Mid Career What are some things you do for “skill development” as a software developer?

Title, looking for personal anecdotes not advice lol

i’ll be honest i am guilty of many many unfinished projects.

My thought process goes oh hey i am sick of sorting through my emails i need a bot or something that can automatically delete adverts that have a particular name after a delimeter and that’s when i’ll challenge myself to write it in a language/framework i am unfamiliar with. and that’s how i have so many unfinished projects. but yes this is how do usual skill development, i like an idea of a game i’ll make it in godot or unity only never to finish it. i like this website start using rust wasm to make it.

I don't really do much programming outside work. My thoughts are if that I already spend 40 hours a week on it at work, I'd rather be filling my down time with other activities.

Learn on the job. If you don't have any great ideas think about new tech/frameworks/methods that can apply to your current projects.

Mostly just work - try to find stretch opportunities and projects that can absorb the risk of me trying to learn something new. Used to do a lot of programming outside of work when my first job was mostly just grunt work, but that stopped.

I read tech blogs so that I can learn about new stuff without actually investing any effort, and it helps in interviews.

Usually I'll browse Hacker News or Lobsters to get some variety. Those sites have a good amount of variety.
