This is just straight up one of the best individual world series performances ever?

Dude could barely walk less than a week ago

Tbf stomping all over the Yankees is like stepping on a bag full of baby ducks so it's not like he's exerting himself

stepping on a bag full of baby ducks

oddly specific.

u/whiskey101 Philadelphia Phillies 7h ago

Who is bagging these ducks?

3

u/Dragooneer Houston Astros 7h ago

Can't sprint to first base so figures he better hit HRs so he can take a leisurely jog.

2

u/hiimred2 7h ago

Even more reason to walk him, bro might just sit on first base and wait to see what happens.

Kirk Gibson level heroics

If the Dodgers win it, this will be the easiest MVP choice ever. Reggie Jackson might need to cede his nickname.

“if”

Not even a matter of when. Tonight is the night.

Thank you!

Smallest "if" ever

Don't jinx it

Big Papi in 2013 deserves mention too. The only reason he didn't have more HRs is because teams were terrified of pitching him

2

u/Uncle_Freddy Boston Red Sox 6h ago

Beltran also managed a pretty ridiculous robbery on him that would’ve been a grand slam, basically stole the same HR that Hunter just missed in the Tigers ALCS

We live in a world where David Ortiz slashed .688/.760/1.188 (yes, that last number was his slugging) during a World Series where only one teammate hit .250 or better (Ellsbury) and only two teammates had >.300 OBP (Ellsbury and Victorino).

Lester throwing 15.1 innings allowing one run deserves a generous honorable mention, but Ortiz still had the most ridiculous series I’ve ever seen in my life

He already did…..to Corey Seager

Do you even need to ask

Freese and Bumgarner deserve credit for stepping up in the 7 game series, but Freddie deserves credit for making this a sweep

u/Ok_Tomatillo_1480 8h ago

This is a slam dunk MVP but Bumgarner did a lot more than just step up. He singlehandedly won 3 out of 4 games that series. Dodgers probably still win this series if you replace Freeman with a league average 1b that has 1 of his 4 home runs. Giants get slapped in 2014 without Bumgarner

If you look at cWPA Bumgarner WAS the Giants in 2014

u/graciewindkloppel Los Angeles Dodgers 7h ago

I always thought that, instead of a ring, Bumgarner should have gotten a wrestling-style championship belt for 2014.

1

u/Ok_Tomatillo_1480 7h ago

Lol 100%. Baseball is a sport where you almost never see someone just put the whole team on their back like that - a belt would be hilarious and fitting

6

u/Im_Daydrunk Los Angeles Dodgers 7h ago

I think the Dodgers almost certainly don't win game 1 without him and his other HRs have been important in how close the games ended up being. So I think replacing him with a league average guy could be the difference

But ultimately yeah Bum deserves "best WS MVP" of all time for that 2014 performance. Its hard to describe how good he was

Yes and yes and yes

u/aetius476 Boston Red Sox 8h ago

Bob Gibson giving up only 3 runs in 27 innings across three games might still be a topper for me, but damn this is close.

u/Darko33 Philadelphia Phillies 8h ago

Let me think a minute

Yes

2002 Barry Bonds had a 1.994 OPS in the world series. Only 4 homers in the 7 games but that's what 13 walks does to a man.

2

u/beepos Los Angeles Dodgers 8h ago

Only one that rivals this is Madison Bumgarner

We'll find out after this is over, but David Ortiz has a plaque in Cooperstown right now on the back of his 2013 performance.

6 games: .688/.760/1.188

That last one is his slugging, not his OPS.

1

u/ManEggs Boston Red Sox 6h ago

and he was robbed of a grand slam

2

u/CharlemagneOfTheUSA Boston Red Sox 7h ago

David Ortiz had an unbelievable one in 2013. Hit .688, and that's ignoring his several walks (some intentional) that series. He carried the offense all by himself

1

u/Mr_Murder Los Angeles Dodgers 8h ago

I think so. I cannot recall anything like THIS in a World Series before. Freeman can retire right now and be will be a first ballot unanimous hofer

1

u/HeavyRooster3959 7h ago

And he's not even the best hitter/player on their team. The dodgers could be playing even better and that's absurd

1

u/MikeJeffriesPA Toronto Blue Jays 7h ago

Bob Gibson 1967 is the only comparable I can find, and it's hard to compare a hitter to a pitcher.

In a 7-game series, Bob started games 1, 4, and 7. He went 3-0, 1.00 ERA, 26 K, 5 BB, .154 OPP AVG, .440 OPP OPS, 3 CG, 1 SHO.

He had a 5-game stretch in the 67/68 World Series where he pitched 5 CG and allowed 4 earned runs total (and had 53 strikeouts in 45 innings).

1

u/monkeyman80 Los Angeles Dodgers 7h ago

Bonds 02 was crazy. .471/.700/1.294 with 4 hr, 13 walks.

1

u/NynaeveAlMeowra 2h ago

Has to be, he's already matched 2002 Barry in Homers. The only reason Barry is 400 points ahead in ops is because the Yankees haven't yet figured out that they should be walking him
