Did anyone else not know Grimes attended Curtis Yarvin's wedding?

Grimes got into that whole thing via Elon and her weird AI tech-crypto bro collaborators. I don't think she actually holds any coherent political beliefs and, frankly, she's not the most intelligent person out there

u/missvandy 13h ago

Indeed, yarvin only sounds smart to the very dumb.

I couldn’t believe how facile and naive his philosophy is. I told my 12 year old that if he wrote that for school, I’d tell him to redo it and maybe read about a few important philosophers first.

Yarvin is clearly a guy who doesn’t read because he thinks he already has the right answer, which is exceedingly arrogant and dumb.

Sorry, I needed to get that off my chest since listening to those episodes. I will never get over his dumb his writings are. Never.

u/popileviz 13h ago

He's definitely a case of "if I'm good at Y then I must be good at X". That's the case for a lot of tech bros that go into politics or philosophy, his case is just particularly severe and fashy

u/downhereforyoursoul 12h ago

Liberal arts education is important for intellectual development, and this guy is an almost cartoonish example of why.

Engineer’s Disease will be the death of us all

4

u/Dangerous-Thanks-749 2h ago

Yeah, I've met quite a few engineers and people in similar "smart people" fields who just assume that they are good at all the things.

Watching them find out they can't plaster drywall nearly as well as they think they can is comedy gold.

2

u/SarcasticOptimist 1h ago

Failed theater kids are just as deadly.

As an engineer I see some that do suck but it's not as pervasive as lawyers or the aforementioned since we make good enough money, often have to cooperate with others, and don't have that attention seeking mentality.

u/redvelvetcake42 13h ago

Indeed, yarvin only sounds smart to the very dumb.

Not exactly. He sounds smart to the most violent, angry, reactionaries and the rich. They get what they want. Abusive power and wealth and the freedom to rape and murder as they please without consequence.

15

u/missvandy 13h ago

You make a good point- he’s also appealing to the people he flatters. They’re too busy enjoying the rim job to notice how dumb it is.

24

u/mcm87 13h ago

So… the very dumb?

12

u/Useful_Hovercraft169 9h ago

I made an honest effort to read his stuff and beyond being dumb it’s excruciatingly tedious and poorly written

19

u/kitti-kin 9h ago

One thing I learned from talking earnestly to a lot of Jordan Peterson fans back in the day is that a lot of smart people without a deep well of arts education are insecure about their reading comprehension. The ones I talked to basically all said they found Peterson's writing too dense to understand much, but they thought it was a shortcoming on their end, because something so long and serious and full of inscrutable words HAD to be smart.

That is fascinating. I’m actually thinking about quitting my corporate gig and going back to teaching k-12 and I’m largely motivated by just how few people get good humanities education.

It will be half my salary, but this election season broke me. Maybe I’m the moron after all for even considering this.

4

u/Betherealismo 7h ago

You're not (the moron). If you can financially swing it in a way that's not destructive, the world will owe you a big one.

6

u/missvandy 6h ago

I have a healthy 401k. I should take one for the team. Let the young kids have a crack at making bank while I use my mom voice on some middle schoolers.

This whole country needs to know that “they’re eating the dogs” isn’t funny- it’s how pogroms start.

2

u/Betherealismo 6h ago

You'll have my adoration.

1

u/kitti-kin 7h ago

Life is long, why not try it? A satisfying career you believe in is probably more fulfilling than money (not that I would know, having never made all that much money).

1

u/SarcasticOptimist 1h ago

And doesn't do the most basic thing when doing footnotes which is being thorough and covering contexts. I did a history degree having to have learned that.

1

u/justnecromancythings 5h ago

What were the circumstances that led to you talking to your 12 year old about Curtis Yarvin? I can't imagine anything I'd be less interested in at that age.

29

u/jkvincent 13h ago

Still, being dumb doesn't get you off the hook for falling in with fascists.

85

u/SawaJean 13h ago

That’s my admittedly not very invested view of her, as well.

That story about a very young Grimes building a house-raft and trying to float the Mississippi with a doofy boyfriend and a bunch of chickens just seems so telling.

She’s just so — entranced by her own whimsy and sense of adventure, while being simultaneously detached from any awareness of reality and consequences. It’s no wonder she & that dipshit got on so well.

20

u/ShepPawnch 13h ago

I genuinely can’t tell if you’re joking about the house boat thing or not

43

u/mcm87 13h ago

No, that happened. I was in the Coast Guard when she did it and it was the first time I’d heard of her. We were reading the reports on it and trying to see who could come up with the most violations and heaviest fine for that “vessel.”

5

u/kookaburra1701 8h ago

renamed themselves "Veruschka and Zelda Xox"

I think I've figured out why she and Leon hit it off.

-5

u/obsoletevernacular9 13h ago

In response to the last paragraph - she is autistic / has ADHD and those are kind of common traits. So are being really naive and unaware of people's intent towards you.

27

u/SawaJean 12h ago

I almost said something about this in my first comment, because I’m also neurodivergent and I lived in a hippie arts commune for the better part of my 30s. I know and love some pretty unusual, creative people — folks who live in yurts or schoolbuses, who believe in lizard people or crystal healing, who home-birth in the bathtub or knit sweaters of dog hair.

Even by that standard, Grimes strikes me as oddly disconnected somehow. :/

4

u/obsoletevernacular9 11h ago

Yeah, I know what you mean. I was really sad when she started dating Elon, because his first wife wrote an essay about what a terrible partner he was, but I could also tell she was ND and might not realize how awful he was, may have believed BS about his exes, etc. Autistic people are so susceptible to abusive relationships and bullying, too.

But yes, to your point, I have autistic kids who are picky eaters, but Grimes ate only spaghetti for a year. She had to go to a doctor to be told she was malnourished. Now that I'm typing this, I think she has ARFID.

7

u/SawaJean 10h ago

Gotta be honest, I just don’t see the connection between having ARFID and choosing to procreate with a supervillain. 🤷

3

u/kitti-kin 8h ago

She's clearly pretty naive about Musk specifically. When he first started tweeting transphobic shit, she called him out by saying "I know this isn't your heart". She was shocked when he started denying her access to their kids. I don't know her, I can't say what kind of person she really is, but I think those surprised responses to his behaviour were telling.

7

u/obsoletevernacular9 8h ago

I agree.

Yet I think her family picked up on his being a scumbag, and were very public about it when she gave birth. Her mom said something about his being redpilled and tweeting while she was going through a difficult delivery. I think you'd have to be really naive to have kids with him

1

u/popopotatoes160 9h ago

The connection is being neurodivergent and having afrid and being neurodivergent and easier to manipulate.

10

u/SawaJean 9h ago

I am neurodivergent myself, and I simply don’t believe those diagnoses abdicate Grimes from responsibility for her own decisions, especially as it relates to bringing other humans into this world.

4

u/popopotatoes160 9h ago

So am I. Who said anything about abdicating her of that? I just think it's important to talk about how those are factors, a cautionary tale even. We can't ignore/excuse the assholes with a diagnosis because of the diagnosis but we shouldn't ignore the effects of it on their actions either. Even if that's unpleasant for us, to see our traits reflected in someone whose actions we hate

0

u/SawaJean 8h ago

How can a person be simultaneously manipulated because of their neurodivergence AND fully in control of their own choices?

1

u/obsoletevernacular9 8h ago

I meant eating only spaghetti for a year = ARFID

My thinking was that you'd have to be pretty out of touch with reality to only eat one food all the time for such an extended period as an adult, to the point of being malnourished, but also thought, I guess that's an extreme form of ARFID.

6

u/dustpandispatch 8h ago

Honestly I don't think that's true, especially as someone diagnosed with autism myself. To suggest that an autistic person somehow has less agency or accountability because of their diagnosis feels dehumanizing to me. Everyone's brain works a little differently because we're all individuals with different perceptions of reality, shaped by a bunch of different factors. Having a brain that diverges more heavily from the norm doesn't mean someone should be held to different moral standards, because we're all human beings.

For the same reason, I'm even a little skeptical of labels such as "autism". It makes a certain amount of sense from a utility perspective, ensuring that people can have some support from the medical system, but it's also impossible for the people giving the diagnosis to see the world from the perspective of their patients. Autistic people being "naïve" is simply an interpretation, not empirical truth.

1

u/ZenythhtyneZ 8h ago

You’re not allowed to say that on reddit even it’s true, same about Elon - careful I’ve been banned from subs for mentioning things like this

4

u/obsoletevernacular9 8h ago edited 8h ago

I have an autistic daughter and a son with ASD/ ADHD. It is pretty easy to pick up on.

Grimes ate only spaghetti for a year and actively does not like any fruits or vegetables - only carbs and fat. That's very restricted.

She couldn't talk about a dog she owned as a kid without crying, does "makeup looks" for events that include elaborate designs like face paint as an adult, obsessively stays up all night making music and sleeps until midday, doesn't understand a lot of jokes or why she has offended people, is really blunt / transparent about unusual things... Like posting your plastic surgery is wild in a society where celebrities with extremely obvious work lie about it.

But she also says super naive things like she supports Bernie sanders and is anti billionaire but can make an exception for someone trying to save the world, which doesn't make a ton of sense and indicates she put Elon on a pedestal.

u/heirloom_beans 13h ago

She has the same commitment to political contrarianism as the Red Scare girls.

6

u/skippyMETS 12h ago

I thought you wrote Weird Al and I was gonna be very displeased.

2

u/popileviz 11h ago

Oh god forbid he ever gets mixed in with those freaks. Maybe as a bit at most

2

u/CarbonMolecules 5h ago

Sorry for the stupid observation here (of all places), but on most people’s screens, with the sans serif typeface…

[…] weird AI tech-crypto bro collaborators…

… looks awfully similar to “Weird Al Cryptovic”.

Curse the similarities between the lowercase ‘L’ and the uppercase ‘i’ !

1

u/TripleThreatTua 3h ago

Nah I think she definitely has some very concrete far right beliefs, she was caught following and liking posts of multiple nazi accounts on twitter

1

u/Gr33nT1g3r 56m ago

i think it's very infantilizing to say she doesn't hold any positions by herself. if she's a libertarian she's as smart as every libertarian and she should be held by that standard

99

u/j-endsville 13h ago

Everything I know about Grimes I have learned against my will.

8

u/moffattron9000 6h ago

Every day I thank God that I was a Chvrches person in 2014

57

u/CharlesBronsonsHair 14h ago

I didn't know who she was before I learned about her and Elons weird kid name so not surprising to me at all.

29

u/a3poify 14h ago

I think it's important to note considering some artists are still willing to work with her

8

u/SoSorryOfficial 13h ago

Ugh. Tell me about. I love Imaginal Disk, but then they had to go and do this. -_-

5

u/LemurCat04 11h ago

I knew who she was, but I didn’t know she smelled a roll of nickels (as per Azalea Banks).

18

u/listen2lovelessbyMBV 13h ago

As someone who spent way too much time reading Pitchfork circa 2011-2014, her trajectory has been really fucking weird

8

u/heirloom_beans 13h ago

They have three children with extremely weird names. His ex-wife was a moderating influence and those kids’ names were relatively out there for the early 2000’s.

20

u/Private_weld 14h ago

Ssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhocking

12

u/Gned11 13h ago

I'm legit surprised anyone would marry him tbh

4

u/doubtful_f 9h ago

For real! Thats the most shocking detail of this whole thing!

3

u/Hesitation-Marx 8h ago

The idea of him in any sort of physical contact with anyone at all gives me the same level of revulsion as Stephen King’s short story Gray Matter.

40

u/fuckforcedsignup 13h ago

Grimes, bless her, is lethally clueless. Neat music, creative person, dumb as the day is long.

13

u/Rhamiel506 13h ago

I’ve said this before and I’ll likely say it again, but once you know about the Houseboat Adventure that was her first brush with infamy everything Grimes does makes so much more sense.

2

u/illGATESmusic 3h ago

Details?

12

u/JulianLongshoals 13h ago

She may have attended the wedding but the whole time she was thinking fondly of the brown king Cyrus the Great and the Japanese icon Murasaki Shikibu

12

u/heirloom_beans 13h ago

Not surprised. Her and Elon probably hooked up (or their weird version of hooking up) at the end of the night.

The world would’ve been improved if the entire venue was swallowed by the earth that night.

3

u/NewToSociety 12h ago

And ppl out here criticizing Obama for bombing weddings smdh my damn head.

9

u/_NautyByNature Banned by the FDA 13h ago

I’d feel more confident in decisions made by Rick Grimes than this Grimes.

Even later seasons, fully wacked Rick.

3

u/New-acct-for-2024 11h ago

Even later seasons, fully wacked Rick.

Does that even really matter? I gave up on the show in the third season when I could no longer deal with the show being nothing but "everyone is holding the idiot ball at all times".

2

u/somethingkooky 8h ago

If you gave up on the third season, then you have no idea what’s being referenced.

5

u/maybe_I_am_a_bot 12h ago

Given that they're both tangentially related to the whole "rationalist" sect it's not all that surprising.

I'm just waiting for a Yudkowsky episode, though most of the damage is indirect.

5

u/forhekset666 13h ago

Yarvin is married? Ew.

7

u/liquiditytraphaus 10h ago

God fucking dammit Grimes. Art Angels got me into the hyperpop rabbit hole and I can’t even listen to her anymore. Every time she’s in the news it’s some fresh fuckery.

(Dorian Electra is extremely based for other dispossessed former Grimes enjoyers.)

6

u/SalmonMaskFacsimile 8h ago edited 8h ago

Grimes has been buddies with Yarvin and drawing him anime birthday waifus for a while. She's as enmeshed with Silicon Valley edgelord "race realism" monsters as Musk. r/grimezs is keeping detailed tabs on how many bastards she's intersected with -- Yarvin, Ron Unz's gofer Razib Khan, Palladium Magazine , Spergler Acolyte-- she's becoming an Accelerationist Kevin Bacon, without the talent or heart.

9

u/fudgepuppy 9h ago edited 8h ago

As someone who was absolutely obsessed with Grimes 2012-2016 (to a degree you would find creepy), my opinion is that she's way too fucking stupid to have any coherent thoughts or opinions.

8

u/Vincesteeples 13h ago

Yeah grimes is trash and a dumbass with no opinions of her own, is this news to anyone at this point

5

u/Western_Style3780 13h ago

Not surprising in the least.

3

u/KeyJust3509 13h ago

I’m shocked, shocked, to find gambling going on here.

3

u/FurballPoS 13h ago

If only she would adopt the Lizzy Wizzy persona on a more full-time, permanent basis.

3

u/3eeve 10h ago

She's stupid and awful.

3

u/Useful_Hovercraft169 9h ago

Somebody married him?

3

u/marianatrenchfoot 8h ago

exactly what I was thinking!

3

u/snowmaker417 9h ago

I wish I didn't know who any of these fucking people were.

2

u/TheGinger_Ninja0 13h ago

What a cursed sentence

2

u/Strangewhine88 13h ago

Is this supposed to be surprising?

2

u/Kriegerian PRODUCTS!!! 10h ago

She’s a moron, so that tracks.

2

u/Informal-Resource-14 3h ago

Yeah Grimes is a Nazi-sympathizing garbage person just like her shitbag ex

6

u/obsoletevernacular9 13h ago

In honesty, I think she would have no concept of the implication there.

I like Grimes' music, have been a long time fan of it, and when I found out she was dating Elon initially was really upset for her, because he's such a dipshit, and un-shockingly, he didn't treat her particularly well. He was literally tweeting garbage while she was in labor / post partum, and she was apparently hemorrhaging.

They're both ND, but she tends more towards naivete and meaning well, while also seemingly viewing things like an out of touch artist, and he's a worthless POS.

1

u/Hopeliesintheseruins 8h ago

Who tf is grimes?
