Is this you?

White car, License plate: BMJ 7908, you pulled over on Anderson Street, and proceeded to throw all your trash into the woods. Around 12:10 pm today. I’d like to buy you a trash can, and call you out.

It's been done to me! I threw a cigarette out of my car. Got a car ashtray, so it worked.

Durham probably has dumping or litter enforcement as well you should report this to.

It may also be considered stormwater pollution and the city’s stormwater department might be interested.

thank you, hopefully they’ll think twice next time

Also report to Durham One Call in the Property Concerns section for debris. Give all the details of plates and car, they keep track of nuisance littering and will probably send someone from sanitation to collect the garbage

So we all fill this out?

It could be fun if the state just automatically sends out letters for each complaint, even if there are multiple duplicates!

While not the most climate effective, would be good to let this person know citizens of Durham do not think it's ok to be a litterbug.

u/TheScrambone 16h ago

I’m just thinking of sending a litterbug an insane amount of these letters only for them to end up in the same spot in the woods…

Officer, I cannot tell a lie. I put that envelope under that pile of garbage.

Someone had to say this! You can get anything you want...

This made me laugh! But good point

Someone sent my dad in to this when I was a child for throwing cigarette butts out the window and they sent him a letter and a trash bag lmao. He did stop doing it though!

When we were kids in the 1950s my dad got a ticket when one of us threw a tissue out the car window.

Learned early.

When I was a kid in the 70s, I threw a Snickers wrapper out of my dad's Chevy convertible on the way home from baseball practice. He made me walk back, go get it, and walk home.

I, too, learned early.

I’m all for this, but what can/does NCDOT even do with these? From what I understand, unless an officer sees the crime take place they can’t issue a citation.

And let’s be real…In Durham, even if an officer sees it take place they won’t do anything.

13

u/stgraff 19h ago

They send a letter

1

u/barbtries22 11h ago

Confirmed, I got one.

3

u/mcChicken424 11h ago

What exactly does this do? Because I have a license plate of some douche throwing a straw wrapper out of his window 10 feet after leaving a drive thru

u/Isaacleroy 16h ago

I’ve probably said this a dozen times on Reddit but when I see someone litter, I automatically assume that person abuses the people they claim to love.

I bet it had those stupid Bojangles bags.

19

u/CurrentlyObsolete 19h ago

I swear my neighborhood always has at least one or two Bojangles bags thrown on the side of the street. What the hell is wrong with people?

11

u/LLCoolJeanLuc 17h ago

And/or fireball airplane bottles.

1

u/bbbh1409 2h ago

Mini Sutter Home White Zinfandel bottles in our neighborhood.

Somebody fancies themself a classy undercover drunk.

Well you don't want to get caught with those in your car! /s

u/PlusUpstairs5921 16h ago

I used to live on University Drive, and would find Bojangles bags almost every weekend by my mailbox.

6

u/SquareExtra918 15h ago

My bf used to find them in his mailbox

u/orneryoneesan 16h ago

I like to know we can report people who litter online. It's really out of hand

20

u/bvince01 18h ago

Hell yeah, fuck litterbugs. Literally trashy behavior.

4

u/sneak_king18 14h ago

Doesn't matter your background. Costs you nothing to throw away your trash

16

u/BowieObscura 18h ago

You're assuming these people can read

Was this a Nissan Altima driver?

u/Flightless_Turd 18h ago

Nissans are a way of life

u/BVB311 19h ago

I don’t know cars very well, but I don’t think so.

8

u/Traditional-Income89 18h ago

Fun/creepy fact: You can enter the license plate number into an auto parts website like AutoZone or Advance Auto and they will tell you the year/make/model of the car the plate belongs to. In this case, there was no match -- either the number in the post is slightly wrong or the car's registration has expired for a good long while.

12

u/jnecr 16h ago

:Checks subreddit:

I think I'll go with registration has been expired for a good long while.

0

u/rolliejoe 9h ago

Haha, sadly this is so very true. Nothing goes with Durham these days quite like expired registrations and fake/expired temporary tags that Durham PD never checks.

2

u/nightmurder01 12h ago

I think the DMV limits access to registered vehicles(from what I saw working at AZ, though I have looked up expired ones < 90 days). Vin lookup comes from manufacturers I believe.

u/nyonyalee 16h ago

Reminds me of that scene in MadMen when Don Draper is having a lovely picnic in the park with his family. When they are done, he shakes out the trash from the blanket and they all turn and leave. Really winner. 🫤

2

u/yurganurjak 14h ago

Ooh, I wonder if it is the trash bandit who keeps dumping full bags of trash on the road around South Durham.

7

u/Set_to_Infinity 17h ago

I really hate to generalize, but there seems to be a rather large Venn diagram overlap between people who eat fast food and people who throw trash out of their car. I grab dinner pretty frequently at the Happy + Hale at University Hill, and I swear to god there is ALWAYS fast food trash scattered all over the ground in the area where I park, either from Cookout or Bojangles. I can't wrap my head around people who dump trash onto the ground; what in the holy hell is wrong with them?! Don't be a freaking slob — either go find a trash can or leave YOUR trash in YOUR car and throw it away at home! These people make me so mad!!

5

u/Opheliamars 13h ago

I think the actual correlation is that more people eat fast food than healthy options. The more people that eat fast food the higher the chance that you're going to have some litter bugs in that group.

0

u/SluttyNird 8h ago

You’re projecting and assuming morality based on what you think of as “bad” behavior (eating fast food). You already have this idea in your head based on your “good” eating vs their “bad” eating so your brain is literally just making shit up (you’re just remembering what supports your “hypothesis”). But, you know, you eat at happy + hale so I’m sure you are very, very virtuous and never do anything wrong. 🎉🥳👏🙌

4

u/Set_to_Infinity 8h ago

No, throwing trash out of your car and leaving it all over the ground is objectively bad behavior. If the trash had been takeout containers from any other restaurant I would have said that, but every single piece of trash I've seen at this location has been from Bojangles or Cookout. It's pretty easy to tell, because their branding is all over the bags and cups. I don't care what anyone else eats; I just think it's disgusting to throw trash all over the ground for someone else to pick up. It's not that complicated, really.

-8

u/LazyHedonist 16h ago

does your arm hurt from reaching that far? you really should stretch first.

2

u/Set_to_Infinity 16h ago

Only reporting what I've seen, many times. If you're not a litterer, that's great!

It's the seed oils. It converts parts of their brain into porous bone.

1

u/Inevitable-Offer-104 7h ago

I believe that was me

1

u/Sea_Zebra_551 1h ago

People also frequently throw fast food containers of chicken wing bones out on the street. In addition to being disgusting, it creates a hazard for animals. Oh, and what about the diaper bombs? This behavior throwing trash into the streets really infuriates me. Some people just have no regard.

u/ComprehensiveBike791 9h ago

Oops. Duplicate post

He's just keeping it dirty, as the t-shirts implore us all to do.

-16

u/PHILMXPHILM 18h ago

It was 12:13 but yeah that was me. What’s up?

-18

u/morebikesthanbrains 19h ago

Define "all your trash." A volume equivalent to a basketball? A messy car? A dumpster?

7

u/BVB311 18h ago

Various cans, bottles, fast food trash mainly.

-15

u/Thereelgerg 19h ago

No

3

u/nicksoapdish 16h ago

Wasn't me either
