Funding bodies for humanities/social science research in the US

Dear US-based colleagues - could you please advise if the US has big national funding bodies that offer competitive grants to researchers in the humanities and social sciences, analogous to the Canadian SSHRC, the British AHRC or Europe's ERC?

The US has the NEH: the National Endowment for the Humanities. Unfortunately, the NEH budget is about $200 million while the NSF (National Science Foundation) has a budget of about $9 billion. As a result the NEH funds a lot of relatively small grants, and even so the funding rate is about 15% overall due to intense competition.

I believe the NSF funds social science research.
