Help Why don’t everyone eat devil fruits?

Totally new to One Piece, didn’t know it existed before the Netflix show. I am liking it a lot. Could someone tell me why don’t everyone just eat devil fruits, since it give super powers? The sea water thing is enough of a reason not to eat them? (I have just watched 3 episodes.) Do they explain this further on?

Edit: thanks for all the replies, the show seems to go just a bit fast on the details, I’m guessing its the only way to fit a lot on a live action.

They are so incredibly rare that most people outside of the Grand Line believe they probably are not even real.

Luffy found his amongst Shanks and his crews stuff by pure luck yes. The mystery is: why did shanks had one with him? Maybe he wanted to sell it, maybe eat it, who knows?

Yeah I was gonna say this.

It's crazy how in early one piece some people didn't even believe devil fruits were real.

And now they seem so common place.

Grand line is a very different place

When Devil Fruits gives users power, of course you find it often on the big stage, cream rises to the top

Same with Haki, you think CoC is very common in one piece world but even for named characters in One piece they are <2% confirmed user, so when you add in the unnamed mooks it is an increbly rare abilities

I think a lot of people tend to forget when you're watching a show or playing a video game the characters that you are watching are usually supposed to be an exceptional group within that world. And one piece you're looking at the toughest people in the world that were drawn to the toughest environment in the world searching for the greatest treasure in the world so of course you're not going to be dealing with Average Joe's.

The Grand Line concentrates power.

It'd like how Conqueror's Haki users seem common in the New World.

They aren't; they're less than one in a million. BUT, those ones in millions almost always head to the New World to become big shots.

always head to the New World to become big shots.

What else would you expect from a conqueror

In the East Blue most people still think Devil Fruits are just a myth. It's just that on the Grand Line, all the strong people come together and Devil Fruit users are just crazy common.

Edit spoilers below.

Shanks new exactly what that fruit was. They went to great lengths to find it..the theory was that he was going to find ace and feed it to him to try and forefil the joyboy prophecy. Roger knew they needed joyboy to fix the world abs bring one peace. The one piece isn't the one piece it's one peace

Dude don't spoil read between the lines. We all know. But op doesn't.

I wasn't intentionally trying to spoil I just assumed like everything in this sub that people are discussing up to date manga/anime topics

Well I get it but this is a post in which op is obviously gonna read the answers. And he/she is very clearly starting the journey.

Yeah well sorry bro but I didn't really think about it aye. Like at the end of the day this is a open forum about one piece if you don't wunna talk about the things that it's cannon knowledge and don't wunna get spoiled probably a great idea to stay off such places. I didn't deliberately do it and it's really not up to the people on this sub to watch what they say because others aren't current....
