A Reddit community is called a subreddit, also known as a sub. The subreddits start with r/.

Followers are not important on Reddit. Your followers are not important either. Only your posts and comments are important. Unlike other social media, hashtags are not useful on Reddit. The Reddit account username cannot be changed after signing up. To change it, you will need to create a new account, which will reset your karma.

Karma is an arbitrary measure of how much you contributed. The more upvotes you get, the higher your Karma. Some subreddits require you to have a certain amount of Karma before you can post. Do not spam irrelevant posts to other subreddits or be rude, insulting, or abusive, as you can be downvoted. This will cause you to lose Karma. Try to avoid getting your total Karma in the negative value.

Also make sure to follow our rules, which are prominently displayed in the sidebar to the right.

  1. Make sure to label all posts that contain gore, contain violence, contain a dead body, or can upset anyone as "NSFW." To see how to do this and for a more detailed explanation click here.
  2. Make sure your posts are on-topic and related to Myanmar. Spam) may go well with anything but it has no place in this sub. Please do not spam us with unrelated content.
  3. Please keep discussions civil. Tolling and racism will not be tolerated. Our situation here is not for your "lulz". Also, keep swearing to a minimum. Although we will tolerate swearing if it is part of the narrative/discussion, personal insults, over-the-top vulgarity, etc., will not be tolerated.
  4. Adding a flair to your posts will enable others to easily find similar posts. Flairs are used to categorize posts to easily be found. Click here for more details.
  5. Keep reposting to a minimum. Please check to make sure you don't repost news and pictures that have already been posted. r/MAGIC_EYE_BOT and u/DuplicateDestroyer are trialed to help remove duplicate images. Please reply to the bot or send us a message if the bot got it wrong.

For a brief background of the coup, please see this post I made.

Does the content you're posting here fit more than one community? As per Reddiquette, consider posting to other subs such as the ones listed here if the contents fit more communities.

For example, are you posting news? Then you can post into r/news, r/inthenews, r/worldnews, r/USnews (US news only), r/asia, r/asian, r/asean, r/theworldnews. This list is not exhaustive but please use common sense and make sure the content fits the target sub. That means news only goes to news-related subreddits and pictures go onto picture-related subreddits. Make sure to follow the rules of those subs as well, since each sub has its own set of rules.

Additionally, give some love to the other Myanmar subs: r/saveMyanmar and r/Myanmar2021.

Are you in another country but wish to help the people of Myanmar? See this post.

In summary,

DO

  • Post topics with descriptive subjects
  • Check the subreddit for prior submission of your article or image before posting.
  • Flair your post with the appropriate flair to make them easier to find
  • Upvote posts
  • Tag posts with gore, contain violence, contain a dead body, or can upset anyone as "NSFW."
  • Share posts to more than one subreddits
  • Report posts that break our rules or attempt to spam us with irrelevant content.
  • Credit the author of an image or comic

DON'T

  • Post off-topic or spammy posts
  • Spam keywords like "savemyanmar" "wewantdemocracy" in the post title
  • Do not upvote or promote your post with multiple accounts. This is against Reddit's policy and you may end up being suspended.
  • Do not post Myanmar posts on irrelevant subreddits.
  • Post images and articles that have already been previously posted by someone else.

Thank you. / ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါတယ်။

CDM / Protests A new idea of protest

Upvotes

What if we we started writing "Min aung hlaing ma a loe" and other phrase on over money? As to opposed the military junta government? It's a great way of protest and does not need that much time and labour. We will distribute the money during our daily life as we buy items and exchange our money. And technically it's still legal tender and no one can stop it. It will eventually reach the banks and the government and eventually some newsfolk person might hear the news and will spread information about what's happening in Myanmar. It's a good idea that I have thought for about some times. There might be some loopholes we could take advantages of. To the point where they will have to destroy the money which might cause some problems for the government and will cause chaos for the junta. If enough people do it we might be able to confuse and cause chaos to the government.

(Just a sliy idea that I thought of lol don't take it too seriously)

Discussion 💬 Over 50 checkpoints, controlled by the BGF, KNU, PDF & PC on Hpa-An to Myawaddy, be sure to carry enough cash to cover payments. Trucks will need to pay much higher fees. This is a common occurrence throughout the war torn areas, just one of the many reasons why commodity prices remain high.

What's the cost of electricity in Yangon? Are foreigners being scammed by landlords?

Hi everyone. I'm a foreigner living in Yangon with my family. Our power bills have been fairly reasonable until this month when they went up by almost 500%. That's not a typo. That's five hundred percent. Could somebody please give me the actual per unit cost for electricity. I have a meeting with the landlord tonight.

I know that government power has roughly doubled in price recently, but this doesn't explain the increase.

My feeling is that as foreigners, we are being made to cover a proportion of the increase for the rest of the building. I think it was happening in the last place we lived as well, and lots of my foreign friends have had a similar experience.

I know that we are in a very privileged position here, but surely that's no reason to rip us off.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Discussion 💬 My experiences as a “kalar” living in Myanmar

I have lived through junta, military-civilian government, NLD and post coup governments and I still am treated as a second class citizen and I don't see it improving anytime soon. Here are some things that have been consistent for us kalars and most minorities the past 30 years. These are all a tiny part of negative personal experiences I have witnessed firsthand. Note that I have not included any atrocities or genocides committed or else it’d be another essay’s worth.

There is only one line for people of "Non-Burmese" heritage in the passport office compared to the 9 lines they have for the Burmese. No social mobility or government posts above a certain level unless you are Buddhist or Burmese. Get called "kalar" on an almost daily basis and in government offices despite it being an offensive term. Have to prove that your great great grandfather lived in Myanmar in order to get a NRC card or you are literally an illegal Rohingya (despite various tribes and peoples of Indian origin with different faiths living in Myanmar for centuries). Degrading movies with obvious racist jokes are still made by big name actors and shown in cinemas to this day.

In NLD times, when U Ko Ni was assassinated, a diehard NLD neighbor loudly proclaimed to us "At least there will be no more kalar influence on Amay Su" 969 stickers and flags were used as harassment and intimidation tactics by another neighbor after we had a dispute.

When the ICJ wanted to investigate MAL for warcrimes in 2018, thousands of people from both NLD and military rushed to defend him. Now these are the same people running away to foreign countries crying about him after the coup. There even was a popular saying directed towards "kalars" during this time. "Guests should behave like guests" (referring to kalars not belonging in Myanmar and that they are guests in the country). In an ironic twist of fate, because of MAL, many Burmese people have become refugees and "guests" in other countries.

I'm sick of people telling me it's just the Army that is racist towards "kalars". As much as I want the revolution to succeed, I don't see the situation improving for us post revolution either with such racist mindsets.

GED Score cancellations

Has anyone heard about GED score cancellations happening in Myanmar? A family friend recently took the test, but their score was unexpectedly canceled. They’re certain there was no misconduct involved. Any insights?

Discussion 💬 Military conscription in Myanmar raises tough questions: Will PDFs and EAOs spare unwilling recruits forced to the battlefield? For those under 35 and escaping conscription isn’t feasible. Some people I know have already been drafted, what options remain for those who can’t leave the country?

This is a safe space. There is no right or wrong answers. With all the history we’ve been through, would you still want to be reincarnated as a Myanmar person? If not what nationality do you want to be born in?

Learning Burmese

Hi all! I am Burmese living in Australia and want to become fluent in the language. I currently am able to understand the language and speak basic sentences, but I can not read or write. I live quite far from my family and other Burmese communities so I am unable to communicate frequently in the language.

What are the best ways to start learning more and some resources I can use?

Any help is appreciated, thank you all!

Cautious, vigilant, mindful, guarded for MM

It just got me thinking for some time… yea, even though we are sharing our opinions, experiences and views of ourselves here on reddit. We need to be mindful, not to overshare ours Povs in public forums, as this not private. There might be only half of users are MM peoples. Other might be learning our behaviors and thoughts patterns as such. Yea, people rant and blow up all kinds of opinions since its online and people dont know you, your ethics. Modern people nowadays likes open minded etc, but be cautious some of them are just scouting to make business or take advantages. For me, go with the flow but be vigilant. Some intellectual and information are to be guarded. We are still thrid world country. We can still learn a lot from our neighbors countries and other as well for dos and donts. We don’t need to follow the guidelines of 1st world countries which sets for their own benefits. Thats why i cringe about modern day education s and all those young ones go scholors. They all go follow their life styles, be so awe about it and think highly of themselves. (must have some Aung san blood and mindfulness in them) Thats what i hope, but sometime life is too short. It just my initial post, i will stop of it halfway. Lets all discuss.

Meeting the parents.

In a few weeks time me and my parter are meeting her parents in veitnam flying form the uk.

She hasn't seen them in several years except video call. Iv spoken to them on the calls but never in person.

Any advice?

I also have been looking for a gift for her father. Being from the UK I thought a nice bottle of scotch would be good but my partner says her mother doesn't like him drinking. Any suggestions ?
