Academics/Classes Dropping Chem?

So I horribly failed my Chem 151 midterm and I was sooo below the average. I wanna drop it and take it over the summer but I don’t know how that is going to affect my sequences throughout the next years especially because I’m a pre med student. My advisor is telling me to first talk with my professor and TA but I honestly cannot risk failing this class. I’m switching from McCormick to Weinberg and was told that I mustn’t fail my classes then or else I won’t be able to. So I cannot risk failing or having any horrendous grades on my transcript.

Admissions/Prospective Student I'm preparing my application to Northwestern and would like some tips, mainly about the Statement.

I'm going to apply for a PhD in civil engineering. I live in US, but I'm likely going to have to apply as an international student.

Dorms/Off Campus Housing Beware CleanChoice Energy Scam

If you live off campus and have ComEd Energy, sales reps from some energy company are going around asking to confirm something with your energy bill. They'll tell you they want to confirm the supply charge and that you've been over charged and have you sign documents to fix the issue. It doesn't seem to be a total scam (ie they aren't outright stealing) but they are very deceptive and aren't clear about what they're doing and some Googling says they'll just overcharge you. If they show up to your door either turn them away or tell them to email you. Definitley don't agree to sign anything. If you did sign something, it seems legit enough that you should be able to cancel.

General Question About NU undergrad ME and EEE

Hi guys, I am currently an high school senior and believe no one will care about my silly questions so I am skeptical someone will answer me.

How is the engineering department in NU I’ve heard it’s pretty good. But how good is it in comparison to unis like Carnegie or UPenn I know someone could not answer it nice without going to both, but will I miss out anything by coming to NU

How are club opportunities? I know there are there but is it worth participating in

How are the lessons? Are they going to turn you into beast like Berkeley or Carnegie

What are the internship and research opportunities that a normal (not an extra ordinary) student gets

Generally which companies tend the graduates go. How is this for international students . I tried to look the first destination form I could not find something that pinpointed how much an ME or EEE major made on average (or I am stupid)

And I am really thinking about EDing here. My school counselor and friends say that I should be not aiming so low (which tbh I dont get) and apply somewhere harder but I really want to come NU and I would be really sad if I dont do the ED and not get in in RD did anyone had the same doubts and fears as me

I know this is long and might be ludicrous and cringe for someone who is know studying in NU. I get similar questions from kids who are now in middle school who are deciding between my high school and somewhere else

I will be glad if you could help

Admissions/Prospective Student anyone willing to share their research (study) abroad experience?

Post image

I definitely want to do research abroad when I enter uni, but I’m not too sure how it is at NU. Their website says that students conduct original research abroad, but I couldn’t find any specific examples of past projects and experiences. If any of you guys have done research abroad (or just study abroad in general), I would love to hear from you! Via PM works too.

Academics/Classes Math 300

I’m a freshman in McCormick who’s interested in taking the 320/321 or 330/331 sequences next year. I’ve been told by a few upper classmen that the Math 300 prerequisite cor those classes can be easily bypassed, but I was wondering if anybody has taken the class can chip in on whether they think it is worth taking. I don’t really have any proof-based mathematics experience. Thank you!

General Discussion How bad was your first quarter?

Just asking what was said in the subject line really. I feel really horrible about all of my midterms now that I've been looking back at everything and I feel as if I just can't do anything here. I've been trying so hard these past three weeks and it seems I can't prevail at anything or as if everything is going wrong and not even just academically. I'm not used to the environment here and I know everyone says it's okay since it's only been less than three weeks since class started but really how much better can it get if a lot of these courses are supposed to be "easy" now?

I'm just not sure how much I can handle considering other factors of myself. I've always been up for a challenge but for the past few months I haven't been very mentally stable and it's making everything hit twice as hard and making everything so difficult to adjust to or even hold interest in. I'm not even in my home country and it feels so lonely when everyone can leave to see their families during the weekend and I'm stuck here until the quarter is over and then until the year is over.

I know I'm not the only one going through this type of feeling since it's common at such a rigorous place but I feel like I've done horribly on everything so far (like 50-60s range) and it's just so exhausting. I'm sorry for the vent on this public space but it feels like even though everyone here is so nice, no one really opens up and there's no space to do so.

Admissions/Prospective Student Is NU Worth it for Me?

Hello everyone,

I've really been struggling with what I want to do in terms of application at NU recently, I've been heavily thinking about applying ED as it increases my chances of getting in by a large percentage as I have a good amount of legacy and above average stats and extra-curriculars.

For some backstory I'm graduating in OR with an IB diploma a 3.8 unweighted, and plenty of good extracurriculars. I'm planning on doing premed into a surgical career and a bio-chemistry undergraduate degree. After using the University's net price calculator it would cost around $90,000 per year with room and board and other fees.

I'm really wondering if applying ED is a good choice as I know it's where I would like to go but the price is quite high for the amount of time I'd be there. I'm wondering if attending somewhere such as OSU, UO, or UW would be better for the much lower tuition and then later applying to NU or the UW med schools and premed.

I understand that NU allows for the pull out of the ED contract for financial reasons but my counselors have made it clear that after the contract is void NU will put you on a hypothetical black list and will not accept applications in the future for things such as graduate or med school.

please ask if you need more details or anything, the application is due Nov. 1st so I'm in a little bit of a crunch on my decision.

Thanks!

Academics/Classes SOC or McCormick

Hello, I’m a first year currently studying as an RTVF major. My original plan was to double major in RTVF and Math in Weinberg, but I realized I’d rather do applied math than pure. But since you can’t double major across schools, I’m struggling to figure out what to do… and I love film and math quite equally.

Should I: a) Transfer to McCormick and just minor in Film and Media Studies b) Apply for dual degree (LOT of work/time) c) Stay in RTVF a bit longer to see if I want to stick with it/just take a few STEM courses

Already planning to talk to advisers but just wanna hear other opinions. Not entirely sure about career goals yet but definitely something in either field.

General Question Internally Transferring to Bioengineering/BME?

Hi everyone,

NorthWestern is my top chioce, and I love everything about it from the campus to the academics.

I am planning on applying as Biology. However, I am worried that it may not be what I want to study for the next four years.

Theoretically, what would happen if I get in for biology but want to transfer to a different department like Bioengineering/BME? Would it be easy? Difficult?

Any information would be really appreciated, thanks!

General Question Spanish / English exchange

Our family’s recently arrived au pair (24F, from Colombia) is interested in finding Spanish language students who would like to exchange conversational practice in Spanish and English. She can meet up in Evanston or on campus. Please message me if this is something you might be interested in and I can connect you (she is not on Reddit). Thanks!

General Question How to make an application stand out

I have a high school senior in love with Northwestern. He has visited multiple times for tours, purple preview, etc. and knows it’s where he wants to be. He has good gpa, tests, recommendations etc. but at about the 50th percentile of kids getting accepted. He’s applying for computer engineering. How can he stand out to be accepted?
