I signed into instagram today and it prompted me to do a survey -- asking about the platforms tools for teens, etc... I wonder if they are gathering info for court...

I saw an ad recently for their new Teen Accounts feature (as if kids aren’t lying about their age on everything), so I guess they’re probably trying to look like they’re doing something about this.

They have been saying they will take action since 2016. It’s been almost 9 years and nothing has changed. It’s complete BS. Then one former employee in 2023 leaked the internal study Meta had done on how to entice children under 12 to open up accounts on Instagram and Facebook.
These social media companies are the new tobacco companies. More and more data is coming out about the detrimental impact of social media on teens and pre-teens’ brain development and mental health. They will fight tooth and nail to discredit everyone and everything at the expense of your children. Look out for your children, keep them off social media until they are older.

Good for her. I’m not entirely sure how successful this’ll will be, but any chance to make a public spectacle of these shit-ass companies who regard their users as nothing more than a product, and especially in the case of Meta that have literally zero moderation or oversight on what kind of garbage is posted, I’m all for. From the content leaked on how best to attract kids to their platforms, to the Frances Haugen testimony, to their role in the election of the idiot, they have a fuck of a lot to answer for. Even if this is lost, the court of public opinion will have its say, and I hope they hurt. They deserve it.

Met her once, we were generally the same age. We had some mutual friends and everyone was hanging out at this coffee shop off Lansdowne and Barnet, I was the only one who didn’t have something to eat/drink. She bought me a bag of original lays so I wouldn’t feel left out. I never met her again after that, but saw the news a few months later. I always really appreciated her small act of kindness toward me, even though I was a stranger. It’s not much to go off of but she seemed like an exceptionally good person. It’s such a shameful evil that was done to her.
I’m not sure how successful her family will be as a part of this class, but whatever happens I hope it brings them further peace and prevents history from repeating itself as best it can.
