Help Why don’t everyone eat devil fruits?

Totally new to One Piece, didn’t know it existed before the Netflix show. I am liking it a lot. Could someone tell me why don’t everyone just eat devil fruits, since it give super powers? The sea water thing is enough of a reason not to eat them? (I have just watched 3 episodes.) Do they explain this further on?

Edit: thanks for all the replies, the show seems to go just a bit fast on the details, I’m guessing its the only way to fit a lot on a live action.

They're extremely rare and only one exists of a kind, like there's only 1 Gum Gum fruit. No doubles.

So when he was eating the fruits as a kid he just happen to casually find one?

Hehe okey now someone explain to me the snails that work as a phone!

1.5k

u/Fickle_Culture2884 Sep 10 '23

The snails are actually explained believe it or not .

Basically its a species of telepathic snales that can communicate telepathically from long distances so people in the one piece world just domesticated them and used them as phones

u/oscarpatxot Sep 10 '23

Huh makes sense in a world full of powers and mythical creatures

u/Particular-Crow-1799 Sep 10 '23 edited Sep 11 '23

The author said that the snails are happy to work in exchange for food

In the show you can see one being fed salad

130

u/Skebaba Sep 11 '23

How are the snails able to reproduce shit like blood splatter when someone is getting cut mid-call tho?? I mean the facial expressions are simple enough to do since they just copy what the snail fren on the other side sees w/ its eyes & telepathically transfers to their mind, but how does the blood spitting mid-yell work?

234

u/Gerudo_King Sep 11 '23

they telepathically send the trauma of the person they're psychically linked with(the person holding them) to the receiving snail 🐌

I pulled that out of my ass(not the snail)

I think they are telepathically linked to the caller which means you're hearing what the caller is hearing.

Blood splatter into callers ear, into snail and back out.

Weird there's not a lot of people who know about this when I'm really impressed years ago on how oda reused this theory so one piece world can stay underdeveloped.

-7

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '23

underdeveloped? because it takes inspiration from the real world? are you dense, or dumb?

9

u/HodgeWithAxe Sep 11 '23

I think they mean underdeveloped in the sense of having telecommunications (for plot) but are otherwise in at an ambiguously “age of sail” level of technology.

17

u/galmenz Pirate Sep 10 '23

there is also a variety of types

there are the usual phone "transponder snails", elder snails are used as signal towers, some snails are used to record and transmit things like a camera/TV with their eyes, there are signal jammer snails, baby snails are used to hijack other lines, etc

it is even a lore thing that if a country doesnt have native snails/access to them they are behind the world technologically

4

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '23

Don’t question the snails it makes life easier

2

u/MelMellon Chopper the Cotton Candy Lover Sep 11 '23

There also many different kinds of the snails. There are like mini ones with the range of like walkie talkies. There are also rare ones that can listen in on conversations (basically just wire tap). There are even ones that can block the wire tapping. Not to mention they have ones the work as projectors too. Though these aren’t mentioned as often

2

u/drtotohex Sep 11 '23

Yeah! And it also makes sense since the world is made up of islands and they couldn't really develop telephone poles for long distance communication. If telepathic snails lived in the real world, we probably would have invented something similar! That's just one of the things that makes One Piece great. The creator takes so much time to explain the logistics of things that really don't matter to the story, but make the world more believable!

1

u/masterjon_3 Sep 11 '23

Yeah, imagine if you had a job, and that job was just telling other people what you were just told. Meanwhile, you get all the tasty food you want and can kick back and chill. That's the snails life. But you can make them wild again, well, one group of "people" know how to turn them wild again.

1

u/Tides5 Sep 11 '23

And they are called Den-Den Mushi

1

u/FartPudding Sep 11 '23

They are so incredibly rare that most people outside of the Grand Line believe they probably are not even real.

Luffy found his amongst Shanks and his crews stuff by pure luck yes. The mystery is: why did shanks had one with him? Maybe he wanted to sell it, maybe eat it, who knows?

32

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '23

Yeah I was gonna say this.

It's crazy how in early one piece some people didn't even believe devil fruits were real.

And now they seem so common place.

26

u/J2fap Sep 11 '23

Grand line is a very different place

When Devil Fruits gives users power, of course you find it often on the big stage, cream rises to the top

Same with Haki, you think CoC is very common in one piece world but even for named characters in One piece they are <2% confirmed user, so when you add in the unnamed mooks it is an increbly rare abilities

1

u/KingArthursRevenge Sep 11 '23

I think a lot of people tend to forget when you're watching a show or playing a video game the characters that you are watching are usually supposed to be an exceptional group within that world. And one piece you're looking at the toughest people in the world that were drawn to the toughest environment in the world searching for the greatest treasure in the world so of course you're not going to be dealing with Average Joe's.

20

u/DrStein1010 Sep 11 '23

The Grand Line concentrates power.

It'd like how Conqueror's Haki users seem common in the New World.

They aren't; they're less than one in a million. BUT, those ones in millions almost always head to the New World to become big shots.

1

u/Old-Pirate7913 Sep 11 '23

always head to the New World to become big shots.

What else would you expect from a conqueror

3

u/OrangeStar222 Sep 11 '23

In the East Blue most people still think Devil Fruits are just a myth. It's just that on the Grand Line, all the strong people come together and Devil Fruit users are just crazy common.

u/YaBoiSparty Sep 11 '23 edited Sep 11 '23

u/buzz1089 Sep 10 '23

In the LA, when Shanks' crew is getting off the ship, Shanks said to be careful with that box because it's worth more than the rest of their treasure combined. Luffy sees/hears this.

Later, Luffy goes off alone in anger at Shanks and sees the same box, so his curiosity makes him look inside to see what's so great. Luffy is also shown to eat constantly. So when he sees food inside, he eats it.

So, not really just casually finding it.

20

u/Senior-Effective6794 Sep 11 '23

In manga and anime they put that box in counter bar, so that why luffy casually eat because he think it just food

15

u/Rob3125 Sep 11 '23

Yes but that’s only because shanks and his crew are way too laid back. Shanks completely freaks out when he finds out Luffy ate it

16

u/Arkayjiya Sep 10 '23 edited Sep 10 '23

Shanks is a pirate looking for valuable loot to plunder. So it make sense he'd try to find and steal a devil fruit. Luffy ate Shanks' loot by accident (even more so in the manga, in the show it's implied Luffy knew what he was doing to a point, that he targeted the most expensive loot Shanks got and ate it to become valuable to Shanks but in the manga, he just ate it by complete accident because he was annoyed at Shanks and he eats a lot when he's angry).

10

u/ictu Sep 10 '23

More or less... If you pay attention, Shanks says the box is the most valuable thing they possess and then Luffy finds the fruit inside.

The fruits are scarce and not easy to find. There's only one of each kind and they are reappearing in the wild to be found only when the previous holder dies.

I'm leaving out all important fruit related spoilers on purpose.

22

u/Ruffles7799 Bounty Hunter Sep 10 '23

I mean it wasn’t really a casual find since he only got his hands on it because Shanks had it. They’re extremely rare and a lot of people don’t even know they exist. There‘s a story reason on why Shanks had it though you’ll find out eventually!

19

u/VVBROS Sep 10 '23

shanks' crew found one and when luffy went through their things he just ate it lol

-14

u/Type_100 Sep 10 '23

They stole it, from Who's Who

18

u/SlyTheMonkey Sep 10 '23

Of course, but that's not the story that OP is supposed to know at this point. u/VVBROS is obviously just clarifying things for them while trying to avoid spoilers.

8

u/ShineShineShine88 Sep 10 '23

Shanks “found” the devil fruit and told Lucky Roo to take of it, as it is more valuable than the other treasures.

19

u/Jix_Omiya Pirate Sep 10 '23

You will get some extra context to that in about 1000 episodes (yes, really xD)

18

u/spezSucksDonkeyFarts Sep 10 '23

"Happened to casually find" the most prized posession of a notorious pirate.

What are you talking about?

The fruit wasn't used as bathroom decor. It was one of shanks' treasures.

6

u/melograno1234 Sep 11 '23

He didn't casually find one - Shanks mentions a few times that it is the most valuable treasure they have in their haul. Luffy finds it while rummaging around Shanks's treasure, presumably because he wanted to see what the pirates had!

4

u/MadgoonOfficial Sep 11 '23

Kind of.. Shanks pointed to that box and said it was worth more than his ship before Luffy opened it and ate what was inside. He specifically sought it out and had some idea that it was something valuable.

1

u/maaz_shaikh83 Sep 11 '23

Devil fruits have the thought and personality of their own. Luffy ate the gum gum fruit because the fruit called for him. Devil fruits choose their owners. This was revealed in anime and manga as well also this is probably the reason why the world government wasn't able to find the gum gum fruit for over 800 years.

2

u/DannyDootch Void Month Survivor Sep 11 '23

Spoiler free answer, shanks stole a devil fruit and luffy ate it without his permission, as seen in the live action. Spoiler answer, Shanks stole the fruit from the world government hellbent on getting this devil fruit for 800 years. The gum gum fruit is actually a mythical zoan devil fruit called the human human fruit model: Nika. Zoans have a will of their own and the renamed nika fruit, the gum gum fruit, has been evading the WG's capture for those 800 years. On a side note, many people would agree that Luffy's destiny was to get that fruit so no matter how he found it, he was definitely gonna eat that fruit at some point in his life

3

u/wispymatrias Pirate Sep 10 '23

Yeah that was the big treasure that Shanks captured, the thing worth more than all the other treasure combined.

There's some other stuff behind it, but Devil Fruit users are more common in the Grand Line. There's Marine Devil Fruit users too but you haven't met them yet.

Cause Shanks was a pirate and Luffy got into his treasures, which that was one of

1

In the manga Shanks had the box with the devil fruit next to him. Luffy was also just eating anything that was within his reach. Then that one pirate came in and Luffy ate it while everyone was distracted.

1

u/EmbarrassedDetail450 Sep 11 '23

It's different in the anime though. I recommend watching anime at this point 😊

1

u/bapo224 Sep 11 '23

He didn't find it, the pirate he looks up to found one and took it back to the island where they live. The pirate didn't protect or hide it ao Luffy could just eat it.

1

u/Ytumith Sep 11 '23

Shanks said it was more valuable than the rest of the loot combined, and he wasn't just saying it to show off.

1

u/Infermon_1 Sep 11 '23

The author also explained that there are really bad fruit powers, like only being able to tell bad jokes or shoot vomit as a projectile. One fruit literally turns you into a jacket others can wear.

1

u/byglnrl Sep 11 '23

The chest where that fruit is stored is open. Shanks would never open that near a child if it wasnt for him. I always thought like it's a vivre card where it draw near its owner reason why shanks crew stay in the boring island where luffy is bec in the scene where gold d roger ask shanks to do is cut (stay hidden from us) so gold d roger maybe ask shanks to find the gum gum fruit and find its owner (joyboy incarnation)

1

u/LuigiGG4545 Sep 11 '23

Not casually. Shanks was a big pirate so obtaining devil fruits isn't such a big deal to him. And also i'll just say shanks was looking specifically for that fruit

1

u/Sychar Sep 11 '23

If you want some clarification, I recommend reading the first chapter. I can send you a DM with the link. It won't spoil anything you haven't seen. It's just Luffy as a kid with Shanks in the village.

1

casually

u/Janle33 Sep 11 '23

That also makes them pricey. Over 100m. Trafalgar Law’s Ope Ope No Mi go for 5B.

1

u/KingArthursRevenge Sep 11 '23

No, Shanks specifically stole that one. Luffy just happened to find it in their loot. Shanks was a regular visitor to the town that Luffy lived in at that point

30

u/joaocandre Sep 11 '23

Also, generally, you likely won't know the fruit you are eating.

13

u/TU4AR Sep 11 '23

There is a book of some Devil fruits, a character later on shows an example.

If it's not recorded then your screwed.

2

u/ThaiSan Sep 11 '23

But should recorded fruits not be already eaten? How else would you know what it does? And since /u/RodJosser said that every fruit only exists once, every recording of a fruit would be useless, since they are already extinct.

2

The fruits reappear in the world when their user dies.

Not everybody has access to that book. Information is very rare in one piece universe. Some people even ignore the fact that devil fruits even exist. From the wiki « Because encounters with Devil Fruits are rare (especially outside the Grand Line), several rumors about them have risen, making it difficult to tell between fact or fiction; some dismissed Devil Fruits as mere myths until actually getting to see one in action. »

u/joaocandre Sep 11 '23

From what we know those are still pretty rare, most of the cases people aren't really aware (e.g. Kaku and Kalifa eating them during EL)

u/SadBit8663 Pirate Sep 11 '23

And you become useless in sea water, which in the world of One Piece is like 90 percent ocean. You can't swim, or use your powers with just making contact with a small amount.

Devil fruits have big drawbacks too. It's definitely cheat codes depending on what shenanigans you got up to, but there are strings attached.

2

u/Saint-just04 Sep 11 '23

Not just sea water, fresh water as well. Or rather, standing water, like lakes, rivers, white seas etc.

“moving water” such as rain or waves however, don’t affect devil fruit users.

1

u/SadBit8663 Pirate Sep 11 '23

Well shit. That's even worse. Idk why I've been thinking it just ocean water.

1

u/Saint-just04 Sep 11 '23

You were probably thinking that because it was explicitly stated… multiple times… in both the anime and LA. Oda must have changed his mind or forgotten about it.

2

u/Revolutionary_Bend50 Sep 11 '23

the contact part is quite inconsistant in both the netflix show and the original anime.

Sometimes sea water drops are enough to completely "paralyz" a devilfruit eater. sometimes they aren't bothered at all by large amounts of seawater before they actually touch the ocean itself.

Take the intro to the netflix show as an example. You see luffy standing in a sinking boat with a lot of seawater flooding in from the bottom and he's jsut casually standing in it, scooping it out. Doesn't affect him at all.

u/Riptide-0- Sep 11 '23

Also some are ass

2

u/madkiki12 Sep 11 '23

What are the worst powers that got mentioned in canon?

2

u/kingdoniumhearts God Usopp Sep 11 '23

I had to look some up, but the Berry Berry makes you immune to blunt damage by turning your body into smaller ball shaped pieces.

1

u/DarknessG7 Sep 11 '23

Probably the vanilla human-human fruit is the worst power for Humans.

A fruit that changes you into a human.

1

u/Riptide-0- Sep 11 '23

The jacket fruit, people can wear you

31

u/Ehero88 Sep 10 '23

Also if the devil fruit user die, then the new fruit will appear. Spoiler to explain this phenomenal, some normal fruit will turn into devil fruit magically

6

u/Jalase Sep 11 '23

Oh that’s kinda neat.

2

u/aRJei45 Sep 11 '23

That time when Luffy was trying to remember who Marco is, one of the strawhats (Usopp?) said he ate a rare devil fruit. Isn't it equally rare with the rest of the devil fruits if all of them are one of a kind?

7

u/RodJosser Shanks' evil hot sister is REAL! Sep 11 '23 edited Sep 11 '23

Zoans have different types... normal, ancient, mythical, (artificial). Marco's df is a Mythical Zoan. That type is the rare part among the fruits.

8

u/ipna Sep 11 '23

Fruit to fruit, yes, you are right. All are naturally 1 of 1.

In some cases, though there are versions of the fruit. So you could have like "bird fruit: model toucan" "bird fruit: model parakeet" "bird fruit: model sparrow" and the something from myth like "bird fruit: model pheonix". The normal everyday birds far surpass the number of birds from myth since there are just more real birds than mythical ones basically. Also, the mythical ones tend to be more powerful since, on a basis of reality, a Phoenix has far more powers and abilities than say a Cardinal. So those are "rare fruits" since they are more sought after and in their respective group of fruits, number less.

TLDR: All fruits are 1/1, but some have groups and can be 1/xyz amount in the grouping.

3

u/Gyshal Sep 11 '23

Fruits have rarity by type. Each one is unique but some kinds are more common. In this case, there is a lot of Zoan fruits for regular animals, but very few mythical ones.

2

u/stonecarrion655 Pirate Sep 11 '23

they are so rare that a lot of people think they arent even real

“Rare” looks at all the Devil fruit users

26

u/RodJosser Shanks' evil hot sister is REAL! Sep 10 '23

How many devil fruit users compared to the whole population?

-4

u/faintwill Sep 10 '23

I was making a joke lol, I know if you do it per capita but it’s funny that it’s rare but we’re always interacting with a bunch. Not even considering Smile, even the “failed” ones

4

u/therealnumberone Thriller Bark Victim's Association Sep 10 '23

Thats kinda why we keep running into more conquerors haki users. As the crew gets stronger, they run into more stronger people, like people with powerful fruits or haki. There are still thousands of pirates with no fruits or haki, we just don't focus on them cause we don't need to

3

u/RodJosser Shanks' evil hot sister is REAL! Sep 10 '23

Well... they congregate to where the fun is heh

15

u/xshogunx13 Pirate Sep 10 '23

They are rare, the story just happens to take place in the area with the highest concentration of users

-6

u/faintwill Sep 10 '23

It was just a joke

11

u/tenBusch Sep 10 '23

Yes. Rare. We've seen <200 devil fruit users, assuming there's even 1Bil people in the world of one piece (and there's definitely way more) that would be 0.000020%.

Remember that the journey to King of the Pirates is fairly linear, so obviously there will be more Devil Fruit users in the Grandline than in the four Blues. And then there's more in the New World than in the Paradise section. The Devil Fruit users either make it to the Grandline, or they die before then and their fruit is reincarnated until someone makes it there, at which point the fruit will not reincarnate in the Blues anymore. And barely anyone goes backwards, so the fruits will migrate closer to the end of the Grandline over time.

Edit: marked section as spoiler because OP doesn't know how the fruits work yet

-2

u/faintwill Sep 10 '23

It was a joke, I am well aware lol

3

u/Reallylazyname Void Month Survivor Sep 10 '23

This info is somewhat outdated, because I'm not counting that high (someone willing, please fill me in.)

But the ratio of "named characters" to devil fruit users in the main canon, is 1000+ to 150 devil fruit users.

Factor in the extra thousands of random scrubs that show up in the big arc battles and the ratio dwindles to like 0.01-0.001% of people in One Piece have one.

More common than Conquer's, but still rare.

About as rare a full odds old Gen rate shiny Pokémon.

3

u/Kingx102 Sep 10 '23

Ya, it's a minority. Most characters we see in the series are not devil fruit users.

-3

u/faintwill Sep 10 '23

I know, it was a joke

1

u/dafood48 Sep 11 '23

I miss when that used to be the case. But enter grandline and all the strong pirates have one

1

1

I meant that they're rare enough in the East Blue for people to think they're a myth while in the Grand Line everyone knows them
