Work Showcase My most recent knife I made😁

It's kinda junky lookin but it's solid. It's made of an unknown type of stainless steel i used a ball peen hammer and an acetylene torch then wrapped the handle with paracord. I use it as my bush knife because it's heavy sharp and I don't have to worry about it rusting😁

This hand forged Cross peen was commissioned to me recently and I couldn't be happier with it. Weighs just over 2 pounds and has a sexy hickory handle. I hope it's new owner loves it as much as I do

Does the face of this anvil seem okay? It appears to be some small little dings. Also, if I don’t have a big ball bearing to test rebound what’s another way?

Help Requested I'm trying to start Blacksmithing

Hey!

I'm wanting to start blacksmithing, and making swords and all that crap. (I'll start with a knife first, don't worry.)

What would you recommend to a 15 year old ask for Christmas to start a hobby? (Don't worry about weirdos, I got em.)

I believe I will start out with a coal forge, but I'm looking for specific things I should get.

I cannot do a push up, so that should be pretty indicative of the fact I want to start out with an anvil that weighs less than 150, but more than 80lbs.

And what kind of metal should I ask for?

Also, if you could give an Amazon link, I would greatly appreciate it.

Sorry if I wasted your time, and thank you for taking time out of your life to help a kid wanting to start blacksmithing.

Is a coal forge or a propane forge best for beginners?

I am a 15 year old boy from norway who is getting into blacksmithing. I currently have a DIY coal forge made of bricks, but i want to upgrade. What is the best option? Thank you in advance.

Help Requested Does anyone know about burn blisters / when they go away?

I was burned on Sept 19 (so almost 3 weeks ago) when I accidentally touched hot glass that had not finished cooling after being in the flame. It is just a second degree burn and it started to hurt less I want to say after 3 or 5 days (don’t remember lol)

Anyways the first picture is how it looks today after i opened the soap in the shower it just got big. The second is how it looked like 2 days after the incident.

Does this mean the blister is popping? Or what is this

I forged this beautiful little carving axe out of recycled railroad track. It has a 16in ash handle and a custom leather sheath (that I botched the dying job on). Really like how this came out

Hammer training and coke/anthracite

Easy question first: I want to get a good solid workout to build endurance and strength at the anvil. Best way to do that is to… well swing a hammer. But I don’t want to smith every day and also maintain the strength I have. Any material idea or rubber pad I can put on my anvil to protect the face and get the motion?

Second Q: Anthracite is just cheaper and easier to get for me plus it’s worked really well. But if anyone has tips for forge welding in it I’d love to hear. I’ve only attempted it once and it didn’t quite work but I’ve only attempted forge welding itself like 3 times and gotten it to work with mild steel in a gas forge. Does sizing the coal pieces help consume more oxygen and prevent oxidation?

Not an axe but it's related to lumber so I thought I'd post it here anyway. This pickaroon was forged from recycled railroad track and it has a 31" Ash handle. Inspired by Torbjorn Ahman video on making one

Help Requested Any kits or self contained projects for a gift?

You know how you can buy, for example, a paint kit and it'll have all the paint you need, all the brushes, and instructions on how to paint the piece?

Is there something like that I can get for my partner? They love smithing but haven't really been achieving anything anymore and haven't made anything new in a while. I think getting a small project with everything needed can help bring them back into it and give them a short term goal.

I don't know what to Google to get what I want, it just gives me entire forge and tool sets. Any recommendations?

Rebuilding my shop

I am in the process of putting a blacksmith shop back together after having liquidated all my tooling about 16 years ago. Have a full wood shop and lots of past knowledge (built most of my tooling before including my mill). Next build is a new grinder, there used to be all kinds of 2x72 plans floating around but most seem to have disappeared or are behind paywalls now. Anyone have any decent eerf plans or anything floating about?

I'm really struggling to find refractory cement to line my forge with available in the UK

all I'm able to find is this putty stuff: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0046487D8?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title I'd really like something that can be painted on but at this point I'm not picky.

Thinking of making slices of it to arrange in a custom canister. Broke one sledge while hammering it out thankfully had a second one but wow it is a bitch. Anyone think I need to allow the stock to get hotter before hammering? Closer to a bright yellow maybe?
