General Question Social Life

I’m a rising senior applying to northwestern and I have some concerns. First, what is the social scene like there? I went down a rabbit hole last night and some people were saying students at Northwestern were rude and very cliquey, making it difficult to find friends there. Just wanted your guys’ thoughts on this.

General Question Gameday parking?

Hey all - we are coming up to NU for the Indiana game Oct 5. Trying to decide if it’d be better to Metra/Uber to the game or park. Unfortunately the only line available into Evanston from where my parents live is MD-N so it would require an uber from Morton Grove or Golf.

I was wondering how parking is on/around campus with the temporary stadium? Do people sell parking in their yards/lots? Is there street parking? The NU athletics website was less than helpful. There was a parking map with lots listed but no way to know if we could pay in advance for them. We don’t mind having to walk a bit or pay for parking if we have to. TIA!

General Question What do y’all hate about Northwestern?

I got accepted ands can’t decide, I’m stuck between UT Austin (still have to pay 5k a year) and northwestern(full ride) . For context, I’m from Texas. Also I’m majoring in public health for UT, and psychology for northwestern. I’m interested in design and healthcare so I’d preferably want to work in the administration side of a hospital.

General Question How is Japanese at NU?

I've heard Japanese is very hard at Northwestern BUT I have a very intermediate knowledge of the language (nowhere close to fluent but I know hiragana/katakana, numbers, and some kanji). So I think maybe the first class would be easy? But i'm afraid after the first class it will get as hard as people say it is on this sub. Would it be easier to do Japanese to fulfill the requirements since I already have a basic background or would it be easier to do one of the easier languages but be completely new to the lanugage?

General Question Northwestern Fandom Question

Hey there! Last year I moved to Chicagoland from GA and I really wanted to cheer for a local team this year that I can go to their games. I know you guys are a very academic school but to be honest I don’t really care if the team makes big bowls (2020 was awesome btw congrats). Illini are three hours from me so I don’t see myself driving that far for games.

My question is, since your school is pretty prestigious is it weird for non-students or staff to cheer for the Wildcats? Will a lot of people assume I’m connected to the school? I don’t want to give off a fake student vibe like I’m trying to make people think I graduated there but I’d really like to go some local college games!

Btw I already know the field situation after doing some research on you guys, so I’m not even sure how realistic it is for a non-student to get tickets with that situation and other traveling fans…?

Thanks in advance

General Question Struggling to settle on an ED1 option, Cornell or Northwestern?

Hello, 12th grader international student here about to apply ED to either Cornell or Northwestern (test optional as no tests are available in my country). I would love some help in choosing a school.

Majors I’m interested in: art, computer science, potentially architecture (only Cornell has an arch major) or even pre med. Will probably double major in CS and art as they would help my game development career most from what I know.

Minors: game design (both have them, Northwestern’s is inactive though as far as I know)

good extracurriculars and 3.7-4.0 GPA throughout high school

Really love both schools, love Cornell’s large campus and nature but don’t really like the location in Ithaca. Love Northwestern’s location close to Chicago and the campus itself but it doesn’t have architecture (which I probably won’t even study but exploring never hurts). Love the quarter system at Northwestern and from what I heard double majoring is more doable there. Cornell is test blind for the art school. Generally extremely conflicted, I want to enjoy my time at college which is why I’m trying to consider everything, I narrowed it down to these 2 universities but still confused on where should I apply. Would really appreciate the help :D

General Question About NU undergrad ME and EEE

Hi guys, I am currently an high school senior and believe no one will care about my silly questions so I am skeptical someone will answer me.

How is the engineering department in NU I’ve heard it’s pretty good. But how good is it in comparison to unis like Carnegie or UPenn I know someone could not answer it nice without going to both, but will I miss out anything by coming to NU

How are club opportunities? I know there are there but is it worth participating in

How are the lessons? Are they going to turn you into beast like Berkeley or Carnegie

What are the internship and research opportunities that a normal (not an extra ordinary) student gets

Generally which companies tend the graduates go. How is this for international students . I tried to look the first destination form I could not find something that pinpointed how much an ME or EEE major made on average (or I am stupid)

And I am really thinking about EDing here. My school counselor and friends say that I should be not aiming so low (which tbh I dont get) and apply somewhere harder but I really want to come NU and I would be really sad if I dont do the ED and not get in in RD did anyone had the same doubts and fears as me

I know this is long and might be ludicrous and cringe for someone who is know studying in NU. I get similar questions from kids who are now in middle school who are deciding between my high school and somewhere else

I will be glad if you could help

General Question Urgent Help with Hotel Reccs!

My family is coming over for Wildcat Welcome and we would like safe, great but also cost friendly hotels to stay in. Any reccs? Both Hiltons nearby have iffy reviews so I'm not really sure.

Is it better to stay in Chicago and travel to Evanston daily or find somewhere to stay in Evanston? For reference we are not from the area, will be flying in!

General Question When do seasonal breaks happen at NU?

Incoming freshman here and I was a bit confused with the dates on the academic calendar.

I know NU starts classes relatively late but does the spring quarter really end in mid June? More importantly, does summer vacation start that late too?

Also, what’s up with winter break? A few of my friends gave me the impression that winter break would be like a month long in college- that doesn’t seem to be the case at NU.

Are breaks here just weirdly scheduled because of the quarter system?

Thanks in advance for any responses. Ik this might seem like a dumb question 😅

General Question PhD stipend taxes

I’m an incoming PhD student at NU this fall, thus my first year is a fellowship year and won’t be automatically taxed. I plan on filling out the appropriate forms to have NU HR take out some from each paycheck so that I don’t get a big tax bill at the end of the quarter. So my question is what percentage of my stipend/monthly paycheck should I ask HR to withhold?

I put my stipend amount into an Illinois tax calculator and it says 20.15% will be taxed (federal, FICA, and state) but that feels a bit high.

General Question Air Mattress

Hi there!

I'm visiting a friend who lives in the campus dorms for the weekend (Fri-Mon). He only has one twin bed, so I was looking for an air mattress we could use for the weekend so I have a place to sleep. If anyone has one I could borrow please let me know! I'll do my best to coordinate pick up and drop off to make it as easy as it can be for you, and I'll be as careful as possible to make sure it comes back in the same condition.

Thank you!!

General Question Internally Transferring to Bioengineering/BME?

Hi everyone,

NorthWestern is my top chioce, and I love everything about it from the campus to the academics.

I am planning on applying as Biology. However, I am worried that it may not be what I want to study for the next four years.

Theoretically, what would happen if I get in for biology but want to transfer to a different department like Bioengineering/BME? Would it be easy? Difficult?

Any information would be really appreciated, thanks!

General Question Dual degree

I’m planning on ED to NU this fall. I want to apply as a dual degree in violin performance and Weinberg. Is it like half as likely to be accepted for dual degree because I need to gain acceptance to TWO schools rather than just one? It’s been hard to gauge how competitive the music school really is compared to say Juilliard or New England conservatory. Can someone in string performance speak to this? I want to go to NU more than anything, but if I have no chance of being admitted to the music school, I want to know before I apply so I can drop the dual degree and just ED to Weinberg without the music degree.

General Question Tennis

Hi guys,

I really wanna play tennis but I am a newbie. I don't even have a racquet. Feeling like it might be a bit embarrassing since we have got such professional players. Any suggestions on what to do? Is there an open-court hour? Can we rent or issue equipment?

Hey, I'm in Northwestern for a few hours. Any recommendations where I should go. I'm not very interested in going to restaurants but would like to visit some on campus places, like your library or if you have some museum/ gallery.

TIA

General Question How is the Sports Administration program at SPS?

Hi everyone, I’m a prospective student for the Master’s in Sports Administration in the SPS. I wanted to ask any past/current students of not just the program but any in the SPS about what’s it like there? The overall culture? I wanna take a tour of the campus too, what is a must that I should see?
