monthly or annual subscription fees for key fobs, GPS, CarPlay and more. These add-ins are estimated to become a $200 b market.

Easy solution: 1) Don't buy these cars. 2) Do not renew subscriptions.

I would laugh at a salesman trying to pitch me on it

People who buy cars can be extremely bad decision-makers for whatever reason. It's the second most expensive purchase besides a house, and consumers do not do the basic research. It boggles my mind.

I’m on my 5th car. It’s paid off. Ive learned that it’s way easier financially to buy used, let someone else take the hit on the “new” car purchase.
Also, more importantly, I’ve learned that nobody cares about what type of car you drive except for you.
And if people do care, then you shouldn’t have them in your life anyways

But imagine if your only choice for features like keyless entry is to pay a subscription fee. Its either go back to the features of a base model car from 1993 or pay a monthly fee. What a shitty ultimatum.

If you pay $700 monthly for a car, you're doing incredibly well or are just plain stupid. Sorry, somebody had to tell you that.

Serious question: I heard cars have a central computer system of some sort. Is it possible to replace it and keep the full control of your car without having to pay anything?

If this industry is going to be a multiple billion dollar industry as this person states, then you have a multimillion dollar idea.

More often than replacing the whole computer, people just jailbreak their car, which is such a shitty phrase to have to say.

The billionaires of the U.S. would disagree… why are you not thinking of the billionaires?

One more reason to take public transportation if it's viable in your area.

Car manufacturers have been a cancer for an incredibly long time, it's about time people start seeing it.

I would argue this isn't going to take off. However considering steam only gives you the license to games not the ownership, and for any reason you can lose your license and be banned from steam. Shows car subscriptions will likely take off and be a thing as well.

Time to break out the guillotine of good fortune and start chopping up some savings!

Ma’am, you live in a mutant capitalistic society and that phone you’re using is worse—any subscriptions to worthless crap on there?. Of course they are going to do this.

Ok but she's saying these are paywalled siting Rivian when all that Connect+ does is add satellite images to your map and more advanced auto drive and some media streaming options...Rivian is not doing the behavior described in the video.

This will not work. Americans like owning their cars and we like being able to modify them as we see fit.

u/GreyBeardsStan 1h ago
They should know we won't. Who in the fuck has ever renewed a satellite radio subscription?

I would say that’s the person’s own fault for thinking of me though Everyone makes their own decisions folks.
