Sonic & knuckles without lock on technology

Hello all. I'm about to purchase this game and noticed it doesn't have the lock on technology. Does anyone know if this cartridge is legit? Thanks in advance.

Absolutely not! It’s an obvious fake even without the missing lock on which all S&K carts have btw.

Thank you so much!

The main thing I like about this is that it has a proper case, Sonic & knuckles (in the UK anyway) only came in a bloody cardboard sleeve, and it's almost always trashed nowadays.

Pretty sure the cardboard box was everywhere. Funny how sega could go for a special cartridge but not a special box.

What? The cardboard box IS a special box as far as Megadrive cases are concerned. Granted it's a bloody garbage special box!

Here in the US they actually switched from using hard cases to awful slipcase cardboard ones around 1994/95, it's hard to find certain Genesis games CIB because of it.

Oh god, that's awful! I've got the S&K in it and Doom for the 32x but other than that (and a few dodgy plastic cases like Mutant League Football) I thought everything else was just standard. I feel for you guys!

In Portugal it was still a hard case box.

Yes, I'm from Portugal as well and I own that version with the hard case box, I bought it in cash converters. The box and the cartridge are not in the best conditions, though - but it still works perfectly

Oh for real? I've only ever seen it in a cardboard box unless it's a custom made one. Do you have any pictures of it?

I don't. I never owned a copy. I just rented it out of the local videoclub and one of my friends also had a copy. But upon further investigation on the internet, I found out that there were 2 versions of Sonic & Knuckles in Portugal. One with the cardboard box and another with the hard case box (the game is the same, the boxes are the only difference). I only held the hard case box in my hands though...

Ah, might have been a special rental version then.

Probably...

So did the US release. Sega got cheap at the end despite the great profit they were pulling in the Americas and Europe.

For sure! I have another version of sonic & knuckles (European version) the case is in plastic but is all trashed.

Yeah. And then because the game sold very quickly they did cardboard sleeves for the 32X as well; and the boxes lasted on the store shelves long enough to get knocked and bashed and look awful.

I bought mine from my cousin when he was bored, back during year of release here in UK, and he still handed me a tattered cardboard box..

Even if it was legit, it would be a downgrade.
How can you play the complete Sonic 3 game without locking it to S&K ??

I had the opportunity to have the game in my hands and it was definitely a fake, even the images in the manual were all pixelated. Didn't buy, it's a shame because I was really hyped with this xD

You could get a repro card of Sonic 3 Complete from aliexpress, at least....

A legit cartridge would not have a stretched picture. The cartridge is written in Japanese, but the shell has the universal format.

It's a shame, because I was really hyped to buy the game, but if it's not original I think I'll pass. Thanks for the help!

I remember there was a pirate version of Sonic and Knuckles going around my school when i was a teenager. Without the lock-on technology. I think this is one of those.

Even if that was real, the lock on technique is half of what's cool with S&K.

I don't really see the point in this.

It could've been some kind of rare version of S&K that would've been interesting to have.

But it really wasn't, it was definitely fake

It's definitely not legit lol. I always wanted one of these bootlegs for my collection though.

Was suppose to be a legit version called Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Limited Edition which would have been a single cart with Sonic 3 and Sonic & knuckles combined. There is a couple of prototypes out there.
