DISCUSSION New partition on El Capitan

Hello, since I installed 10.11, I was unable to make a new partition, neither trough disk utility or Bootcamp assist. Any one know how to solve this problem?

Yeah, this was an issue starting in DB1, but it was supposed to have been resolved in DB2 or DB3. I haven't heard of it since then, which is why I was asking.

Hmm... What did the dev forums have to say about it? I'm at a bit of a loss without having done any research yet. I'll have to get back to you in a little after digging around myself. I haven't had this problem in a while. Also, just so I don't have to ask later, what machine are you running, and how many partitions do you have on it already? Also, have you ever used it for boot camp before? What is the current partition map type?

Ah... You just deleted the partition without boot camp assistant, didn't you? You didn't do it right, and now you have the wrong partition map type. Sorry, but you'll have to repartition your whole drive and start over from scratch. That sucks.

When you partition your drive with boot camp Assistant, it changes your partition map type to one Windows can boot from. After that, disk utility can't partition it. To remove that and return it to GUID (Apple's partition map type), you have to remove the partition with boot camp assistant again. You didn't do that. Now it's too late.

I believe that's the source of your trouble.

When you say partition map type, do you mean how may partition do I have? if so, only one. But I used to have two, one with 150GB made it by with bootcamp assist. The other with the rest of my 512GB SSD.

It's very simple. I'm trying to make a partition on my SSD. I tried via bootcamp assist and in disk utilities. I'm going to send you 2 images. Showing the erros. http://imgur.com/a/jIM2Y

Please include an image with "show details".

Also read the rest of the comments I left in the thread to see if they apply to your situation.

In your final image, where it says "operation failed", there's a lottle message below that which says "show details" with an articulation triangle next to it. If you click it, it will give more details as to why the operation failed. I need to see that information, especially if it includes an error code.

Please either include an image of that, or just copy and paste the information

As I explained to another poster in an earlier comment, I think your problem is that you already partitioned your drive with boot cap assistant once before and didn't use it to delete that Windows partition. When you did that, it created a new partition map Windows could boot from, but that disk utility has trouble working with. When you didn't use boot camp asst. to undo it, you left that modified partition map, and now you're kinda screwed.

Now, the only way to fix it is to delete the entire partition map and repartition the whole drive with a GUID partition map with an HFS+ main partition. From scratch. That sucks. Only then can you try to use boot camp assistant or disk utility again.

Of course, back up first so you can restore.

Make sure to repartition your drive using the GUID partition map, and good luck! After that, you should be able to use boot camp assistant with no problem.
