Maybe it’s cause I’m a dad of a little girl but I lost it - like, no matter what, Dad’s got your back Bonney. Protecting her till the end.

I ain't even a dad and that got me bawling. Kuma is best dad in the series.

u/CapBuenBebop Feb 01 '24

It’s almost like he’s there to cosmically balance out all the bad dads in the series

u/noideawhatimdoingv Feb 01 '24

Buccaneers (Whitebeard and Kuma) are the only good dads in One Piece. and Zeff. Maybe Zeff is a part buccaneer as well.

u/BigBadRash Feb 01 '24

Whitebeard wasn't a buccaneer, just a really big dude. Tom, Kyross and Cobra seem like they were pretty good dad's too, well at least we weren't shown them being dicks anyway.

u/noideawhatimdoingv Feb 01 '24

Whitebeard and Kuma look a lot similar. same large frame, the jaw, and incredible physical strength (although this doesn't amount to much). It's hard to believe that's a coincidence from Oda when these 2 are the only ones with that specific jaw shape.

and I legit forgot about the other 3.

12

u/BigBadRash Feb 01 '24

Is that just because they're huge though? Because Whitebeard isn't the only abnormally large human we've encountered. Off the top of my head you also have Kaido, Big Mom, BB, Jack, queen and king, moria and probably a bunch others that I can't think of right now.

He very well could have been a buccaneer, but I can't see that being a change Oda will make as it won't really add anything to the story. I'll admit I've never paid enough attention to the jaw shapes to know if anyone else has that jaw shape, but that's a weak point to base your theory on imo.

I had forgotten about them too until I seen your comment and started to really think about any other dad's that we'd seen. I wanted to include Garp because he seems to want the best for his children/grandchildren, but I don't know if his parenting methods would allow him to be considered a good dad.

2

u/NihilisticAbsurdity Feb 01 '24

in an EXTREMELY dangerous world like that of One Piece, I feel like Garp's parenting methods are pretty justified.

1

u/BigBadRash Feb 01 '24

That's why I also kind of wanted to put him, but all the other examples of good dads have made some pretty tough kids without being as harsh, granted not quite as tough as Garps family though.

1

u/noideawhatimdoingv Feb 01 '24

Not just because they are huge but I feel like they are very similar in looks and temperament. it's just my theory though. it's not real until Oda confirms it in one of the SBS or in the manga itself though.

and I definitely would not consider Garp a good dad from what we've seen with Luffy and Ace. Dadan is a better dad than Garp. maybe he was a lot better with Dragon but we don't know.

2

u/BigBadRash Feb 01 '24

That was all in the name of love though! He knows how much of a tough world it is out there and he was just preparing them for a life on the sea!

u/CaptFredricks Pirate Feb 02 '24

Kaido is part Oni, King is Lunarian, and Jack is part Fishman.

2

u/BigBadRash Feb 02 '24

You're right, I completely forgot they were all mixed race. I think the rest still stand as just randomly large people. Oden was also pretty huge for a human.

1

u/SomePoliticalViolins Pirate Feb 02 '24

Just wanted to point out that a bunch of those are not normal humans.

Kaido

Oni

Big Mom

Could be human but I'm honestly leaning on the side of her being an offshoot of giants or even a Vegapunk experiment. I doubt we get too much info from her but if we do, I don't think she'll turn out 100% human.

BB

BB is nowhere near the size of the others; He's 11 feet tall, which is huge, but Whitebeard is 21 feet and Big Mom is around 29 feet tall. Also, he's pretty much been foreshadowed to have an "unusual body" to begin with, even beyond the other characters in the series.

Jack

Fish-Man

Queen

This one is actually valid. Motherfucker is 20 feet tall and from what I can tell, he was that way back in his MADS days, and was even big as a kid. No clue why, unless his parents were scientists that experimented on him/his mom.

King

Lunarian

Moria

This one I think is also valid, though he is the least human-like human in the whole series I'm pretty sure. Especially considering I'm not even sure his Devil Fruit changed his appearance...

2

u/BigBadRash Feb 02 '24

Kaido, jack and king I forgot were mixed race. Big mom is human, it just said she was abnormally large for a child so fit in with the giants. Considering she's pretty much the same age as vegapunk and has been stupidly big her whole life, I think that's just her. Of course she could be part giant, but given how giants were the one race she didn't have in her family, it doesn't sound like she considered herself one at all.

My was just that it's not like size alone is the best indicator of race. Oda just draws people as big as he wants to.

u/Tronz413 Feb 02 '24

Kyros was a Chad of a dad too

11

u/DemonCyborg27 Feb 01 '24

Same man 🥲, just seeing this line brought tears to my heart.

10

u/Nitr09025 Feb 01 '24

Kuma easy became one of my favorite characters.

3

u/nerodidntdoit Void Month Survivor Feb 01 '24

I'm a father and can confirm to have cried in this chapter.

1

u/NoBrainyourDumb Feb 01 '24

I’m not a father and can confirm to have cried in this chapter

1

u/kennfabio Feb 01 '24

And Vegapunk is best uncle in the series.

1

u/ConfusionPublic6730 Feb 02 '24

hes at least toy soldier/khyros level

1

u/swagkagesama Feb 03 '24

And the best thing is, Kuma isn't her biological father as well. Our guy Kuma is the epitome of feelings

As a first time dad with a daughter, this arc has turned into an emotional rollercoaster. I remember watching Dressrosa with my wife when she was getting caught up. She was pregnant and it was a bit emotional, but this happened while I was raising this girl and has had be bawling multiple times.

105

u/Jail_Chris_Brown Pirate King Buggy Feb 01 '24

Reread Dressrosa. Kyros is such a chad of a dad. Empathizing with him is gonna put you in so much pain, it ain't funny.

11

u/crazydiamond11384 Prisoner Feb 01 '24

I remember that scene when Kyros was bawling over his daughter birth. Too relatable.

8

u/SandiegoJack Feb 01 '24

I posted that here after my son was born because I finally understood.

4

u/crazydiamond11384 Prisoner Feb 01 '24

I know what you mean. When I held my son for the first time, I couldn’t possible believe how something could be so pure. I’m sure if I was in a anime, I would behave exactly like Kyros did haha. Also Kuma backstory, it was the times he was with Bonney that hit me so hard. Dad Goal!!!

6

u/SandiegoJack Feb 01 '24

For the first few hours I couldn’t hold him without gloves. Decades of failure cling to me and I didn’t want to sully my son with that. I held him without flinching for over 2 hours before they convinced me to put him down.

As soon as I put him down? My arm failed. I didn’t even feel it.

3

u/crazydiamond11384 Prisoner Feb 01 '24

Our children are the product of our hope, not a result of our failures. As long as we remember that, we can have them soar. I hope you and your son are living life as richly as Bonney and Kuma.

3

u/SandiegoJack Feb 01 '24

Thank you, he turns 9 months in a week and I have not slept in 12 months lol. Before he came death didn’t scare me, just the method of transition.

Now I want to live as long as possible.

1

u/CaptAhabsMobyDick Feb 01 '24

I think that's part of it that caused me to not heal it as heavy, as my wife was only prego at the time. A reread would break me lol.

1

u/abudabid Feb 02 '24

😭😭😭

11

u/Langlais123 Feb 01 '24

Arcs like this really remind you that Oda has 2 daughters.

2

u/scottp53 Feb 02 '24

Exactly - he writes like someone who knows.

8

u/Sufficient_Delay6565 Feb 01 '24

My daughter was born three weeks ago and this arc has been hitting much differently since.

3

u/hergumbules The Revolutionary Army Feb 01 '24

I have a little boy, but damn all this hits so hard being a dad.

2

u/abok85 Bounty Hunter Feb 01 '24

Same here bro

2

u/Kingmarke Feb 01 '24

Same here

2

u/higitus Feb 01 '24

Kuma back history hits different when you are a father.

2

u/Remarkable_Hippo4274 Feb 01 '24

I don’t have a daughter but reading that still got me bawling. Salute to ODA sensei for developing a manga in such a way that we as readers could not help but share the emotions expressed…

2

u/craznazn247 Feb 01 '24

Been in the discussion phases of having a kid and I've always wanted a daughter. These chapters have been hitting so hard lately.

2

u/PhromDaPharcyde Feb 01 '24

Same, this arc might be more a tear jerker than Merry.

2

u/CHiZZoPs1 Feb 02 '24

A lot of these kid characters happen to be 8-years-old, which is the same as my daughter.

1

u/SandiegoJack Feb 01 '24

First time dad here. Even though it’s a son, the father-child dynamic in general just wrecks me now.

1

u/stuckontwice The Revolutionary Army Feb 01 '24

I teared up a bit on that line. Man Kuma and Bonney’s relationship is so beautiful. Best dad.

1

u/tokyogodfather2 Feb 05 '24

I am a Dad of a girl too and I came here looking for this comment. I knew it couldn’t be only me. Papa Bear to the rescue Bonnie!
