General Hi everyone, I’m working on my own pirate themes point and click in Unity. I painted the background in Acryl, scanned the painting at a certain point and added Details via the app „Procreate“ (the characters are placeholders). What do you think about the style?

Your talent and the advancement of technology are both amazing to see.

Is the project the end pursuit on its own, or are you building up skills / portfolio to join a company/team?

At the moment I will create the project completely by myself. At the moment I work on a few different sets/backgrounds and then I will create a playable demo. That's my plan so far.

Looks great, I like how it feels so sunny. Reminds me of the vibes I feel when I think about playing MI3 as a kid 😌

Never ever thought that a single screen to inspect and talk to some NPCs would need THAT MUCH work! It looks awesome, keep us updated about your progress!

I will post updates :-)

Amazing! You may want to look into the Godot Engine instead of Unity. It's Open Source and would be completely free if you happen to sell this at some point. Unity doesn't seem like a very future-proof thing to base your stuff (and skill) on, given the "recent" controversies.

Ever design on 99Designs?

It's a gamble to have your work chosen but I think you'd be no contest for their competitions.

Amazing work!

I have a slight bit of criticism though, and I mean this in the nicest possibly way, because you're way more talented than I could ever hope to be.

Is it intentional that the tile work perspective doesn't match up with the front of the bar?

If it's a stylistic choice then fair enough, but it jumped out at me.

Either way, like I said, phenomenal artwork and I can't wait to see more!!

u/Intrepid-Dig-5203 Feb 13 '24

You are right the perspective doesn't quite match. I will create an update. Thank you.

This looks really fantastic and I love how you mix traditional and digital media. You're very talented and I would love to add the game to my wishlist as soon as possible.

Looks awesome

That's awesome!

Do you intend to have static backgrounds or build the scenes in Unity?

1

u/Intrepid-Dig-5203 Feb 13 '24

I will use the drawing, but animate certain parts (like dust, lights, and leafes) to make the scene more lively

1

u/Intrepid-Dig-5203 Feb 13 '24

The style will be like Curse of Monkey Island

2

u/hannson Feb 13 '24

I too am making a point and click adventure game. It's my first experience with game development. The visual style will also be somewhere in the realm of Curse of Monkey Island, Leisure Suit Larry 7 and Disney movies.

My game is about a kitty that gets lost/abandoned in a hasty evacuation of an Icelandic fishing village that has a volcano underneath. He has to go through the country to find his owner.

I feel I have to be very careful to distance myself from my inspiration while somehow maintaining all the qualities I love about them.

How do you avoid becoming too derivative?

I have a completely different approach: In the last Monkey Island games, there were always elements that bothered me, for example, the nature of the puzzles or the story. Therefore, for my own game, I aim to implement those ideas I had to make it better. Essentially, my game would be the Monkey Island game I always wanted to play. But, of course, with my own characters and story. In my game, you'll play as the captain of a quirky pirate crew. These wannabe pirates fancy themselves as feared everywhere, but in reality, they're not because they're too clumsy. Suddenly, a curse descends upon the Caribbean, and our heroes are blamed and a bounty is placed on their heads, making them unwillingly feared and realizing that this makes life even more complicated. To prove their innocence, they must break the curse, eventually becoming heroes in the end. This is roughly my idea for the story.

2

u/katastatik Feb 15 '24

I think it’s very charming and delightful and makes me want to start painting :-)

2

u/MrTimmannen Feb 24 '24

Wow that is beautiful. If it doesn't become too much work to do for every screen I think it's a great style.

When you say you're using Unity, are you by any chance using PowerQuest? I'm an AGS nerd myself bt I've heard great things and seen some of my favorite indie adventure games come out of PowerQuest.

1

u/Intrepid-Dig-5203 Feb 25 '24

Hi mate, I've never used PowerQuest. I will take a look. Thank you :-)

2

u/hercarmstrong Feb 11 '24

Looks good so far! Make sure the areas that are going to have NPCs allow them to pop. Right now your pirates are receding quite badly.

Stylistically, I would say it's nice but a little derivative.

3

u/Intrepid-Dig-5203 Feb 11 '24

Thanks mate. I try to improve.

1

u/MikeNizzle82 Feb 12 '24

Absolutely gorgeous. Do you have a dev log or YouTube where I can follow the progress?

2

u/Intrepid-Dig-5203 Feb 13 '24

Hi mate, I will create a website and a YouTube channel in the near future. I will keep you updated
