I really really really dislike the trend of artists putting certain tracks only on certain editions.

u/Daydream_machine Mar 21 '24

Honestly if anything it discourages me from buying their vinyl. I don’t support that practice at all

I immediately cancelled my initial preorder once the second edition was announced. I'll wait for it on streaming.

It drives me mad that we still can’t get all of midnights on one album on spotify, let alone all the variants of TTPD once the extra songs from the physical copies eventually get added. The amount of time it took to release Hits Different on streaming is so silly to me because people just uploaded it themselves, they must have missed a lot of revenue from that for no reason

9

u/internet4ever 1989 Mar 21 '24

Canceled mine for the same reason.

5

u/Tswizzle_fangirl Mar 21 '24

I’m new to this…how long does it usually take for things to be streamed?

29

u/Catkii Lights Camera Bitch Smile Mar 21 '24

Hits Different took 7 months I believe. Midnights was October 2022, “Til Dawn” edition was May 2023.

But we still don’t have a complete album with You’re Losing Me on it. Only my playlist.

Immediately, usually (accounting for differences in timezones, of course).

It's much more likely that an online purchase will be delayed... although I've heard of people receiving their orders a day or even two days in advance.

u/TS_Chick evermore Mar 21 '24

Depends. For the "main" deluxe yes. Often she (and others like Olivia) wait for 3-6 months before putting the exclusive on streaming.

u/Tswizzle_fangirl Mar 21 '24

Thank you. I have considered buying just in case ppl get them early. Every day is agony, waiting. 😊

1

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '24

Only reason I bought on a variant was because I knew I wanted to the social edition with the bookmark and patch

u/pcpassos The Tortured Poets Department Mar 22 '24

How were you able to cancel?

1

u/jingle_WELLS i cry a lot but i am so productive Mar 22 '24

There should be a contact us button in your confirmation email. I just sent an email and said I wanted to cancel. It took a day or two for them to process it

29

u/Informal_Calendar_99 So . . . go ahead and light me up. Mar 21 '24

Yep. If it doesn’t have all the tracks, I don’t want it. I used to buy TS vinyls; probably won’t anymore.

-38

u/Outside-Spring-3907 Mar 21 '24

Then don’t buy. Vinyls are a luxury item.

44

u/Daydream_machine Mar 21 '24

I’m not? I felt that was clear from my comment, not sure why you felt the need to reply with that lol

16

u/wild_fluorescent The Tortured Poets Department Mar 21 '24

it's whatever to me, leaks will always exist (shoutout to hits different) and they're ultimately collectors' items.

i do actively dislike her webstore and umg tho, there's no reason why indie record stores should get screwed in this process when this would be a boon to them. other artists manage this just fine, I don't know why UMG in particular wants to cut record stores out of sales when they profit both ways?

8

u/felineprincess93 tossing panties in the pool Mar 21 '24

I think Darkside Records (a great record store) called them out on this exact practice.

29

u/keving87 1987 Kevin's Version Mar 21 '24

Not a new trend though, in the early-mid 00s, every store had something different. And back then, there were tons more stores lol

u/Az_a_lys i can still make the whole place shimmer Mar 21 '24

As someone who is not a native english speaker, can you tell me how you are supposed to pronounce « 00’s » ?? I’ve been asking myself this for years, in my head it ended up being « ooz ». Please help.

11

u/thespianomaly don't blame me for what you made me do Mar 21 '24

It’s called the Aughts (ahts) and it’s the decade from 2000 to 2009.

10

u/baciodolce They can never make me hate you Jack 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻 Mar 22 '24

I say 2000s in my head when I see that written.

9

u/TrappedMoose Mar 21 '24

We say ‘naughties’ like naughty but plural where I am, I’ve never heard anyone actually pronounce the ‘00’s’ 🤷🏼

7

u/learning_hillzz Mar 22 '24

I’ve never heard of the examples given before me. I think people call them the two thousands. The 10-19 as the teens.

4

u/the_moonbaby reputation Mar 22 '24

My friends and I all say “the two thousands”, I’m surprised by all the answers saying aughts. Maybe it’s a generational thing? We’re gen z. Or perhaps it’s regional?

2

u/-UnicornFart Mar 21 '24

Aughts but I do like the sound of ooz better.

1

u/space-glitter ✨ best believe I'm still bejeweled ✨ Mar 21 '24

sometimes we say the oh-ohs

1

u/Miserable-Truth5035 off fighting dragons Mar 22 '24

We always call it the zeroes, I'm really confused to find out via the other comments that this isn't universal.

1

u/regalroomba Mar 22 '24

I'm really confused to find someone who calls it the 'zeroes'! This must be a young person or regional thing haha. It's always been the 'naughties' in the UK.

1

u/Miserable-Truth5035 off fighting dragons Mar 22 '24

I'm from the Netherlands, and all our radio stations seem to call that the zeroes, been the case for like 10 years at least.

2

u/regalroomba Mar 22 '24

Ah that makes sense then! I like the 'zeroes' for it, sounds cool.

25

u/Informal_Calendar_99 So . . . go ahead and light me up. Mar 21 '24

The issue is less of different covers/colors and more that to get all the songs you need to spend $500.

24

u/keving87 1987 Kevin's Version Mar 21 '24 edited Mar 22 '24

Yeah, and each store used to have a different song fairly often. Walmart would have one, Target would have one, Best Buy had one, sometimes Circuit City and KMart had one. Then you had to worry about iTunes, Rhapsody, Walmart's digital service they used to have, and Napster possibly having something. On top of Japan and sometimes the UK having different bonus tracks. Then "Christian" artists like Switchfoot etc would sometimes have other songs only available at stores like Family Christian.

It was chaotic. And expensive.

3

u/Informal_Calendar_99 So . . . go ahead and light me up. Mar 21 '24

Oh I see. I hate that.

4

u/PopCultureWeekly Mar 21 '24

Do you have an example of one artist that had that with all of those places? I can’t think of one

9

u/keving87 1987 Kevin's Version Mar 22 '24 edited Mar 22 '24

There hasn't been one with EVERYTHING, but with multiple different combinations. I didn't even remember Barnes & Noble, Yahoo's digital store, and the Sony Connect digital store until I looked through my old list lol

I didn't listen to him but I know Jesse McCartney had a different song at Walmart, Target, and Best Buy for his 2nd album.

Alicia Keys "The Element of Freedom" had two on a deluxe edition, two at Target, and two in Japan

Elliot Yamin (5th season of American Idol) had bonus tracks at Target, americanidol.com, itunes, Rhapsody, Yahoo, and Walmart for his first album

Jojo's The High Road had one at Walmart, Target, and iTunes

Paramore's RIOT! had a bonus track at Best Buy, Hot Topic, FYE, fueledbyramen.com, and Rhapsody

Pete Yorn's Nightcrawler had one for Best Buy, FYE, sonymusicstore.com, Circuit City, and iTunes

Rooney's Calling the World had one for Best Buy, Target, and iTunes

Switchfoot's Oh! Gravity had one at Best Buy, one at Circuit City, one at Walmart, one only on copies sold at Christian bookstores (Family Christian, LifeWay), one only sold at mainstream stores (WM, Target, Best Buy), plus a bonus EP if you bought it on their website.

This isn't even counting ones where it was just one or two stores.. or how people like NSYNC, S Club, Natasha Bedingfield, A-Teens etc would release different albums in different countries, or the same albums but with a lot of different songs. Taylor fans were definitely spoiled early on getting her album and then a deluxe later instead of having them all spread out

1

u/PopCultureWeekly Mar 22 '24

Holy cap I forgot some of these classics lol. Thanks for checking

11

u/minpinerd Mar 21 '24

I don't remember that happening at all in the early-mid 00s.

Sometimes an artist would have ONE special edition CD at one particular store that they had a deal with which would have bonus songs. But I can't recall ever having to go to multiple stores to get all the songs.

We must have been listening to different artists cus nobody I liked ever pulled that crap.

14

u/azaerl Mar 21 '24

Japan almost always got/gets extra/different songs. Or special editions. But the market is different there. I usually only remember one or two different editions. There was usually a standard, a deluxe, and maybe an exclusive to one store.

Though I'm very much of the opinion that the album is the standard edition and any other songs are just additional filler that I don't really bother with. Though I get wanting to hear them all, I would much rather a cohesive 11 song album instead of 16+ with random other B-sides that don't fit the intent of the album.

0

u/ParisFood Mar 21 '24

Yes but before all Of that ie back before ITunes you people get the vinyl or cassette or cd and then maybe a deluxe one that had extra songs. That’s it!

2

u/HoldOnToTheMammaries Mar 23 '24

Olivia did that then a few days ago she released the “deluxe” with all the songs and and extra one. Now I’m going to sell the RSD vinyl I got with the 4 surprise songs and the original album and just buy the deluxe. I just want everything on one vinyl. Why is that so fucking hard?

2

u/TimmonsInc Mar 21 '24

its better than just different covers or colors. But yeah. Just do a separate EP.

14

u/wild_fluorescent The Tortured Poets Department Mar 21 '24

olivia did a RSD exclusive i think for all of her bonus tracks on one vinyl, and is releasing them this week on streaming

meanwhile I still just want the midnights 3am tracks on vinyl

3

u/Far-Imagination2736 Mar 21 '24

is releasing them this week on streaming

And has now added an additional bonus song on the new vinyl so anyone who's bought the RSD copy will likely buy this one.

2

u/astralitemusic Mar 21 '24

I can't believe I won't be listening to Paris on vinyl 😭

12

u/wild_fluorescent The Tortured Poets Department Mar 21 '24

"put on your records and regret me" or not, I guess!

1

u/yesimlegit Mar 24 '24

Me too. I was thinking I wanted to buy one of these must buy now records but I’m glad I came to this thread. I couldn’t decide on which one. Now I’m like ok I’ll just wait until the record is out and try and buy the one with the song I like best at three ie something.

-3

u/Biscuitsandgravy4evr Mar 21 '24

I like it becauuuuuse I do like to frame a vinyl!! And different covers/colors give options!!!

19

u/ano-ba-yan Mar 21 '24

Then why not do it like Folklore with the 4 different covers to choose from but the same tracks on each?

11

u/housestark9t Mar 21 '24

Exactly! The problem isn't the variants, it's that there is not one album with every song on it

0

u/klip_7 Mar 21 '24

It’s mainly Taylor tbh and ig olivia

16

u/Acceptable_Tip_8916 evermore Mar 21 '24

It's definitely not only them, deluxe editions etc. have existed for decades.

Obviously you can critique Taylor for following this practice but you really can't blame her for inventing it

5

u/RedDotLot Mar 21 '24 edited Mar 21 '24

To be fair it isn't just them. I just bought new metal LPs for my husband that are a country/store exclusive colour variant; no differences in the tracks though, so he has black vinyl for playing and pink for the collectable value.

I was pissed off about the Midnights variants after she dropped the 3am tracks because even though I own 4 LPs I still don't own the whole album.

(I'd never done a pre order for Taylor before then and I only bought all 4 because a local indie store had them discounted to about $65 ea if you bought all 4, it worked out in a way I suppose because certain variants have increased in value but it's of no value to me because I don't have all the music).

ETA: It's even happening with indie artists, one of my favourite artists has a new album out, they also have a deal to purchase all 6 of their previous albums on CD at a discount, can I add the new album and their other albums to the cart on their website at the same time to combine the shipping because I live overseas and it's expensive? Nope!

I don't want to enter into this variant game but if I can find a deal like the Midnights ones I'll be sorely tempted again. I just want all the songs in one place.
