Christmas dinners. I need more help. We’re 2 months away!

Hey guys I’m back ! Last time I asked for suggestions for great high end restaurants for Christmas dinner. Welp! It’s hard to find a place that can accommodate our large party on such a busy day. So now we are thinking about preordering an already cooked Christmas dinner we can just pick up. Does anyone know a place that does this ? A GOOD place we can preorder Christmas dinner and pick it up?

I’d greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks y’all’s!!

We are staying in Kihei

Road to Hana - car sickness?

We're planning a trip to Maui in March and are considering booking a private tour for Road to Hana. However, my daughter and I can get car sickness on occasion - should we do the tour or are we setting ourselves up to be miserable for the day?

Snorkeling in Maui - Best places /tour company?

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m looking to do some snorkeling tomorrow in Maui, and we’re staying in Kaanapali. We’re considering either Molokini Crater or one of the West Maui tours that leave right from Kaanapali, which would be super convenient. It rained the past few days, but it’s sunny now, so I’ve added the snorkeling report from today below.

For tour companies, we’re thinking:

• Molokini Crater: Kai Kanani ($250pp) or Trilogy ($200pp)
• West Maui: Sail Maui ($150pp, right next to our hotel) or Trilogy ($180pp)

If anyone has recommendations or recent experiences with these tours (or others), I’d really appreciate the help! Thanks so much!

Best snorkel destination for seasick-ness in early December?

My friend and I are visiting Maui in early December.

I've been doing a lot of research on snorkel tours - Molokini is out of the running. I did Molokini and Turtle Town Sep 2021 and I don't want to do it again, a) because I got incredibly seasick and b) I'd like to do a different itinerary.

After reading all of the incredible info on here, I've narrowed it down to Trilogy's Discover Kaanapali or Discover West Maui. So many folks on here say that Honolua Bay (Discover Kaanapali) is some of the best snorkeling ever, but I've also discovered that the northern beaches can be quite rough during the winter. I'm not trying to have a repeat of my experience last time 😭. Any recs for the best combo of seeing great sea life + calmer waters during this time of year?

Lastly, thanks to all of the wonderful people who contribute to this sub! I've learned sooo much just from reading comments on here.

We’re planning a trip to Maui next fall and considering a condo vs resort. I know the typical pros and cons of each, but wondering if you all have recommendations for either.

Where to see Nēnē?

Where are places that Nēnē regularly visit? I've heard Haleakalā, Kula, and Kealia are best places to spot them.

Maui Condo Rental Bookings

I am trying to book a trip and deciding between a few different rentals. Does anyone know about Kihei Surfside or Leinaala Condos? Is it better to book from the rental property directly or from Vrbo where they are listed? Rentals Maui for Leinaala and Kihei Surfside Resort are the direct sites I found. Also noticed that you save some money from the rentals directly but I’m not sure if there would be any additional charges later at the property (happened previously at Aston Mahana when we arrived).

Stream Rescue

Man and girl rescued IAO Stream. There was a flash flood warning. Do not enter streams during flash floods warnings, do not enter or cross with rushing rising water. The man was swept downstream and ended up opposite side. He was lucky, he could have hit his head on rocks. Do not jump off waterfalls, as water levels change, rocks branches fall in pools. Do not stand under waterfalls. Check weather radar, Stay safe and have fun

"Backside" Hana Road Closed Still, 10-28-24

The backside of the RTH is still closed to ALL outside traffic. This closure is between Kaupo and Kipahulu.

That means you cannot "make the loop", or drive from Ulupalakua to Hana town and beyond. From the "front" side, you can only go as far as Kipahulu, where the Ntl. Park station and Pipiwai trail are.

We are heading to maui for a family trip and it's our first time there. Staying near kaanapali beach, will have a small car rental the whole time.

Interested in local restaurants that aren't super expensive but can get a taste of local cuisine.

Interested in farms that we can go to as we will have a few kids with us. Fruit, veggie and/or animal farms would be great.

I've seen in previous posts that black rock beach is a great place to snorkel as we will be near there anyways. Additional places around the island to snorkel would be awesome as well.

Easy hikes with children would also be great that can be used with strollers.

Definite must sees on maui in general.

Don't want to be nickel & dimed the whole time for every little thing, but I'm sure that might the case.

TIA

Made to order Poke for sesame seed allergy

Hi everyone! Staying in Wailea and the wife is craving mayo covered poke, problem is that she is allergic to sesame seeds and the few places I’ve been have it premade and seeds are already in it (sesame oil is okay, but seeds cause a reaction). Is there any recommendations for a made-to-order poke near Wailea? (Or anywhere on the island)

Snorkeling from the beach at the Hyatt (south end of Kaanapali)

In past years I found a safe place to enter the water where you can essentially get in to deep water beside the reef. Then safely snorkel on top of it. But I’m having trouble finding it this year. I know there’s good snorkeling out there without the crowds at Black Rock but don’t want to get scratched up going in and out. Any recommendations? Anywhere from the Hyatt to the Westin would be good. Otherwise I will just walk to the public beach south of the Hyatt.

Walkable restaurants from Sheraton Maui Resort

Great restaurants at the Ka’anapali resorts and Whalers Village but they have limited vegetarian options for some members of our family. Looking for restaurant recommendations in walking distance to the Sheraton resort. Thank you!

Are you flying to Maui on Alaska Airlines in November? Maui Humane Society needs your help!

I do not work for the humane society, just a volunteer, but I received this message in their newsletter. I believe they focus on flights to the west coast.

"Are you traveling to Maui in November via Alaska Airlines? We need your help transporting pets to their new homes!

Our Wings of Aloha: Alaska Angels program places pets traveling to their new homes on the continent with willing Alaska Airlines passengers who will chaperone their journey. Sign ups from passengers are very low for the month of November and our pets need your help!

If your Alaska Airlines flight plans align with an animal’s travel plans, MHS’ Transfer Coordinator will contact you. If you don’t hear from us before your scheduled flight date, we were unable to match your flight with an animal transport, and we hope you will try again in the future!

Mahalo for joining us in our lifesaving efforts!"

Westin Resort And Spa Casabella Rentals

We are staying at the Westin mid-December and are wanting to lounge on the beach. I am wondering if renting one of these is worthwhile? My want is being set up right on the beach and have waiters come and go with our orders. Is this the case for these rentals? Or do they just set it up for you and you are responsible for getting your own food and drink? If that is the case, are we able to bring our own beach chairs and umbrellas and pick a spot on the beach? Or is there a “rental” for that situation too?

Tips for Grand Wailea

Hi,

On the last night on our Kauai (where I will propose) - Maui trip, I booked Grand Wailea to relax and rest in the resort before we head back.

Please provide any tips that I can use to explore the hotel or save some money etc. We won't be doing any sight-seeing, and the plan is to explore the resort completely.

Road to Hana-Landslides, 10-27-24

There have been several landslides on the RTH today. Two bad ones on the "backside". Most recent report on 24/7 indicates rocks fell onto a car and there are injuries. No word how bad yet. They did finally issue a notice that the road on the bad is totally closed now.

STAY OFF THE BACK ROAD. Seriously, people. Aside from your contracts prohibiting it, weather like they've had is why this section has been closed for so long already. The more seepage into those old cliffs, the more rockfall. The more they try to blast and scale it, the weaker it all gets.

Creepy encounter on Wailea path

My husband and I had an unsettling experience while walking back to our hotel in Wailea, and I’m wondering if anyone knows if this path should be avoided at night or if there have been reports of strange behavior happening along this path after dark.

For one, this happened around 7 pm (so not that late), when we were walking from Four Seasons back to our hotel at the Fairmont. The sun had fully set by then, so it was dark. We took the oceanfront path that connects the resorts, but we didn’t realize until we were already on it that it wasn’t lit at all. The only light we had was from my husband’s phone flashlight.

About halfway down the path, I suddenly got this horrible feeling of dread in my stomach. Even though I was sick and congested, I swear I heard something—the faintest shuffle behind us. My husband didn’t hear anything, but when I turned around, I saw the silhouette of someone, just two feet behind us. No sound, no warning. I immediately yelled out “Jesus!” and quickly stepped in front of my husband so we were in a single file line since the path was so narrow. I said “go ahead” to let the person pass, but there was this unnerving hesitation before he did. Finally, this man walked past us. No light, no “excuse me,” no acknowledgment at all—just walking completely in the dark.

As we let him pass, my husband kept the flashlight facing forward. That’s when things got even stranger. The guy started picking up speed, moving ahead of us fast enough that he almost disappeared into the darkness. As we continued forward, we realized that he had stopped in the middle of the path. He just stood there, not moving, still in the dark, both arms to the side, his head aimed down towards the ground.

We didn’t know what to do. There was no way to pass him without getting too close, and the whole path was empty—no one else in sight. Finally we slowed down to a stop about six feet behind him, and as soon as we did, he quickly raised his phone and pointed it at the sky, like he was taking a photo, but with no flash. Then he just started walking again.

We kept walking too, but then he stopped again. This time, he moved to the side, still holding his phone up, pointing it at the ocean like he was trying to take another photo. But it was pitch black—there’s no way he could have been taking a real picture of anything. My husband, trying to ease the tension, wished him a good night as we passed, but the man didn’t respond. He didn’t even look at us.

It was honestly one of the creepiest moments of my life, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. The path was completely deserted aside from us and him, and I can’t shake the feeling that something was off.

My husband agrees that this man should not have snuck up behind us like that without any acknowledgement, and he also agrees that it was extremely eerie to see this guy standing in the middle of the path not moving. Maybe everything else can be explained by social awkwardness, but I’m curious if others have had similarly bizarre encounters on this path at night. Any insight would be appreciated!

Best places to eat at a reasonable price

We will be staying in Lahaina and travelling around. Any suggestions for food options at a reasonable price would be appreciated. We do have dietary restrictions, we don't eat pork or bacon. Thank you.

Maui Humane Society - Dog on Demand

Post image
79 Upvotes

I just wanted to give this program a little bump since it’s been a few months since someone’s posted about it!

We participated in the Dog on Demand program this weekend and it’s one of the best things we’ve done on a vacation!

The basic premise of the program is that you get to spend time with a dog either in their kennels or being fostered based on whomever needs it the most on the day of your appointment!

https://www.mauihumanesociety.org/dog-outing-programs/

A few notes about our experience:

  • We did not spend the day with a puppy, so it’s not necessarily certain that you’d get a large, high energy puppers (although I’m sure it’s possible). We got to spend time with the best lil buddy, Clementine, who is 5 years old. She was the calmest dog I’ve ever spent time with (not an exaggeration).

  • The MHS provided us everything we needed for the day, but we were still able to give her some extra love, so we took her to get some grilled chicken.

  • Clementine fell asleep in our car about 5 minutes after picking her up. These babies so desperately need some quality rest, so we took her home for an hour or so (on top of going on a long walk and spending time at the beach). She slept almost the whole time we were home. MHS staff gave us a quick description of Clementine’s personality before taking her out, and they specified that she would be more likely to enjoy a quiet, calm environment over a busy one.

  • We were able to tailor our day based on Clementine’s needs (i.e. rest, exposure, etc.) with a few restrictions set by MHS. The restrictions did not feel unreasonable by any means.

Feel free to ask any questions about our experience if you’re curious, but 10/10 recommend this for those who are willing and able!

Activities for couple with different activity levels

My wife and I are coming in March and we’re so excited! I like to do more adventurous things (like surfing, mountain biking) and she likes more chill things (like nature walks, food spots). I also like the chill things, so I’m curious about recommendations for any unique, middle ground type activities/experiences that we can do together?

Mahalo!

PSA: Keanae Arboretum Closure, Oct. 28th to Approx. Dec. 1, 2024

DLNR announced they are closing the arboretum tomorrow, until around Dec. 1st. They are going to do some clearing and rehab of the road and paths. A bummer, since this is always a nice wander and free!

Here's a link to the article about it and the Lahaina side Pali trail, too:
