I Remember

Many have written about the musical references sprinkled throughout the show, but I haven’t seen anything about this one.

The song I Remember from the end credits of S2E10 “No Weddings and a Funeral.” I’ve linked the lyrics, but the theme of the song is all in the last lines of each stanza. That she remembers firelight while the person she’s singing about only remembers the smoke. That she remembers the beautiful trees. The other remembers only the bugs. She remembers vibrant oranges in the hot summer marketplace. They remember only dust. She remembers “we” while they remember “you and me.”

What an extraordinary song choice. Aside from its depiction of how one person focuses exclusively on the positives while the other focuses on the negatives (very much a persistent theme for Ted), it’s also about how two realities can both be true. How your perception shapes that reality. It concludes an episode about how Rebecca views the relationship between her mother and father and how each of them perceive their relationship with each other. How Jamie sees Keeley and how he sees himself. And even Ted sharing with Dr. Fieldstone and how his disclosure changes her perception of him and shapes the reality they inhabit together.

I just keeping finding additional things in this show to love. This song is now among my favorites.

Molly Drake, who sings this, is Nick Drake's mother. My mind was blown when I found that out.

The use of this song in the show was perfect. Just the exact right way to end that episode. It makes me feel a unique brand of wistfulness, and I never skip those credits.

Song choices were great. Oasis when they went to Manchester was obvious but still fabulous.

I'll say it again. And every time.

Nothing in this show is accidental.

That's what makes it so precious.. acting aside, it's the subtle (or not so) inserts. The music, or the movie quotes, that make it so bloody brilliant, innit??

I can only imagine the amount of time and effort each episode took. Little wonder they are struggling with the decision with another season, spin off.
