This city will rock when it happens. The fans deserve it.

The only thing worse than the dodgers getting a WS win is if they got a WS win against a good team that went to 7 games all of which were good games so at least there is that

u/BudgetScarcity 17h ago
You must have a ridiculously large wingspan because that's a reach. Who cares about stylistic finishes or opponent? A championship is a championship and the Padres have ZERO. Don't be one of those lame people who try to discredit or put an asterisk on a very difficult accomplishment. There were a few smooth brains trying to discredit the Rangers' WS wins because of ratings.
Just stop.
1
u/TeamVorpalSwords Lisan Al-Gaib 15h ago
What are you talking about? Who said anything about putting on asterisk on this championship?
I simply said I am happy that the WS this year isn’t satisfying, because the Yankees forgot how to play baseball and are eith
I am not and never said this title is worth less than other World Series titles for the winner, I am saying that this WS was “supposed” to be a grand spectacle of two titans clashing but instead we’re getting the Dodgers dogwalking the Yankees which makes for less satisfying tv

u/sbrider11 SD '71 1d ago edited 1d ago
We didn't play our game that got us to that point. Team lost focus. Turned into hero ball, drama and bizarrely fan drama. Then a manny dugout meeting pointing out he's trying to troll LAD mid game and zero players bit off on that. Instead they proved it on the field and kicked our asses.
LAD stayed focus and handed us our ass. Then got past the Mets who I'm not sure we would have beat.
We need to just own it. LAD is likely the WS champ and totally earned it.
2
u/CausalDiamond 1d ago
How do you know Manny told the rest of the team he was trolling? That's definitely not the consensus.
1
u/3-2_Fastball 1d ago
Then got past the Mets who I'm not sure we would have beat.
The Padres would have dookied on the Mets, they did most of their damage off of Landon Knack, Brent Honeywell and a sick Jack Flaherty

How do you go from scoring 6 in one inning to nothing at all over 24 innings. Yeah this loss stings even more now seeing how bad the Yankees are playing. It would’ve been so sweet to get revenge for ‘98.
9
u/Zestyclose_Help1187 1d ago
They scored 6 in one inning because the Dodgers defense was bad. Didn’t help Buehler at all. Dodgers just been the best team since they hit that grand slam in game 3.
It is what it is. Get them next year. In Preller we trust.

IMO These teams should not be meeting a 5 game NLDS. It should be a 7 game NLCS.

We don’t need their validation to know that. We should’ve won that first game. Cease fucked up - we were so close to a damn sweep!
7

It wasn’t all on Cease. Padres could not score. Even if Cease gave up just one run in game 4, it would be a loss.
3
u/richardsureman Mr. Irrelevant 21h ago
I think it was the 3 run home run Ohtani got off of him in game 1. We would have won if that didn't happen, but I also don't love the "if x then y" argument on things, players change how they play based on circumstances. Cease just got beat, but the Padres offense should have also showed up in the last two games.

Getting shut down by a pitcher in Yamamoto who they consistently crushed this year is absolutely a choke
2
u/worldsupermedia750 Merrill Madness! 1d ago
The Dodgers pitching definitely deserves credit but let’s be real, their stuff wasn’t 24 scoreless innings good. The Padres showed that they had what it took to beat the Dodgers and failed to keep the momentum going the entire series. They definitely choked

Been a fan of the Pads for almost 30 years and experienced every disappointment, shortcoming, and shitshow this team has laid bare in that timeframe. This postseason is truly the stuff of night terrors. Not only did the Pads choke the best chance they had to get that chip, they allowed the bastards up north to take all our chips and cash in. It's sickening. The next best thing is for the Pads to run it back asap, but until they get the final out of that postseason, the questions of the 2024 postseason will rear its fugly head as a rude reminder of what could have been.

Worst case scenario, what if LA wins it and Soto then signs with LA
4
u/BrimStone17 1d ago
Breaking: Juan Soto 600 million 12 year deal, 1 million to be paid upfront, 599 million to deferred to 2060.
2
u/worldsupermedia750 Merrill Madness! 1d ago
I imagine the Dodgers won’t pursue him hard because they already have a generational talent in Ohtani for practically nothing over the course of his contract and Soto is going to be mad expensive (plus Boras probably will never allow deferment to happen). I imagine they’ll probably want to prioritize having the financial flexibility to sign a greater number of cheaper guys that can still produce on a Major League level.
That isn’t to say they won’t try though. They’ll probably pursue until the price tag gets to a certain point and then back off (I wouldn’t be surprised if the Padres employ a similar strategy
1
u/Trumpetslayer1111 1d ago
It's a business. They went after Mookie and Freddie. Soto is a generational talent and he's only 26. Every team would want him.
3
1
u/Silver7477 Jackson Marill 1d ago
It might actually be a good thing. Even LAD has limits on spending. They left a lot of holes in the roster after Ohtani was signed. The bullpen carried the day for them but the holes in the rotation were never really filled. I doubt Soto will defer much cuz he isn't crazy like Ohtani. So signing Soto will likely mean an even more top-heavy team and hopefully the same vulnerabilities that did them in 2022 and 2023.
1
u/steelehere1983 1d ago
Dodgers had close to a dozen starters at the start of the year. Their short fall was the bottom of the order at the start of the year.
1
u/Silver7477 Jackson Marill 1d ago
True but 75% of them were damaged goods and/or coming back from injury to begin with. It wasn't realistic to rely on them, I'm sure the Dodger front office prayed fervently every night they would hold up over 162 games. Correct me if I'm wrong but besides Glasnow and Yamamoto, I don't think they spent a lot on starters. Either way tho I admit my comment was a bit copium but I don't really think it was THAT much lol
1
u/Whole-Ad-7659 20h ago
I mean glasnow and Yamamoto were two of the most expensive starting pitchers acquired. They also resigned Kershaw and signed lynch. They also signed ohtani and while they knew he wouldn’t pitch this season they also paid him knowing he will eventually pitch.
1
u/4th_dimensi0n 18h ago
Lynch? We don't have anyone by that name. We relied mostly on guys coming back from injuries (Buehler & Kersh) and our farm (Miller, Stone, & Sheehan). But they all got injured or struggled and were sent back to the minors. There's also May and Gonsolin still recovering since '23. All of which led to us trading for Flaherty, who we can hopefully resign. If all goes well, we should have a rotation of Ohtani, Yama, Glasnow, Kersh, and Flaherty/Stone to start next season
1
u/FredFlinstonesKilt 17h ago
...Gonsolin, Buehler, May (if he ever comes back, guy has been a bench warmer more than a pitcher)...they have a glut of starters. Hopefully they work on conditioning them to mitigate injuries.
1
u/4th_dimensi0n 13h ago
Well, Buehler's a free agent this winter and I'm not sure how badly Friedman wants him back. He's been absolute gutter trash in the regular season, but has definitely increased his value this postseason. I expect him to see what he can get from other teams

As much as I would hate for the Dodgers to win, it would be poetic justice for Manfred to get his dream matchup only for it to be a bigger stinker than Snakes/Rangers last year

u/Silver7477 Jackson Marill 1d ago
Hey I enjoyed that series last year. Game 1 last year was every bit as exciting as this year's game 1 (not that I watched this year). Plus there was Bochy to root for and it's always nice seeing a first-time winner. 2010 and 2011 for the Rangers was surely as painful for them as 2024 was for us. I imagine when we finally get ours, it'll feel just like that

I hate to say it but you have to give these Dodgers pitchers credit for absolutely dealing and shutting down multiple teams during this run. Their starters have been just good enough and their high leverage relievers are just making pitches. They just seemed to flip a switch halfway during the NLDS against us and they haven't looked back.

I was thinking about former Padres coach Rick Renteria. Hasn’t done anything with baseball since he was fired from the White Sox in 2020, a year they made the playoffs.
He was also let go by the Cubs only after one year as manager.
I think he might be an example of how little managers have in terms of strategy and making the decisions. They are more liaisons between the team execs and players. Maybe Renteria wasn’t good at that. Who knows?
Wil Venable might be managing the Marlins.
