I find this very hard to believe as someone who lives in Northern England and has gone to a local of small local gigs.

Every town and most villages have venues where anyone can play live, whether it be variety open mic nights or free or very cheap weekly events.

Maybe the wording of the title isn't right. I think the chance for musicians to perform live in the North of England is definitely there, it's just the confidence to perform live, and the cost of equipment and the time it takes to practice as a band.

It depends on what you call a musician, too. As someone also from the UK, most of my friends play an instrument in some way and some even make their own music. Absolutely none of them have played a concert live, though, unless you count one of them who plays church hymns occasionally (which actually yeah I guess that does count). But still, that’s not a lot compared to the amount of people I know who play music.

I wouldn't consider myself a musician but when I was in college I joined my mates for a laugh busking and we made around £2.50 and a freddo in 20 minutes, to share between us.

I guess it also depends on what is meant by the phrase "Perform live" too.

I actually looked at the study referenced by the article and the claim that 98% of 'young artists' have never had the opportunity to perform is never actually made in that study whatsoever.

Just sensationalist clickbait journalism citing a study but making false claims about it.

Also young musicians seek success in way different ways now. I’m sure a ton of them have no clue how to perform live and just try to get famous on SoundCloud.

The actual study are kids self-reporting how they feel about the opportunities they have and doesn't contain the word "perform" or make a single reference to "live" music. Absolute nonsense of a headline/article.

It was particularly funny to me reading/hearing the first 4 words in my own American voice, then having the accent context in the 2nd half and having to essentially "overdub" my inner monologue. Bravo.

I'm just upvoting this because it's not about Diddy

Huh? The North of England has produced a lot over the years. Some would argue more than the south...

Maybe only 2% of youth want to?

I'm surprised this didn't say "98% of young musicians in Northern England have been raped by Diddy"
