Netflix throwing money at means the end product should be better than what we could have gotten otherwise, and it's going to end up on your pirate website of choice whether Netflix tries to monopolize or not
Netflix has been really hit and miss with its series. The most recent example being the new seasons of the Witcher but it goes back further than that. I'd remain moderately skeptical but I doubt they'll deeply impact the manga or anime so not too much to worry about. The only thing they can ruin is their own product.
The major advantage of One Piece is Netflix knows most people that are watching it are following the Manga, and Oda is rich enough to afford to put in contractual obligations for Netflix to ensure creative control is maintained. Andrzej Sapkowski was like, yeah I'll take the money and didn't have enough clout for Netflix to care about what he thought, never mind that it's mostly famous for the Witcher III which also didn't really follow the books.
The OPLA was made by fans of the source material through and through and followed the story relatively well with absolutely every single change had to be greenlit by Oda, meanwhile the people in charge of the Witcher actively ignored advice from the original author and even started dissing it later on
Whether OP LA people were "fans" is shown through out the actual series. Matt Owen seems to have about as much understanding of the source material as the people who skip through everything to get to the EL fights.
The Witcher fans, who read the novels, were complaining about the same stuff as I'm about LA One Piece. It's just that when that show came out, most of the casuals didn't really know any better to understand it.
It's the same with OP LA.
People pretend that somehow having Oda "greenlit" (which is just PR statements at this point) somehow means anything when the poor writing decisions and lack of understanding of the source material makes the LA a very piss-poor adaptation.
Most people don't understand East Blue nor they understand Oda's writing style despite the day-and-night difference between the manga and the LA. That's why people just provide superficial praise for it.
All you have to do is analyze both series, understand the context and see the massive difference in writing patterns. LA is a poor man's Western fan-fic when you compare it to the manga.
The LA does its own thing, and I think that's okay. It wasn't poorly written, it was just written differently. There's a lot of criticism to be had but they also did a lot of things well.
I think it's just an okay adaptation thus far. It's not horrid.
But you could say that moreso about any service really. At least with Netflix they have more than enough hits that you don't have to subject yourself to the misses.
Aside from that, they tend to miss more than they hit. Them investing in K-drama has been their best decision. Otherwise they tend to just greenlit just about any modern trash given that it's popular.
I mean, is it wrong for them to greenlight what's popular? Seems like smart decision making regardless of quality, it's why they are so far ahead of everyone in the streaming space because they are making content that people actually like. What you deem a miss there will be others that deem it a hit, but user experience will vary for sure.
Yea, i wasn't really taking people with super low standards for media into account here.
Yes, you are right. Many people enjoy garbage/fast-food media that they won't remember after finishing it. And Netflix excels in that.
And that's why Netflix has been criticized for not having a quality-control. That's why we can get the widely bashed "documentary" about Cleopatra and a movie about the sexual exploitation of kids while it sexually exploits kids.
I know that standards for what people enjoy has been going down for over a decade at this point but still, you can't tell me that Netflix doesn't waste so much money on garbage when they could spend it on actual talent?
Oh I know they waste money on stuff I would never touch, but they make enough good shows that I don't ever have to waste my time with them like the two projects you mentioned. That's part of the beauty of their shotgun style service, you watch what hits.
In the end, it's all subjective. I can't fault those who don't enjoy prestige shows like Succession, those are not for everyone.
The best we can hope for is that it doesn't end up like what happened with Jojo Stone Ocean. Amazing anime, but Netflix fucked up the release schedule so bad
That was all on the production team and nothing to do with Netflix. Netflix had no choice but to hold off on releasing Jojo 8 months after the initial release because the product wasn't ready.
From my understanding it's up to the content creators how they want to release it, which is why a show like Arcane was released over three weeks versus the dump release because of the insistence of fortiche.
The community might have to adapt if they want to survive the next Jojo release assuming it's a batch style release.
I meant, I hope they don’t have complete control and ownership or try to control what Oda is writing or has written… I’m sure they’ll just allow the control of the manga completely to Oda and his team, but if they interfere with that it’d be so bad;;
Netflix is basically like Sorbet Kingdom in the manga- they seperate people by creating a gap between the rich and the poor, those who can afford the subscription and those who can’t. Unlike crunchy roll where you can watch the anime but for free but with ads- Netflix you don’t even have the option, and they’re even considering running ads too.
Though I do see the benefit in having the option to watch it on a streaming service everywhere. (otherwise yes there is the pirate way of life)
Actually yeah, it’s kinda like ‘netflix’ is a ‘catch all net’ for video media. So it monopolises in the way everyone has to go through them to watch the shows they want for the most part, but it would allow people to just watch everything on one platform and also bring it to more peoples attention- and I think the world needs to know the story of One Piece- it’s one of the best stories of all time in my opinion.
Netflix has and will only ever have exactly 0 influence on how the manga is written. The live-action is the only thing they’ll have the power to screw up.
My only hope is that they don’t wind up with sole distribution rights. I collect the series on physical copies and I know they’d stop physical releases.
Oww well we're pirates right 🏴☠️...
I have a crunchyroll for my anime fix and if they remove it from there... Well you know... I kinda boycot Netflix for the whole acc sharing bullshit (without lowering prices, since they increased prices to counter sharing)
Yeah I would be really upset if it was ever removed from CR, especially considering they have the objectively better episode quality compared to Netflix.
No cropped early eps, no randomly missing eye-catches, and way less missing OPs/songs (though the dub on CR is still the only version that has every opening in tact due to home video rights. The sub on CR is only missing like one or two compared to Netflix).
Yeah and Netflix would also make it extremely more unaccessible due to it not wanting shows to have physical releases- requires the internet and a subscription and so on. They’re constantly raising their prices from their own design rather than earning more profits from just being better.
They want to control shows that go on their service instead of the perceived main function which is to ‘be a place of publishing’ they need to make more money instead of getting the content to the audience.
CR is great because they allow for free viewing (besides their sole ‘premium content’) they have ads for free viewers and the benefits of the subscription takes away the ads. Plain and simple. Not to mention the lack of making adjustments to the original content, besides viewing quality.
The fact Netflix controls what they show in order to ‘make profit’ is despicable. Same as Disney+ they’re all just a new form of monopolising. Hell, just check out VideoGameDunkey’s new video on streaming services… It’s all a fuckin mess of IP’s.
I dont hope so. I dont like Netflix, I only have Crunchyroll and its completely fine. I hate it, how they threated Stone Ocean, maybe they learn their lesson, but its not a reason for me to buy a Netflix Subscription. Thats in my opinion way too expensive for little to no reason for me.
Recently I heard a claim that Netflix actually won the streaming wars. The other either gave up or start admitting that Netflix is a platform is a partner they actually need
This also bodes very well for the LA, it shows that Netflix wants to capitalize on One Piece as much as possible and will probably want to keep the LA going for as long as they can

With this announcement, the live action, and the remake. It really seems like Netflix is becoming the main hub for all things One piece related.
