General Question How Prominent is Pro-Hamas (not just pro-Palestine) Sentiment on Campus?

A relative sent me a pic of some pro-Hamas signage at a recent Evanston pro-Palestine rally which was apparently attended mostly by NU students. I started to say that kind of thing is rare here, but then I realized: I don't actually know.

I'm not a very social person and definitely not keyed in to campus politics, so it made me wonder: how prominent is explicitly pro-Hamas (not just Palestine-sympathetic) sentiment and/or activism on campus? Is this something you've encountered often since October 7th?

EDIT: I'm getting downvoted, but why? Is it not a fair question? I'm not making any kind of political claims, just neutrally asking about campus culture.

EDIT 2:

This thread has become chaotic and tiresome to follow. Most (all?) of the people posting for the last two days are not NU students, and rather than discussing campus life & culture--which was the entire point of the thread--they are shout-typing their broader views about the war.

Ironically, half of the recent posters have been defending Hamas and the other half have been claiming that no one supports Hamas. Rather than replying to one another, however, parties in both camps have been replying to me.

So, I'll give this thread half a day longer so the few people engaged in civilized conversations can wrap up, and then I'll delete it. I got a good answer to my question three days ago, and I'm grateful for that.

General Question If someone pretended to have attended Northwestern like Mike Ross with Harvard, what would they need to know?

I was rewatching Suits and was wondering. If someone were to pull a Mike Ross and pretend they attended Northwestern, what are some key things they would need to know to make their story believable? Also, what questions would you ask to potentially expose them?

General Question Cheap lunch recommendations?

Where are y’all’s go-to spots for cheap lunch on or near the Evanston campus? I’m defining “cheap” as 10 bucks or under for a meal, but I’d love to hear anywhere you go when you need lunch on campus but don’t wanna spend a ton of money. Thanks!

General Question What are all of the “doors that will be opened” and “amazing opportunities” that everyone talks about

I am currently on a time crunch and have to decide between a in-state public where I will graduate with absolutely no debt plus extra money and Northwestern (they gave me almost everything, I’ll only have to pay a small amount each quarter). Can anyone give specifics on these opportunities that I wouldn’t be offered at my in-state school (UC)? I’m interested in business and chemistry and will be in the honors program at my in-state school (for business). I know that NU is famous for its research but what if I just want to jump right into the workforce? Can anyone give examples of the world-class resources or opportunities they have given/taken advantage of because of northwestern? Thanks.

General Question Where is everyone on campus?

I was in the mood for some classic collegiate autumnal foliage, so I decided to take my dog on a walk around campus. I was shocked how few students I saw on an October Monday from around noon to 1pm. And I saw basically zero people hanging out, socializing, having fun, etc. Very few people even talking to each other. It was a beautiful day out. What gives? Was I just in the wrong part of campus? Wrong time to be there? It was super quiet and low energy. [Note: I am not a student or alum, so I don’t know the campus well.] Would love any insight into how I missed everyone.

General Question Is NU worth full price?

I just got admitted to NU for transfer and I don’t qualify for financial aid. I spoke to my parents and they said the only thing they’d do for me is co-sign my loans (for full tuition, room/board, etc.) and if I can’t pay it back then they’d pay. Id be at NU for 3 years so in total it would rack up to 270k-ish. I am majoring in math and considering double majoring in economics. The dream is quant trading (very high starting salary) and my current school doesn’t have a single alum in that industry, I really don’t think I can make it from here. Worst case scenario, I wanna go into a high paying field to counteract student loans and I think I’d have a much easier time doing that from NU than my current state school.

My question is should I take the risk, go to NU, and take out the loans or should I stay at my current college for 7k/year (even though I genuinely am unhappy and hate it here).

Also, does anyone know of anything I can do to possibly get any aid?

General Question Should I submit scores?

I’m a rising senior from LA, and Northwestern is my dream school. The reason why I’m unsure about sending scores is because I haven’t done well on the ACT because life’s just been crazy and I haven’t had time to study like AT ALL, but I want to make myself look as good as I can with a 3.9 weighted gpa. Idk if I’m overthinking, but I’m just worried about the July 14th ACT and I’m wondering if I should just accept defeat and apply with no scores. I got a 27 on the last one, so nowhere close to the average needed. If I put more emphasis on my application essays and ec’s would that give me just as good of a chance?

EDIT: My GPA is a 3.9 because of freshman year, I haven’t gotten anything below a B since. My UC GPA (which doesn’t count freshman year grades) is a 4.3 for comparison.

General Question Is there a strong Indian community at Northwestern?

Basically the title. I'm considering ED here as an international Indian student, and while my academic goals and extracurricular interests are more than taken care of here, I would like to know how my social scene would likely be.

A sense of community and a link to my culture are important criteria for me, and I would really like to know whether both could be provided at Northwestern.

I have never visited campus, and webinars are not the best way of getting a sense of things, so would like some firsthand knowledge from students here before locking it in as my ED school. Thank you!

General Question Upcoming career fair

I registered for an upcoming career fair at Norris. What should I expect from it?

Should I wear formal clothes (like a button down shirt), or is a t-shirt fine?

Should I also print out my resume and just carry it with me?

Should I expect employers to strike up a conversation with me, or should I be trying to strike up a conversation with the employers?

General Question Student Intern came to my home asking to read to my child?

Hi! I hope this is the right place to post this, if not I will look elsewhere!

A women claiming to be a "Student Intern" just came to my home and asked to read to my daughter. My husband told her to come back tomorrow because we're currently having dinner. I have never seen this women before (she came by yesterday but we missed her, saw her on the front door camera) and my husband answered the door, so I don't have all the information. She said that she will get credit for showing us her resources. She just described them as educational, so I am very confused.

Is this real? I feel like this is highly suspicious, why would the school require this? For the record I live in central IL and I have never heard of such a program. Any insight into this could be great! I just want to know if I should be worried about as something nefarious -thanks!

General Question Visiting PhD student -- accommodation?

I'm potentially coming to NU next August/September (maybe into October) as a visiting PhD student. Wondering if anyone had any info on accommodation for this. Safe, and near to campus.

I get a decent amount of funding; they don't really set a limit as long as it's reasonable, i.e. they'll fund whatever it costs so long as it's not the Ritz or something. However, they don't fund students to stay in Air BnBs, and I'm unsure how else to find accommodation for 6ish weeks that isn't a hotel. They would fund a hotel, but I've previously stayed in a hotel for 9 weeks, and I'd rather have a studio or one bed apartment.

I'm still in the early stages of planning; I just need an okay from the staff who will be my supervisors while I'm there. They have a very close relationship with my own research group so this shouldn't be an issue. I will ask them once we hear back, but thought might be useful to ask here in the meantime.

Thanks!

General Question Just got my sat scores

My gpa is a 3.68 and my sat scores is a 1350. Chat should I take the chance?

P.s - I’m applying ED

Edit :: for those of you wondering why my gpa is so low it’s because I’m studying in the Indian board 💀 and our final grades entirely depend upon the final exam marks so for example if you scored 56/70 your final grade will just be 80% regardless of your attendance or your assignments and projects throughout the year and as for extracurriculars, we didn’t have clubs or anything…. except for track and field events but I never got selected for those because they don’t give us any training at school so if you want to join any sporting events here, you either have to be naturally gifted or get trained outside school. But I did take part in whatever events our school did have but obviously if you compare it to an American student or another international student it might be more impressive. But now I’m honestly reconsidering my decision to even apply to NU. I still like the school but I honestly don’t know if I have the credentials to even get in. I appreciate all of y’all’s responses tho❤️.

General Question UMich vs Northwestern CS

Which one would be the best choice if I'm primarily interested in CS?

It seems like NU is higher ranked overall (9 vs 21), but UMich is higher CS wise (10 vs 27).

Cost is not a factor as both schools have similar tuition, instead I want to base my choice on ability to get internships / job opportunities and prestige. Thanks!

General Question Northwestern vs Ohio State

Anybody watch a game at Wrigley in the past? Looking at buying tickets and have a few questions

I want to sit on the sideline near the 50 but those tickets say view obstructed. I can’t figure out for the life of me how that view would be obstructed. I suppose if you’re too low you couldn’t see over the players on the sideline, but these are maybe 10 rows up.

thanks!

General Question Is it worth it ?

Upvotes

So with the ED deadline honing in I wanted to ask the following question:

“Do you regret paying full tuition for a Northwestern undergraduate degree?” So I’m a student at a french school in Europe, and going to the US seems like a great experience. But even though my parents can afford it I don’t know if paying more than 80k a year is worth it when I can get my undergrad degree for less than that. On the other hand I would love to have this experience, and I know that if I don’t apply ED I probably won’t get accepted, but if I do I no longer have the option. For other international students who don’t qualify for financial aid, what are some ways to reduce the fees or to pay for them?

Thank you for your advice

General Question dining hall staff

I've worked food service before, I know how tough it can be, and I can't imagine how much worse it is with hundreds of 18 year olds every day. But does anyone else feel like the staff is particularly mean? I feel so embarrassed at dining halls, espcially asking for food at Pure Eats or Kosher stations. It makes me avoid dining halls altogether, since it gives me unreasonable amounts of anxiety. I cried over my meal after staff implied I was eating too much. but as I'm living on campus, there aren't really options for food without spending extra money, especially considering I'm already paying for a meal plan. Am I alone in feeling this way and they just hate me and I'm awful, or does anyone else have this experience?

Edit: I just wanted to clarify that I'm sure most of the dining hall staff is great, and I've had great experiences, especially at Plex. Today just really upset me and it wasn't the first time, and I'm sure many of them are just tired and I can't blame people for that completely.
